Rolling along
A year ago, quarterback David Carr rolling outside probably would have ended with him dumping off a pass for a minimal gain. On Saturday, Carr rolled out twice in short-yardage situations and kept running to gain a pair of critical first downs.

Carr fumbled the snap on fourth-and-one but managed to get the first down, and he gained two yards on a third-and-one attempt.

"A lot of that was because of the Kansas City defense," Carr said. "It won't be like that every week."

That is too funny! Just cementing what Denver fans have been stating for years...

HERE COMES THE BOOTLEG! 1st down!

Herm will simply tell the media his defense is playing as well as they can considering they don't have very much talent. That's what he did last year in New York.

After setting another NFL record for getting sacked, nobody got near Carr, and I think as he gets his confidence back, we will be seeing a different QB.

The zone blocking looked great, and yeah, it looked exactly like Denver South.

KC can try to contain the bootleg if they want, but in the end they wont.
Its a matter of picking your poison........the QB rolls out, or the runningback runs off tackle underneath...............I think theyre gonna let the QB roll out.:)

Kubiak can't save Carr. He is horrid and has zero field vision. Top it off he is a wimp. Bust Central. I've known it for years and finally the excuses are gone. The o-line got a bad rap last year all due to carr being totally inept. The O-Line played great and this zero still ran instead of passing. He gets exposed this year for the fraud that he is. He is ruining the potential of Andre Johnson.

Disastrous night

The grounding penalty wasn’t QB Casey Printers’ worst play. In the third quarter, he slipped while going back to pass and then dropped the ball. The Texans recovered at the Kansas City 22. They used the field position to get three points on Kris Brown’s 22-yard field goal.

Here’s a tip, Casey: If you’re ever going to play quarterback for Herm Edwards, you’d better learn to hold on to the ball.

What we learned

The new Chiefs defense looks like the old one. The Chiefs still couldn’t pressure the quarterback, they couldn’t cope with the bootleg and they couldn’t stop the run.

The hot seat

We understand it’s only the preseason and things were predictably bland. We’d still like to believe defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham will find a way to do better on Thursday night in New York.

Houston’s bootleg befuddles first-team defense early in preseason opener.

The Chiefs getting burned on the bootleg? Now that seemed natural.

The Edwards era started with a vanilla defense, a wobbly backup offense, and a quarterback who burned Kansas City on the bootleg. Had it not been a preseason game, this 24-14 loss to the Texans in front of a half-empty stadium could’ve really raised questions about the millions Kansas City plunked down to resurrect its defense.

It should be noted that when the first units left the game after the first quarter, the score was tied 7-7. It should also be noted that the defense gave up 85 yards in two series during that time. Against a Texans team that finished 2-14 last year. And a quarterback that was used as a human tackle dummy.

But David Carr, rejuvenated from the addition of new coach Gary Kubiak, looked like Jake Plummer on Saturday night.

Actually our defense played better than it appeared. We had guys in the right place and they just didn't finish the play or were a bit too agressive. Those things are very fixable. We just need a few more games of tune up.

And I agree with that. I know that Denver will do better than they performed in that game. I know that Kevin Jones wouldn't do what he did against Denver in a regular season game. My point is, I don't think KC will do as bad as we performed in that game. Tamba Hali was our second biggest offseason acquisition and he didn't even play. Hali is a hell of alot better than Eric Hicks and will have a big impact on the defense. Our mistakes were minor ones that can be fixed.

Houston obviously gameplanned for that game. Whether it was the bootleg or throwing alot of quick slants to beat the cover 2, Kubiak thinks it counts towards something to gameplan in the preseason. Herm Edwards wants to win but he knows it isn't so important to win that you have to gameplan to win. Herm Edwards said himself that although he knew they would use the bootleg he wasn't going to gameplan to stop it. He wanted to see players just go out there and play. That was a good thing. That one game proved to Edwards that Eric Hicks cannot be our starter at left defensive end.

I'm really trying not to be a homer. I realize we have some problems to fix on defense but I think we will fix them.

That is pretty common among the teams that have underperformed for many years. New coaches going to losing teams have a tendency to put a little more effort into pre-season. Any sort of winning can help these coaches convince their players to buy into the system.

True. To tell the truth, I wish the Chiefs had gameplanned to a degree. We didn't underperform last year but we are implementing changes to our offense and defense so I would have liked to see how they would have performed in a real game. I guess most teams usually save that for around the 3rd preseason game where the starters get alot more playing time.

EXACTLY why the Lions were more up than the Broncos were. Kubiak and Marinelli both want to establish something from the very beginning - to sell their teams (and the fans) that the new coaches are there to win and have a plan that will win. This isn't hard to figure out.

As for crying about the Texans actually gameplanning - that's the weakest excuse-making since the Democrats lost the 2004 elections. What's Herman famous for saying? "HELLLOOO! You play to win the game!". No **** the Texans gameplanned. Why wouldn't you gameplan an NFL game? If Edwards DIDN'T have a gameplan, he should be fired. This is the NFL. Drawing up a gameplan is what coaches are paid to do.

Every team gameplans to a certain extent. It is just a lot less important in the playcalling in a preseason game. The roll outs and bootlegs are a part of the CORE of Kubiaks offense. He also knows KC fairly well having gameplanned against them twice last year.

What I find Interesting is the lack of COACHING the adjustments during the game from this "upgraded defensive staff". If I were the Chiefs I would not be happy with the way the players lacked execution against what Hou ran.

I'm not happy with how the game went. However, I really think the coaches meant to not make changes in the playcalling. They said that there were going to go out there and pretty much just play out of there base defense and offense and see what guys could do. That is what they did.

We were able to run the bootleg on you when you had Neil Smith and Co. on defense...its the scheme, the ends are taught to get up field, eschewing their responsibilities to get to the QB. Dont blame Hicks because your defensive coordinator is an ass hat.
