View Full Version : SI.com: Sharpe Not the Greatest TE

epicSocialism4tw
08-17-2006, 01:44 PM
As one would expect from the overly sentimental and traditionally anti-Bronco rag that is Sports Illustrated, SI chose to downplay the long list of accomplishments and statistical dominance that Sharpe has over his competition to wax sentimental about the first receiving threat as a TE.

The guys at SI get more and more senile as time goes by. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0608/gallery.NFLtopTE/content.10.html

I think that the argument against Sharpe is very difficult from all angles because he has it all. He owns the stats, has the championships (3), was an integral piece of a dominant team. And he was easily the best TE of his generation. He was a complete player. Blocking was not a weakness.

Blocking is a relative term--and why Sharpe got tagged as a 'weak blocker' is really an injustice. Look at the running back statistics while the guy was TE and no credible case can be made that he was a weak blocker. Gonzo is quite a talent but he'll never contribute to a Super Bowl on one team, let alone two. Sharpe has the rings to go along with the stats while Gonzo does not.

To elaborate further for our young grasshoppers:

LP - Long Play Record. 33 1/3 RPMs. 12" - Up to 30 minutes per side.

EP- Extended Play Record. 45 RPMs. Usually a 7 inch single with 2 songs per side.

Gonzalez may surpass Shay's recieving records, but he will finish with minimal post season accomplishments, zero championships, and will never have been a part of blocking for a 2,000 yard rusher.

He can dunk over goal posts though!!!

Blocked punt helps Broncos top Chiefs in OT

NFL.com wire reports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 20, 2002) -- Shannon Sharpe proved there's still plenty of life in his 34-year-old legs. There was never a doubt about his attitude.

Sharpe set an NFL record for tight ends with 214 yards receiving, and his two second-half touchdown catches helped the Denver Broncos rally from a 14-point deficit to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 37-34 in overtime.

Sharpe, who made 12 catches, set a single-game franchise record for receiving yards and broke Jackie Smith's league mark for tight ends.

Smith had 212 yards receiving on nine catches for the St. Louis Cardinals against Pittsburgh on Oct. 13, 1963.

Sharpe caught a pair of scoring passes from Brian Griese, who was 30 of 50 for a career-best 376 yards, as Denver (5-2) defeated the Chiefs (3-4) at Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since 1998.

After Sharpe beat three defenders for his first TD, an 82-yarder, he couldn't resist needling Kansas City's fans. He bent down in the end zone, unfastened some tape from his shoe and showed them what was written underneath.

"It says, 'Big Play Shay,' " Sharpe said. "I just wanted to let everyone know I was still back."

A bit much?

He tried to rip Shannon Sharpe's head OFF of his body. Fk'em and fk the chiefs str8 up.

Gonzo is a beast. In our offense, Gonzo would have been close to Sharpe, but remember when Shannon caught that pass vs the Seahawks when John ducked the blitzing LB, Sharpes speed was to much for even Safeties. Remember Kenoy Kennedy haplessly chasing him in the playoffs vs us with that fumble recovery. Shannon Sharpe was the best instant mismatch in tackle football.

Sharpe seemed delighted about the Chiefs utter meltdown on National Television, embarrassing themselves, the franchise, and thier troglodite fans.

"I got a guy suspended, I got a guy cut, a coach resigned, and another thought about resigning," he said. "I'm pretty good. I ought to go in politics."

The coach who thought about resigning was Miami's Jimmy Johnson, who flirted briefly with retirement after his Dolphins were blown out by the Broncos, 38-3, in a divisional playoff game.

It was after that game that Sharpe called Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino "a loser," sent word for Johnson to evacuate his office at Pro Player Stadium "because we're going to need it to break down film," and chided the Dolphins with this rhetorical question: "How does it feel to have the Super Bowl at your house, and you're not invited?"

Gonzo is downhill from here. They are going to have to keep him in to block a lot this season and he'll ger frustrated and start whining again. After Trent gets sacked all season long, he'll retire and by the time Carl Peterson finds someone who can throw the ball to him, Tony G. Will be retired.

dunno about that. would TD have gone over 2000 without sharpe blocking? downfield especially?

I don't know. Shannon was just an okay blocker but not great. I would give credit to Eddie Mac and Rod Smith's downfield blocking before Shannon. Again, he wasn't a horrible blocker, but he wasn't that great either.
But on third down, there's no other TE I'd rather throw the ball to. The guy was clutch.

Pfft. Newsome homer...LOL

LOL

i just call 'em like i see 'em.

the "plummer homer" stuff cracks me up since im only supporting the guy
based on what he's done.
its not like i was a fan of his before he came here, but whatever.
"homer" is the new favorite word for some people around here.

Sharpe was not only an adequate blocker but he turned into being a good blocker. He got great position on his blocks and did what he had to to get the RB by him. Anyone who says Sharpe was a poor blocker never watched him play.

Here are the rankings:

1. John Mackey
2. Shannon Sharpe
3. Dave Casper
4. Ozzie Newsome
5. Ditka
6. Kellen Winslow
7. Tony Gonzalez
8. Mark Bavaro
9. Todd Christiansen
10. Ben Coates

Notable omissions:
Brent Jones
Jay Novacek
Charlie Sanders
Crazylegs Hirsch
Dwight Clark

Any one of 'em could play on my team. Sharpe was a winner, though. He made the big play when everything was on the line. Those don't show up in the stats.

Um, how many people here actually saw Mackey play? I didn't, so I asked my pops.

He said - its a different game, but Mackey was better in his era than Sharpe was in his.

sounds like your dad is one of those guys that had to walk up hill in the snow three miles to school with no shoes... everyday until he was 18.

Sharpe revolutionized the TE position. No one was better.

I saw them both play and in those rankings the guy that is really under rated is Charlie Sanders. He was better than 3-4 of the guys on the top ten list.

You are right, Sharpe revolutionized (maybe a little overstated), but Mackey defined it in the first place. Both were great.

Didn't every dad?

That doesn't mean he doesn't know what he is talking about. In addition to being a smart guy, he used to coach.

Sharpe was great, the best I have seen. But unless you saw them both, you can't really make a proper statement about the "greatest". The games and stats are just different.

* - Super BowlIt's too bad Shannon never had a huge Super Bowl performance in his three games in the spotlight. He did get hurt early against Atlanta, so that took away one chance.

I'll never forget his performance in that Wild Card loss to the Raiders. What a great game he had, which didn't mean anything due to the inept defensive effort from Charlie Waters' boys. Jeff Hostetler and Napoleon McCallum had Waters holding his head in his hands in shame on the bench.

See? It looks like a big black CD with a little hole in the middle. We used to call them LPs.

We called it black licorice pizza. Small child of the 70s. Thanks mom for those haircuts cover them ears.
