Fieldwork
Denver worked on some plays for Friday's preseason opener at Detroit, including some goal-line work. Coach Mike Shanahan said the team has watched film of the Lions and is preparing for what it has seen from Detroit personnel in recent seasons.
As for the highlights, it was a good day for the defensive backs. Backup safety Curome Cox continued an outstanding training camp by being aggressive and knocking away a few balls. Rookie undrafted player Tyler Everett continued to open eyes with an interception of starter Jake Plummer. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth also had an impressive day.
Position battle
The race for the backup receiver spots will be among the best battles to monitor. Whatever happens, it appears Denver will be deeper at the bottom of the receiving depth chart than last year. Rookie Brandon Marshall is the likely candidate to be the No. 3 receiver and newcomers David Kircus and Brian Clark are pushing veterans Darius Watts, David Terrell, Charlie Adams and Todd Devoe for the final spots. Denver likely will keep six receivers. If Kircus and Clark have good camps, that mean Watts, Adams, Devoe and Terrell will battle for a final spot.
Point after
Rod Smith hasn't practiced in a week and won't play Friday night at Detroit, but the man still is working. During practice, Smith was instructing Watts on route running. Smith is tireless and even though he's not on the field, he is assisting the team.
Cutler watch
Shanahan said Cutler has flourished since being promoted to the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Plummer on Monday. As the top backup, Cutler -- picked No. 11 in the draft -- has been working against the No. 1 defense. Shanahan said the work against the first string has brought out the best in the former Vanderbilt star.
Quote of the day
"The first unit will be out there 10 (to) 12 plays ... You get a chance to evaluate your second, third and fourth-teamers in a game situation against a team that - with a lot of new coaches - wants to play well."
- Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on the plan against Detroit on Friday
Shanny barometer
Shanahan has been very vocal this week. He spent Wednesday morning encouraging several players, mostly younger players. Early in practice, he was instructing and working with cornerback Karl Paymah. Later, Shanahan was congratulating Marshall for a solid effort.
(The thing I like most about Cutler is he's the kind of QB that rises to the occasion)
P.S. Practice is at 8:30am tommorrow for only 1 hour before they fly off to Detroit in the early PM. God I cant believe we get Bronco football in less than 48 hours!
