I am trying to get an idea if this team is better than last year, which would mean a Super Bowl team since they were one step away. I would love to hear the opinions. This is what I have....
QB- Plummer took a quantum leap last year in a controlled offense, but can weexpect the same without Kubiak and a suspect running game? Cutler is definitely an upgrade at the backup spot.
RB- At this point, I have to think we are worse off than last year. I am not high on the Bell's and Dayne is hurting. I know our running game is a product of a terrific line so Iam not panicked but I am concerned.
WR- Javon is a big upgrade over Lelie, even if he has to play on one leg.
OL- Our bread and butter. I am feeling great about this unit. Its hard not to.
DL- Injuries to warren and Brown have further crimped analready thin group. The strength has been in the rotation and depth and the ability to keep people frsh.
LB- Still fast and athletic. I see no reason for a dropoff.
DB- The 2005 draft will pay off big this year as the kids are no longer rookies. I expect big things from this unit and Nick Ferguson is still underrated.
ST- missing Sauerbrun for a month hurts. Other than that, I defer to those who are closer to whats going on than I am.

QB- I'm going to get called a Homer for this, but I think Plummer is currently the best QB in the AFC West. Trent Green is good but he's always been the type of quarterback that you can win with, but he won't win it for you and he's had a heck of a supporting cast on offense. Plummer has shown in the past that he can carry a team (ie; Cardinals 98 playoff team). I think having Cutler around will provide him with a little more fire.
RB- I think when the preseason is over, Tatum is going to be our starter. He really gets an undeserved bad rap around here and I think we'll be pleased if we stick him in there and start feeding him the ball.
Everything else you posted, I agree with.

No argument there, but he just isn't starting caliber anymore IMO.

Yeah, maybe a little. However, the Offense has needed some new blood to increase the effectiveness in the passing game for awhile.
I got to watch most of the installation of the passing tree while I was at camp and they have changed alot since last year. Especially, they are running more diverse pattern combinations from different formations and Sets. The spacing has been altered and they have emphasized different patterns on third downs. Some of this was evident in the detroit game, but for the most part they ran last years passing routes and not so much of what they did this camp.

I propose you answer the question like an accountant:
SUBTRACTIONS . . . . . . ADDITIONS
Trevor Pryce . . . . . . . . Kenard Lang
Monsanto Pope . . . . . . .Elvis Dumervil
Jeb Putzier . . . . . . . . . .Tony Scheffler
BVP (as #2 at least).. . . Jay Cutler
Mike Anderson . . . . . . . Mike Bell (and/or)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ron Dayne (barely played)
Ashley Lelie . . . . . . . . . Javon Walker
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .David Kircus
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Brandon Marshall
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Darius Watts (didn't play last year)
Gary Kubiak . . . . . . . . . Mike Heimerdinger
David Gibbs . . . . . . . . (any warm body will do ...)
I think we look better - on paper at least - than last year.
Still that ugly demon of pass rush from the front four, though ... THAT'S our problem.

STOP! Hammertime.
Every time I see them, the Broncs are just so hype! They'r tough on the turf and follow Mighty Mike. Now why would I ever stop observing them? When other football franchises just ain't hip?
I've toured around the country from Colorado to Coose Bay, an everywhere I go it's BRONCOS! GO BRONCOS! And the rest just get in my way.
Sorry, I'm from the 1980's and remember some of the early 90's, couldn't help myself.

Normally I'd agree with you here but getting Dinger I think is actually an up grade.

I think we are better. The additions seem to be better than the subtractions. So the question maybe is this year's schedule easier or harder than last year. I think we have got a pretty tough scehdule this year.

Amen, brother.
I'd say we're a little better, overall... mostly because I think Walker will add so much firepower to this offense and Sheffler looks like he could step right in and play.
Defensively, we'll be about the same. Decent, but we won't be able to stop anyone from throwing on us when it counts.

weve also added adam meadows as a solid(according to reports) backup plus we have healthy guys again!(hopefully warren and brown will be healthy by the beginning of the season) and that is one thing not to discount, we start off with fresh guys and hopefully the injury bug stays away this year

The schedule always looks tough before a season ... I think it´s a wash ... last season we had the NFC East and AFC East and the second placed teams from the other AFC divisions, this season we have the AFC North, NFC West and the Division Champs. I´d rather play the AFC North and NFC West than the AFC East and the NFC East.

Injuries. Turnovers.
Thats about 95% of the battle right there. We had something like 16 turnovers last year thats a big part of our sucess.

Yeah, turnovers and injuries. Something else often overlooked is that last year's D, despite its lack of pass rush, was ranked #3 in points allowed. That, combined with the turnovers, was a HUGE part of why we went 13-3 last year. They shut teams down and allowed our offense to control the clock. The D will probably be good again this year, but not THAT good.
So...The offense is definitely better on paper, the D is about the same, and if last year is any indication our schedule is probably rougher. I see a solid 11-5 year, a division win and a loss once more in either the divisional round or AFCC game, and the subsequent release of Plummer and rise of Cutler, with real pressure on him to win a SB in 2007, his first year as a starter. Which of course will depend on how much we emphasize D during next year's offseason.
Honestly, I see us as the AFC's Philadelphia Eagles. Perennial conference game losers. I think we take the SB in 2008.

Upgrades-
1-Javon Walker over Lelie. Huge upgrade here. Walker adds two or three dimensions to the offense over Lelie.
2-Darrent Williams and Foxworth over themselves as rookies.
3-DJ Williams in his second year at a new position.
4-Watts over Charlie Adams (or Marshall over Adams or Kircus over Adams or Devoe over Adams or Clark over Adams) Do we actually have depth at WR?
5-Tatum Bell over Tatum of a year ago. Stronger and more determined.
6-Healthy Champ over the banged up Champ of a year ago.
7-A freed up Gerard Warren.
8-Scheffler over Putz.
9-Cecil Sapp over KJ. If he can get healthy.
10-Addition of Heimerdinger
Downgrades:
1- I'm forced to acknowledge Pryce here even though I feel his loss is addition by subtraction. I think he set the tone for the whole DL, and I didn't like the tone on the DL. He was too often deferred to and too often lacking in effort. Nonetheless, on paper it's a downgrade.
2- Rod Smith, Tom Nalen and John Lynch. Another forced acknowledgement, but if you're going to count the growth of DJ, Fox, and DWill you have to count the decline of those on the other side of the curve. However, I expect this to be almost imperceptible.
Washes:
1-Loss of Mike Anderson. He was servicable, but I don't expect a decline in the running game without him there. With how MBell has looked I expect this to move into the Upgrade column, but won't count it as such until we see MBell in real action.
2- Loss of Kubiak. Some will count this against us, but I'm of the opinion that the offense has declined in proportion to the increased control given to Kubiak. I think Shanahan and Dinger are more than capable of picking up any slack caused by the departure of Kubes. I think he's a huge upgrade in Texas, and wish him the best.
Overall I think the upgrades far outweigh the downgrades, and the future looks absurdly bright with Cutler, Marshall, Kuper, Scheffler, Walker, and a horde of young talent that is showing they can get it done at this level. I think it's going to be fun a lot of fun to be a Broncos fan for the next decade.

I'd say we're just a bit better but we're much younger and faster. Now we need the young guys to step up and play. Our talent ceiling is much higher than it was.
If we can't get any kind of pass rush, which has looked much better I'd like to say, than we aren't going to do much in the postseason.

The schedule last year looked brutal too. If you are finishing 1st or 2nd every year in the AFC West, you're going to have a tough schedule by virtue of just being in the AFC West.
Last year, we had the Pats and Eagles, both coming off a SB appearance and they stunk it up. And instead of the NFC East, we get the NFC West this year. I think everything will even out in the end.

Last year, no one believed in the Browns imports and after the debacle in Miami and the first half of that SD game...there were a lot ready to abandon ship on the 2005 campaign. They lost an aging Anderson who ran out of gas, Putz, who couldn't block and Pryce who characteristically didn't perform like he should've. Walker is much better than Lelie and Cutler is light years better than Linus ever hoped to be and Kubes had become somewhat predictable....In sum, the team has lost very little.
Better, without question.

QB- Plummer took a quantum leap last year in a controlled offense, but can weexpect the same without Kubiak and a suspect running game? Cutler is definitely an upgrade at the backup spot.
This will be the main area that will vault us or sink us. I think Shanny is going to open it up and Jake will need to take all he has learned and apply it. No more protecting him from himself...can he handle it?
RB- At this point, I have to think we are worse off than last year. I am not high on the Bell's and Dayne is hurting. I know our running game is a product of a terrific line so Iam not panicked but I am concerned.
TB should be better than last year and MA was just a grinder. MB has shown he will get the tough yards, I think we are better here.
WR- Javon is a big upgrade over Lelie, even if he has to play on one leg.
Not just Walker, but Watts, Marshall, Kircus, Terrell are all an improvement over Adams as a #3.
OL- Our bread and butter. I am feeling great about this unit. Its hard not to.
Better depth for sure
DL- Injuries to warren and Brown have further crimped analready thin group. The strength has been in the rotation and depth and the ability to keep people frsh.
Better Depth with Elvis and Lang, Pryce was good we will have to see if the change in what we do helps this group.
LB- Still fast and athletic. I see no reason for a dropoff.

Dont forget Paymah who is playing very well.

ok now im retarted for stating my opinion, shut up hotrod
For one, the schedule. Also, the fact that our bye week is extremely early in the year.
Kansas City and San Diego, regardless of bias -- will be tough games. On the road to Kansas City is almost a lock for a loss, but it's almost a lock for a win (given history) when they've come here. I think San Diego can really challenge us on their home turf this year. So what do I expect there? At best 3-1, however right now I'm leaning towards 2-2.
The Patriots, with the loss of some key players are still a tough team. I haven't decided on this game yet, but it's definitely one we could. Baltimore always plays us well, regardless of how you bad you think they are, it's always a tough game when we play the Ravens. Indianapolis and Pittsburgh back to back? Better hope we split, those are two critcal games Denver could use in the "W" column. Seattle Seahawks. . . Cincinatti Bengals. Very solid teams. Playoff material, and possible Super Bowl contenders. Can't remember, but that's 8 games I'm not even sold on. Hell, there are some others that could go either way too.
So, that's one reason.
Secondly, we have a lot of new players who are coming to the team. Some rookies who could have big roles. Whether or not that's a good thing is in question. Also, I'm not very happy with the situation on the defensive line and I have some skepticism on the running game as well. Some others I could go into depth more on, but I'm heading out to dinner with buds. Peace.

Sorry fellas but i feel that we are not going to be as good as last year based soley because of the schedule. its a tough one. i wouldnt feel this way if we can sing the same old song in Do we have a pass rush. in truth only time will tell but based soley on these facts i predict we will be 10 - 6.
it hurts to say but that is one hell of a schedule hands down. but i will be there supporting us all the way regardless.

I SEE 11-5. And that was counting the Steeler game as a loss. I don't think they will be as good as last year. But predictions are for another thread entirely.

ok now im retarted for stating my opinion, shut up hotrod
Peace.
Now thats a solid well thought out purposeful post...Congrats kid you've come along LONG ways.
Except for the shut up part ah who am I kidding it added some spice

The problem with CD's post is that I am now holding my breath until he "decides" several games. If we can get those results, then the season can be cancelled and the Broncos can just mail in the results. That way, we can just concentrate on the poker games and the tractor pull contests.......

Whoever said turnovers were key, I agree. Duplicating that +22 ratio from last year will be hard. The O is going to have score more PPG this year, IMO. Say avg about 4-6 more PPG.
Probably have to show some ability to come from behind. Last year the team had some horrible 4th Q's. I looked at it last year, and the team was getting out-scored decisively in the 4th Q.

I can definately say we'll be better on Madden this year!
Really though, the offense should be a whole lot better this year, so I see us dominating more with RAC. Sheff and JW will help us there. The running game will just fall into place no matter who starts. No worries. I'm really concerned with the d line though. We need CB and GW to come back and be dominant this year. Other then that we'll be great on D.

Our RBs were a question before the start of last season too. I'm not as worried about the WR position as I was last year. I definitely think we'll start off the season better than the laying down in Miami and the first half of the S.D. game. At this point in TC, I think we have a better shot at the SB than last year despite the schedule.

I think the most important stat last year was how often we played with a lead. I believe the offense will be more explosive this year. I think we may have the makings of 2 #1 quality recievers. This will put more pressure on the opposing teams safeties, giving the Bells more room to run.
