Broncos Training Camp Report (http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=254336&pid=5299542&mode=threaded&show=&st=&#entry5299542)By Cecil Lammey

The Broncos were in full pads today, and even though they were only practicing in the morning, they seemed to all be very weary. Mike Shanahan had them practice over 2 hours and had this to say after the morning session, “Yeah, we had a good practice today. We were a little tired obviously going in pads and going for over two hours. I thought we had some good effort, and I was pleased with the way played over all.” NFL.com’s Gil Brandt, and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen were among those in attendance. Let’s get right to it…

Jake Plummer had a so-so day. He never really wows you, but has been pretty consistent in camp so far. He did throw a pick on a sideline route. But then he scrambled around and found an open Brandon Marshall in the endzone for a touchdown.

Jay Cutler had another solid day. His long passes were sailing a little bit, and indication to me that his arm may be a little tired. I know that Jay has been working hard on and off the field to make the most of his opportunity.

Bradlee Van Pelt actually looked okay. Just okay. He had a nice pass to Brian Clark that was gasp a deep pass. Well, deep for BVP anyway. He is still playing scared IMHO.

Mike Bell had a nice run off tackle that he cut back up the gut for a big gain. He was “wowing” the crowd, and fans seemed to “ooh” and “ahh” every time he carried the ball. He’s still showing that trademark power, that has catapulted him to the top of the depth chart. I liked the way he was catching passes today too. His pass blocking is very good for a rookie as well. The grind of practice is getting to some players, Coach Shanahan had this to say, “Yeah, everybody’s sore. Everybody’s tired, unless they are hurt. Those are the only guys that stay out. What I mean by hurt is injured, where they can’t go. There’s a lot of guys out there that are very sore with all of the contact we’ve had over the last 10 days, but you have to fight through it. There is not an easy way to do it. I’ve been pleased with the effort. By no means has it been perfect, but that is what practice is for.”

Tatum Bell is pissed. There is a rage quietly building inside him. He has been very calm on the outside, but privately he will state his real opinion. He feels as though the Broncos’ coaching staff doesn’t trust him to be the #1 back. We shall see if Tatum uses this to motivate himself, or if it will be his ruin. He practiced with a chip on his shoulder today. He showed good hands, but didn’t really stand out running the ball.

Ron Dayne is looking motivated. He made a double spin move to the open field that few backs his size can make. If he hadn’t looked so downtrodden last week, he might have held onto his starting job. Expect Dayne to look good in the preseason because that is what he does every year. And this year should be no different, especially now that Dayne is running with the 3rd team.

Cedric Cobbs showed some power today. Too little, too late Cedric.

Damien Nash did nothing to stand out.

Brandon Miree had a great juke move to get into the open field. It was the best run I’ve seen from him. Too bad he won’t make the team.

Cecil Sapp did not practice today.

Rod Smith was out of practice again today.

Javon Walker came back, and made it through the whole day. He did pull up on a couple of routes, and I think his knee was bothering him still, just a little bit.

Brandon Marshall is a great route runner. He can get open with ease on most db’s. With his size, he makes it hard for a cornerback to defend him. As aforementioned he caught a TD pass from Jake today and did a nice job snatching the ball out of the air. John Lynch is looking forward to seeing him play, “I think Brandon Marshall is a guy who continues to show up. Myself, I am looking for a guy like (Defensive Tackle) Elvis Dumervil to step up. I just got all over him in practice, but that is part of being a player. You have to be accountable for your actions, but I think I have liked what I have seen from him and now it is time to show it below the lights. I am looking forward to it. The guy has produced at every level, and I am anxious to see if he can do it here.”

Darius Watts had fewer drops than usual.

David Terrell continued to show consistent hands.

David Kircus is making a strong push to make this team. Will it be enough? I don’t know, but the kid is sure trying hard. He made a very nice catch on an underthrown pass from Van Pelt. The ball landed right on his shoulder and he reached up and snagged it back to the “bread basket”. The preseason will be where Kircus will make his strongest case to make the team. We’ll see if playing against his former team, the Lions, will be a motivating factor for David.

Brian Clark made some nice catches and could have a PS spot in his future.

Speaking of motivation. Tony Scheffler is going home for this weekend’s game. Well, not exactly home, but close enough. He has already given out 40 tickets to his family for the Lions/Broncos game. Scheffler grew up in Michigan, and played his college ball at Western Michigan. He looks game ready. Tony made every catch today. Even the poorly thrown Van Pelt passes he seemingly hauled in with ease. He shows great extension when going up for a pass.

More from the sidelines tomorrow!

Well, you have this...

...and then this...

"He showed good hands, but didn’t really stand out running the ball."

He's got nothing to complain about.

The hard truth is that there is no such thing as "seniority privilege" on this team. Tatum STILL has to work on his problems (blocking, vision, etc.) to be #1. I hope he figures this out, soon...

Thanks for the update Falconer, hope everything goes well for you.

I liked the way he was catching passes today too. His pass blocking is very good for a rookie as well.

I'll be damned. This Mike Bell guy is started to impress even me. Didn't he get the memo that undrafted rookie FA guys aren't supposed to pass block and catch passes as well?

High praise for Marshall as well. I really hope this translates onto game days.
