But seriously, it does sound like our D-Line depth, as most people guessed, leaves a lot to be desired. Not really cause for panic, but it is looking more likely that Lelie will be dealt for a DT.

I liked it when the local sports boob put the mike in Big Al's face on the sidelines and basically says, "Dude, you're third down defense sucks, just like it did against Pitt." Al gave him the cold eye look. I thought he was going to chew his face off. He asked Lynch the same question and John just went into his diplomatic "talking-to-a-dip****" mode.

There was some big-time sucking going on out there on the DL tonite. They are adjusting to new roles so there's going to be some pain in transition.

Our offense is going to be considerably improved this year. Defense, about the same--maybe a little weaker.

It seemed that the D was in the wrong frame of mind, and were just not prepared to play for whatever reason. I saw some hitting, but I think we also saw a few missed and/or busted assignments. I think that eight man rush was stupid as h3ll, and the Broncos paid for it. To be frank, this could be Coyer's make or break year......

The Bears gave up 28 points to San Fran today. Guess the Niners are going to have the greatest offense known to man this year and the Bears D is garbage this season. It's a shame. Maybe they can get draft a middle linebacker next year. :pity:

It will be fine. It the third preseason game that we need to worry about. It would be nice to have another quality veteran starter in middle next to Warren

Oh yea, they had some issues there but i liked the push that Kenard Lang got in the backfield. That was promising but now they need to learn to wrap up.

We really really need D-Line help .... new guys.

This problem was not just missing Warren and Brown, because Veal and Lang played well.... we're really screwed on the D-line.

Greg Ellis would be a godsend, but a solid DT would be even better.

How about Dan Wilkinson? You gotta believe he'd come outta retirement to play in a platoon-based defense on a team with a real chance for a ring ... he's played practically every snap for the last three years - sell him on playing in a rotation.

I saw alot of good things on defense. Roc, Foxworthy and others played pretty well. Face it, our Defense isn't going to line up against anyone in a vanilla package and stop them. That is why the Broncos use schemes to free up linebackers, blitz corners and safetys etc. I watched Dumerville quite a bit last night and his size will not be a detriment. He played well, made several tackles that the announcers didn't give him credit for. That man really plays all out. Another good pick up by the Broncos.

Terrific summary of the Denver 'D' in the pre-season vis-a-vis the regular season.

Even so, I think everyone saw reason for concern. I mean, c'mon, the absence of Courtney Brown & Gerard Warren can't possibly make that much difference.

The middle of the line was a sieve.

Well, it was not as bad as everyone is bitching about ;D

I really can not believe people are calling Coyer out for Preseason playcalling against a team with Zero tape to evaluate. Priceless. Hello, it was a preseason game with basic stuff and no real GAMEPLANNING. Sheesh!

That being said, the defense did play uninspired and acted like the QB was still wearing a Red Jersey (which the broncos do not really use like other teams) and afraid of Hitting him. Outside of that, the run defense was porous and inconsistent but there was a pass rush even with Three rushing on every play last night. That was encouraging.

There is also no question that the DL is the Weakest, least talented, underperforming unit on the team though. Going up against the Lions 1st OL until the third Quarter and they were getting the **** kicked out of them in the running game. BS.

wabbit
08-12-2006, 07:31 AM
I'd agree Med except that the defense should be way ahead of the offense at this stage of training camp, and that doesn't appear to be the case.

Also, the D-line depth issue is always crucial when you have a starting DE that needs an Ambo-Cab for his personal use.

I guess I didn't watch the same game you did. The dline isn't that bad, at all. Kitna got flat out lucky he wasn't sacked on the lions first drive. Also there were some missed tackles on that first drive.

Some people have the glass is half empty perspective here. I'm on the other side saying the glas is half full. Rotate in Warren and Brown, and that dline stops the Lions and Kitna.

yeah. Im the glass is half full guy too. I liked what I saw out of lang. that was a good pickup. add warran and we automaticaly get better on the dline yesterday. And if Brown can stay healty for one season, I think he can get good pressure and get good numbers. I agree that the Dline is our weak spot, but im not going to give up on them after one preseason game, especially if warran and brown was out. there were still positive things about them.

Yes the starting defense didn't look too great, but you figure you are missing Warren, Brown, and Bailey.

But on the positive, Lang look good, Preditor almost had two sacks himself just missed as he was getting held at the last minute.

Yea, the upside was definitely Chukwurah. He seemed pretty effective out there on the edge. MAN, we could use a little speed out there.

Lang looked decent. It really is hard to judge the D without Warren and Bailey out there. Missing Brown shouldn't really factor in much. He basically did nothing last year, and was healthy most of the season.

Dumervil played well. He lined up at both DE & DT and got good pressure several times. He also showed good recognition in making a stop on a draw play. I was pleased with his showing.

Chuk should have had two sacks in the game, but he didn't wrap the QB up. While it's annoying that he didn't finish, it's encouraging that he was able to get good pressure rushing off the edge (once was with the first team).

I tried to watch the DL in the first half especially since it was basically our best DL with two Starters injured. They got Zero push on running plays outside of two players Lang and Dumervil. Those two were very good last night, but I had to LMAO when I saw DET double Dumervil twice in the same series!

I am not really glass half empty here with the pass rush, but I am concerned the DL Rush Defense got almost Zero Penetration outside of those two. The LB's were very poor in tackling for the most part too, but they are not Prone to that From past experience.
