Tim McKernan has found himself over a barrel, so to speak.
The Barrel Man, the distinctive Denver Broncos ultimate fan, can no longer store, nor afford the insurance, on his Super Bowl XXXII barrel signed by the team. So he's put the barrel up for bid on eBay.
Starting bid is $9,999.95, but the barrel - with signatures from top team members such as John Elway and Terrell Davis - has been assessed from $40,000 to $75,000, McKernan said.
"There probably would be somebody who would like this and display it," McKernan said.
Ten percent of the winning bid will go to Jubilee House, a shelter for battered women in Gunnison. As for the rest of the dough, McKernan says "Charity begins at home, too." He and his wife, Becky, are thinking about buying property in Mexico and building a home.
McKernan said he's ready to part with his prized possession, and he hopes it goes to a casino, restaurant (Elway's perhaps?) or collector.
"It's one of those things I didn't think I'd ever give up," he said. "I thought I'd leave it to the kids eventually, but they'd probably fight over it. So this is a better way to go."
Barrel bidding ends on Tuesday. Go to eBay.com and type in "barrel man" in the search box.

Sell out.
And I love the excuse about not being all to afford the insurance on the barrel. If someone ever stole that thing, I think it would be quite easy to find and locate. It is not as if somebody is going to pay a 1,000 dollars for a stolen barrel and keep it locked up in their basement. They are going to show somebody. ****, the payed a 1000 bucks for that thing.
If I spent a 1000 ****ing dollars, much less 40,000, on a barrel you better believe that I am wearing that thing everywhere I go. Work, getting married whatever.

Barrelman has done his share. Over 30 years as the most recognizable Bronco fan on the planet.
If it's time to hang up the barrel, then however he chooses to do it, it's his gig. I'm glad to see it looks like he has recovered his health.
Hopefully this ends up with someone who appreciates not only the item, but it's history and the fan who made it famous.

I did, I've had the opportunity to meet Barrelman and his lovely wife several times over the years and know how great they both are. But I also know his medical bills have been mounting and I'd hate to see him have to sell off one of his most prized possessions without making some money to help.

Cut the old man some slack. He's got health problems. Noone has to pay a dime if they don't want it. Maybe Meck will buy it and make it the tip jar. Ha! He can't afford to go out like that anymore, he will catch a cold like George Allen and croak. That Leprechan was extremely scary for children under 21 too.

Can you really compare a limo to a barrel? A vehicle getting stolen is a common thing. Unless the guy wears that thing out and leaves it on the curb when he has to take a leak, some lunatic would have to kill him to get off of him. And lets be honest here, that would make national news.
Man Killed Over Barrel -- Story at 10
You would have to be the dumbest criminal on the face of this Earth to jack an old man for his famous barrel. You could never get rid of it. It's not like there is a black market for famous barrels.

Remember Animal House and when they destoyed the Lincoln at the bar? They turned that into insurance money and made it into a tank.

You are a ****ing asshole who has no clue about what the B-man has done for this organization on his own without the help of the Broncos.
When I first met time back in 2000 he was standing on the corner trying to scalp a ticket from pricks on the corner of Federal. I was in complete shock.
B-man not only deserves whatever he can get for that barrel he deserves to sit on the beach like a king IMO.

You know you are a real ****ing a-hole. B-man has been rocking Mile High for 30 years. I have no idea in the world how he was able to do it. We had a chance to really get to know him at the Dallas game last year. He sat with us on the bus for a good hour telling us old stories. Incredible stories. You have no clue what you are talking about.
Don't worry about Gonzo, he's just an attention whore and says **** to get people fired up.

Damn!! I wish I could justify buying it.
Barrelman has been great through the years. So much better than those dumb mascots like Dinger and even Rocky (Barrelman adds to the game Rocky diverts your attention - not my thing). Glad to hear from Meck that he is a good guy in person.
I wish him and his wife all the best.

We had the opportunity to get to talk with him for about an hour basically one on one in the bus last year the night before the dallas game.
The dude has been to hell and back supporting the Broncos. I'm astounded he was able to keep pace for 30 years. If any of you ever make it to Canton Ohio to visit the Hall of Fame and see where they Enshrined John Elway be sure to pay your respect to the B-man there as well. I value them the same in my book.

Barrel Man has gone to places were people who say they are diehards wouldn't dare go. He is a legend. Hope he gets his money, his place in Mexico and watches every game in good health however he chooses. He has a barrel in Canton and is a Hall of Famer as a person too. Anyone disses Barrelman has no sense of tradition and needs to go directly to Chiefs Planet and stay there.
What's the Chiefs tradition ?? answer BBQ and flooded porta pottys

You have been telling me for years that I have no rights to even an opinion about things American even though is am an American and grew up in the States went to school in the States fought in the US Army yet you and Alec tell me I have no say in the appalling mess my country finds her self in.
The bolded statement may be the most truthful thing you have ever typed.

Has he been to Broncos games in winter wearing only the barrel? I think I heard that. If so... I give my respects to the guy, even though I don't know much about him, (it's hard being a fan from so far away!) Broncos fans seem to think highly of him, and from the little I heard he seems like the most diehard fan ever. Props to him!

I remember seeing the Barrel Man at a game in LA leading a posse of LA’s finest in an attempt to recover his hat. Barrel Man was pointing out bad guys in black that were involved in the kidnapping of his cover.

Tim and Becky are true diehard Bronco fans in every sense of the word. I have had the priviledge of know them for years now. Things happen in life where you have to make sacrafices and this is one he has to make. Tim worked for the airlines (United) for years and got the bad end of the cutback/down sizing stick and pretty much saw any retirement benefits go away. I hope he sells the barrel for a million dollars and is able to make his and his wifes life alot easier in his golden years.
One of a kind fan, We are lucky to have had him.
PS: He did not wear the barrel commando style :)

I wonder how many of his old barrels he still has? He had 22 different ones with two being in the hall.
Perhaps we'll see a steady flow of them every year or two hit the auctions. Not a bad retirement plan. Good for him I say.
He'll still always be 'Barrel man' in the hearts of Bronco fans. And even if he does sell all of them all, all he has to do is make #23.
....then make ....#24.... then #25...and so on and so on.
Perhaps make a new one each game then cut it up into itty-bitty pieces and sell them off to the football card companies like they do with jerseys...
Or simply auction the whole thing off every week live from web cam aboard OF1 with Hooter girls in the background updating the bid board.
Maybe Meck will let me MC sometimes.
Don't get me started......
Good luck and Good health to you Barell man! I hope you make so much money that you moving to Mexico is because you want to and not just because you have to.

Time to update the Ring of Fame!!!!!!!!!
The guy is awesome, I had the pleasure meeting and talking to him at Southwest Plaza when he was selling his bobbleheads. I got one and told him what an honor it was to meet him. he told me he planned on doing the barrel for 2 more years to make it 30 years. But when I talked to him he really seemed tired, worn out. Anyway, the guy is a damn legend and deserves that respect around the league.
Its a damn shame what happened to him at United and I hope he makes enough money to the point where he doesnt have to worry about it for the rest of his life. I just wonder where in Mexico he plans to move to.

I remember my first game at Mile High. I was just as excited about seeing Barrel Man in the stands as I was actually being in the seats. I hope he makes a killing on that barrel - from a Bronco fan. From what I read, he does a lot for the community and never turns other fans down when they ask for pics or autographs. I wish him the best.
Edit: The price for the barrel is probably more of an indication of what he represented to the Broncos and their fans than the actual autographs on the barrel.

F the Leprechan!| He is in it for himself. I was at a Broncos party in Miami/Fort Lauderdale for fans after the 2nd superbowl and we asked the Lep what was the best thing about the game. He replied, "seeing me up on the big screen!" He isnt like Tim aka Barrellman. Lep is a self promotor. Go try standing next to him when he stands behind the goalposts for an extra point. He needs the spotlight so dont block his umbrella or his outfit. He needs the exposure damnit!
