WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sixty percent of Americans oppose the U.S. war in
Iraq and a majority would support a partial withdrawal of troops by year's end, a CNN poll said on Wednesday.
It was the CNN poll's highest number opposing the war since fighting began in March 2003, a figure that has risen steadily since then, according to the Opinion Research Corp. survey conducted last week on behalf of the cable network.
The poll showed 36 percent of respondents said they were in favor of the war -- half the peak 72 percent who supported the war as it began, said the poll of 1,047 Americans.
The telephone survey, which had an error margin of 3 percentage points, showed 61 percent believed at least some U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2006.
Voter anger over the Iraq war, plagued by insurgent and sectarian violence with a daily civilian death toll, was cited in the Connecticut Democratic primary defeat Tuesday of U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record), who strongly backed President George W. Bush's war effort.

Wars thankfully aren't fought with poll numbers. More people in this country seem more worried about who won "Idol" or who in Hollywood is getting married for the 10th time that won't last as long their previous marriage to learn what's really going on in the world.

Well, much of the media would like to ignore facts that don't go with their beliefs and what they want others to believe, but it is a fact Iraq was also sponsoring terrorism, mainly at Samon Pak where they held training camps and I believe in the northern part of the country. Hussein also offered a lot of money to families whose sons carried out a suicide bombings. Why on Earth would he do that if wasn't agreeing with those actions? And all of this is fact!
I mean, it would be nice if people used their own common sense. Every middle eastern country as terrorists organizations inside their countries and/or helping terrorists with money, but we're supposed to believe Iraq was different and didn't have any and didn't support terrorist groups? Come on, that just flies in the face of common sense. Anybody who really believes Iraq was the only country in that region not involved in terrorism wants to be fooled and doesn't want to think rationally or with any sense.

Thank you, you're making my argument for me by naming othe countries with terrorist ties, just like I mentioned. I don't recall stating Iraq had more terrorism ties than this or that country, you can argue those semantics all day if you like. Bottom line is Iraq had sanctions put upon them and they weren't following them. SA, Iran nor Pakistan did not have sanctions at the time, much less violating them. As been pointed out, there's a problem with terrorism all through the ME, so why not start with Afghanistan who housed the Taliban and responsible for 9/11 and Iraq who was violating sanctions that had been applied after invading another country just for the heck of it and was helping to train terrorists at Samon Pak? I know this may make too much sense though.

This news story is only the tip of an iceberg. Last spring two professors argued convincingly in Foreign Affairs (link below) that from the moment Bush took office the US has been pushing to achieve first strike nuclear capability over China and Russia -- something we didn't have during the Cold War.
Their article is an eye opener. The two professors pointed out that the former Soviet nuclear deterrent is seriously degraded. The Russian sub fleet rusts in port. Many of their ICBMs were lost in the breakup of the soviet state or have become unreliable due to age. And their strategic bombers are now concentrated at only a few bases -- hence, vulnerable. Not only this, a gaping hole now exists in the Russian early warning radar network. Russia is blind to their east. US trident subs off the coast of Kamchatka can lob nukes into Moscow without being detected.
China has only a few dozen ICBMs and is even more vulnerable to a US first strike.
This probably explains Bush's unilateral abrogation of the ABM missile treaty in 2002 and his emphasis on the star wars defensive shield. Critics point out that star wars in fact it makes no sense from the standpoint of defense but only as a part of an offensive capability.
Awareness of their increasing vulnerability evidently prompted Russia to try to beef up their nuclear deterrent force. Putin recently announced the commission of two new nuclear subs this year.
This would certainly explain Rummy's concern over a Russian sub he can't track. Clearly, the world is at an unstable historical moment, hence extremely dangerous, esp given the neo con agenda, probably the most perilous time since the Cuban missile crisis.
Thanks Earl for picking up on this. MG

Barry ... sorry, sir, while it is true there was a quasi-terrorist training camp for a time in the unregulated Kurdish north of Iraq, that section of the country was completely outside Saddam's jurisdiction.
(And, btw, it was also outside the no-fly zone that was working so well under the Clinton administration.)
Further, these vain attempts to link Saddam with Islamic fundamentalist terror groups is just plain silly. Saddam was 100% secular, and couldn't stand religious adherants.
In reading your post, I'm struck by how very close it is to a verbatim transcript of what Bill O'Reilly said on his show recently. Right down to "all of this is fact."

This also probably explains Bush's switch several years ago to a nuclear first strike policy - which was unprecedented. The new policy amounts to muscle flexing -- though Dr Helen Caldicott would probably add that it also reflects unfulfilled sexual fantasies...
The neo cons have taken us into uncharted territory.

Barry, your logic on Saddam is roughly eqivalent to someone in Europe or Asia or Africa saying, in the mid-1980s:
"Ronald Reagan supports Nazi white supremecists. He really, really does. It's well known that several Aryan terrorist training sites exist in the western USA ... in Idaho."That was true in 1985. But can you extrapolate that Reagan was an Aryan fighter? No.
Same freakin' thing, brah!

Is that like Bush's hired guns, who never served a day, calling war heroes cowards? They invented the term "Swift Boat." How about when they lied about Max Cleland, saying that he was drunk and playing with a grenade when he lost an arm and both legs? I especially liked the one where they spread the rumor that McCain's time at the Hanoi Hilton may have made him a little crazy, or the nighttime calls in SC where they told voters that McCain was the father of a black child (one of his adopted children is african-american). The best one, of course, is when Cheney (who got 8 rather questionable deferments) said that Kerry's purple hearts were "Questionable." Of course, although Cheney might not know anything about being shot at, he sure knows something about shooting others.
ANYTHING to get elected? The Dems can't shine the Repugs boots when it comes to dirty tricks. It's funny when those with no honor whatsover question the honor of others. Especially, when it's a bunch of deferment monkeys questioning the honor of combat veterans.
