Ron Dayne's frustrating training camp has taken yet another tough turn.

Dayne, who entered training camp as the No. 1 tailback, has a lingering turf toe injury that will keep him out of Saturday night's preseason game against Tennessee at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Coach Mike Shanahan said the injury is not serious and, if this were a regular-season game, Dayne would be able to play.

Dayne, who had five rushes for 12 yards Friday at Detroit before getting hurt, will have to wait another week to move up the depth chart. Dayne slid from No. 1 to No. 3 Aug. 7 when undrafted rookie Mike Bell jumped atop the depth chart.

"He has turf toe and it is sore, and if you

can't go, then you can't go," Shanahan said. "He can't do anything about that except go and get treatment and get ready to go next week."

Starting fullback Cecil Sapp also won't play. He is out with a groin injury. Shanahan said Sapp will be ready to practice Monday. Also not playing Saturday are defensive end Patrick Chukwurah (ankle) and Adam Meadows (hamstring). Both are expected back for the preseason game against Houston Aug. 27.

Rookie recover Brandon Marshall is improving from a posterior cruciate ligament injury. The team hopes he can play the final exhibition game Aug. 31 vs. Arizona.

Warren doing well

When Gerard Warren dislocated his big left toe in practice Aug. 5, the long-term concern was whether Warren - who reported in great shape to training camp - could stay in good shape.

So far, so good. Warren said he has lost 6 pounds since the injury and expects to practice in late August. That will give him a head start toward being ready for the Sept. 10 season opener at St. Louis.

"The team wanted me to maintain or lose weight, they didn't want me to go up while I was sitting out," Warren said. "But I'm going down. I'm losing. I feel great."

Warren has been riding an exercise bike, working on a treadmill and swimming.

Lelie could draw interest

The Broncos'

hope of trading holdout receiver Ashley Lelie improved after two major developments in the league.
In Minnesota, top receiver Koren Robinson was arrested on alcohol-related charges and could be suspended for a year by the NFL. The Vikings were light on receivers before the arrest and have an interest in Lelie.

In Philadelphia, coach Andy Reid said receiver Todd Pinkston is not progressing well from Achilles injuries. Like the Vikings, the Eagles are thin at the position. The Eagles have been linked to the Lelie talks several weeks.

Chicago is another team that has talked about Lelie.

The timing may be right, since trade value for Lelie could be lowered as the cut dates approach and receivers become available for no compensation costs.

Footnotes

Shanahan said receiver Javon Walker will participate in 10 to 20 plays along with the rest of the starting offense for his preseason debut. ... Defensive tackle Amon Gordon (knee) returned to practice. ... Shanahan said fourth-round pick Elvis Dumervil will play some defensive end Saturday night. Dumervil played mostly tackle at Detroit. He has been working at both positions in camp ... Expect a campaign to get former Broncos running back Floyd Little serious consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a veteran committee selection. ... There are several tickets available for Saturday night's game. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster.

It would be nice to cause the Bears and Vikes to get into a "mini bidding war" for Lelie. Not holding my breath though!

Jerry Angelo - "We'll give up a 5th rounder"

Brad Childress - "We'll give up a 6th and a 7th!"

Jerry Angelo - "A 5th and a practice squad player of your choosing!"

Brad Childress - "A 5th and a 6th!"

I'm not convinced that Shanahan will cut Lelie despite the cut date. I think the odd man out in this scenario is BVP.

Not sure that was suggested. I think the suggestion was more toward more players (WR's) being available after first cuts. BVP will be cut, but not during the first cutdowns. Who's going to take all of the snaps for the final preseason game. Plummer isn't going to play and you sure don't want the future to take all of the snaps, especially not w/the 3rd team OL!

The Vikings would be fools for not trying to get Lelie. They desperately need WR help and Lelie would burn on that carpet. He also would have the "chance" to be the #1. Childress came from Philly that runs the WCO. It's a perfect fit.

Is there not some kind of exemption list they can put Lelie on until he reports?

Turf toe, huh? Judging by Chris Brown and others, this can be a long recovery. Crazy thought, but could Dayne end up IR this year? Might be an attractive option to the team.

The "too stupid to report and lose over 1/4 of my salary in 2006" list was nixed late in the CBA process ;D

LOL Maybe we can put him on IR due to 'ego inflammation' ;D

Turf toe? Really don't know what sort of injury that is. If it's like "catchers thumb" in baseball, then it makes sense that he's definitely got a bad wheel.....dman

Ron Dayne has served his purpose. To provide motivation and a pace man for the Bells. Now hopefully he'll be cut or traded.

It's when the muscle has seperated from the bone. It takes forever to heal

That doesn't sound comfortable at all. Again, can see why one would have a bad wheel with that sort of injury. Thanks for educating me on this injury, always wondered what it really was.....dman

*Now , what muscle and what bone are we talking about?

Typically the big toe...but I'm not sure on the specifics of Ron Dayne's case. This is what effective ended Deion Sanders career before he came back to play nickel back

I don't think Dayne will make the team. As long as Cobbs looks decent he is younger.

Wow, Lelie may be traded after all? Insane, lets get something already for him!!

I'm telling you guys, this is the deal to get done:

Lelie for Darrion Scott

Scott is a backup DT for them and comes in often on passing plays to replace Pat Williams. He should be expendable and is equal value for Lelie. Last year he had 54 tackles and 4 sacks at DT and would be an upgrade for us while adding depth to an injury plagued DL.

Another interesting side note is that the Vikes are also thin at LB with their 1st rounder Greenway going down for the season. We could try to package Lelie and say Wells or Green to get Scott and a 5th.

Cobbs was ok in the first preseason game and if he has another decent showing. I wouldn't be suprised to see Dayne cut or traded at all. Maybe trade him to the Jets for a late round pick who knows or package him and Lelie.

It's so funny how everytime a receiver goes down Lelie is then linked to that team and his agent keeps on saying we hope to have a trade done any day now. I know an organization is never going to come out publicly and say how they feel about a guy or they have been in talks, but I just think that not that many teams really feel that highly about the guy to give up even a 3rd round pick.

Lelie did it to himself. It's not just the fines now but he'll have to take a 1 year deal next season to prove himself and lose millions in free agency with the added risk of injury.

I remember a couple of years ago when Ricky's season went up in smoke because he announced his "retirement" and there was talk of Mike Anderson being shipped to Miami for a 3rd. The team started featuring Mike in preseason games and he ran for some insane yardage only to rip his groin at the last minute so the trade didn't go down.

I can't help but wonder if Lelie showed up to camp and worked hard and the team featured him in preseason games (ESPECIALLY with Cutler's strong arm) then maybe that would be enough for a team like Minn, Philly, or even New England to be more willing to meet our terms.

As it is, Lelie's done everything back-ass-wards and now should realize what his perceived (non) value is around the league.

That could make some fans here want to keep him.

Our linebackers are going to be doing some serious cracking if we don't get one more hard tackling DT on the line. I think they are experimenting with a "soft defensive" concept. I think they are going to girl slap teams all year. They talk like Chiefs do perhaps our goal is too harsh language and bad intentions to scare offensive teams into submission?
