My wife and I bought our first home a couple of months ago and we're good and settled in now. She's been bugging me constantly about getting a dog and I figured the time was finally right.

He's a sharpei and he's about 10 weeks old. We'll hopefully be picking him up this Friday, otherwise it'll be Sunday. We went to Petsmart today and bought the majority of the stuff we'll need. My wife's been doing tons of research and we've had The Dog Whisperer on the season pass for awhile so I feel pretty confident about everything.

The only thing is, we're still trying to decide on a name. Originally, we were going to name him Jerry O. after the bass player from The Misfits but the wife has cooled to that a bit. Here's the current list we're trying to pick from......

Ruben
Capone
Diesel
Duke (after The Duke, #7)
Tombstone (after #87)

Any suggestions you have for a name or just general suggestions for a new dog owner would be greatly appreciated.

Shar pei's are cool dogs... however, they have horrendous gas. When they get flatulent, it's bad enough to melt your nose hairs and burn your eyes. Seriously. :P

Our shar pei was named "Wrinkles"...

As gross as it is, it's true...

I remeber one of my childhood friends had one and flies always hung around that area.

Oh man! We just lost a Shar-pei last year that had been in our family for twelve years. She was the best dog I ever had, and I have had a lot of them over the years. We got a Bulldog at the same time, and she was great, too. Our Shar-pei was named Pugsley, and she was the same color as yours.

You'll love him. He'll probably have lots of skin problems, though. You should ask your vet about some preventative care next time you're in. And Pugsley had the surgery to roll her eyelids back at about one year. A lot of them have their skin grow to where they irritate the eyes, and it can eventually make them blind.

Congratulations!

Oh, and of the choices you mentioned, I'd go with Ruben.

Here's Pugsley and Athena (the Bulldog) in a picture with our son a few years ago. Pugsley hated the camera - we have almost no pictures of her with her eyes open. Athena, on the other hand, would ham it up.

Man, I miss those dogs!
