Fieldwork

Denver worked on some plays for Friday's preseason opener at Detroit, including some goal-line work. Coach Mike Shanahan said the team has watched film of the Lions and is preparing for what it has seen from Detroit personnel in recent seasons.

As for the highlights, it was a good day for the defensive backs. Backup safety Curome Cox continued an outstanding training camp by being aggressive and knocking away a few balls. Rookie undrafted player Tyler Everett continued to open eyes with an interception of starter Jake Plummer. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth also had an impressive day.

Position battle

The race for the backup receiver spots will be among the best battles to monitor. Whatever happens, it appears Denver will be deeper at the bottom of the receiving depth chart than last year. Rookie Brandon Marshall is the likely candidate to be the No. 3 receiver and newcomers David Kircus and Brian Clark are pushing veterans Darius Watts, David Terrell, Charlie Adams and Todd Devoe for the final spots. Denver likely will keep six receivers. If Kircus and Clark have good camps, that mean Watts, Adams, Devoe and Terrell will battle for a final spot.

Point after

Rod Smith hasn't practiced in a week and won't play Friday night at Detroit, but the man still is working. During practice, Smith was instructing Watts on route running. Smith is tireless and even though he's not on the field, he is assisting the team.

Cutler watch

Shanahan said Cutler has flourished since being promoted to the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Plummer on Monday. As the top backup, Cutler -- picked No. 11 in the draft -- has been working against the No. 1 defense. Shanahan said the work against the first string has brought out the best in the former Vanderbilt star.

Quote of the day

"The first unit will be out there 10 (to) 12 plays ... You get a chance to evaluate your second, third and fourth-teamers in a game situation against a team that - with a lot of new coaches - wants to play well."

- Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on the plan against Detroit on Friday

Shanny barometer

Shanahan has been very vocal this week. He spent Wednesday morning encouraging several players, mostly younger players. Early in practice, he was instructing and working with cornerback Karl Paymah. Later, Shanahan was congratulating Marshall for a solid effort.

(The thing I like most about Cutler is he's the kind of QB that rises to the occasion)

P.S. Practice is at 8:30am tommorrow for only 1 hour before they fly off to Detroit in the early PM. God I cant believe we get Bronco football in less than 48 hours!

I cant wait either!!! I want to see if Mike Bell lives up to the hype. I hope they keep him in there longer than 10-12 snaps so we can truly evaluate his play.

You don't get much more insightful than Bill Ha! Good to see we're "working on some plays" and "watching film"

And if watts and devoe have good camps the rest of them will be fighting for the final spot.

This guy can say less with more words than my mother in law.

The more I get to know Rod Smith, the more I admire the man. Throughout the years, the players I have almost idolized were Floyd Little, Randy Gradishar, John Elway, and now Rod Smith. All these men were fine men, as well as players. Rod may be the best of the bunch.

Is there any doubt that when Rod retires he'll stay on as a coach?

I don't think it's a given that he will. From the little i've heard him talk about life after football i'm leaning towards no.

Sounds like he allready is. Sounds like Blade has taken to second string like a fish to water. I think Shanahan has to control himself not to gush out EUREKA! I've seen Mike long enough to know when he's covering dissapointment or enthusiasm. Blade is so far ahead of the curve compared to the other 2 of the big 3 it's not even funny. At this point, I have no doubt that Cutler should of been at least a top 5 pick. I still haven't found a weakness in his game or demeanor. It's almost surreal.

Look at the differences between Rod and T.O. How surprised are you that after T.O. threw his helmet across the field, allegedly, he developed a tight hammy. I guess an MRI confirmed an injury, but it seems rather convenient to me. T.O. rides his bike while mugging for the media. Rod is on the field trying to help the Claw. Absolutely zero reason to even play Rod till his hammy heals. He probably knows even the defensive side of the playbook by the word. He's left a few hints his time to ride off is near. I too hope that he coaches WR's. Bowlen is such a great owner...I'm not sure there is a specific limit on the number of coaches you can have. Make him the assistant waterboy. He would go down as the most expensive waterboy in the history of the NFL, but worth every drop.

I'm watching Custer, and they showed a picture of Crazy Horse and he looks just like that fraud in Boulder who faked his heritage. It was just uncanny. OK...back to business...

I'm starting to wonder if we won't move Jake as early as next year. He's too young and healthy to accept a backup role...maybe he can come back someday as a backup. I'm starting this Cutler kid is going to be ready sooner than even I thought. I think Jake might garner a #2 or #3 if he has a decent year. It just seems like Blade shrugs off each challenge as business as usual. Shanny said he didn't even lose a step, in fact, he improved...he made the jump to second string without a hiccup. This is a rookie not even out of camp yet.

BOOYAH!

"IF" Kircus and Clark have good camps? Has he been watching ANYTHING going on at Dove Valley. Khan and company have already told us that they both had good camps....SHEEESH...
