View Full Version : Al Davis compares Elway...to Jim Plunkett?

Seriously, is Al Davis completely senile? He obviously doesn't like John Elway much. In one interview, he basically claims (in so many words) that Jim Plunkett was as good as Elway, and that Rich Jackson was the best player the Broncos ever had (with all due respect to Rich Jackson, in Broncos history, there is Elway and there is everybody else).

From Jim Armstrong's column today:
Al Davis, making his case for Jim Plunkett in the Hall of Fame: "I do respect John Elway, but if Jim Plunkett had had the same start with an organization that was really a pretty good organization, he would have dominated. He has as good a record as Elway, he beat Elway head to head, and at Stanford he won the Rose Bowl."

And then, there is this from his last column, regarding Al Davis' comments about Rich "Tombstone" Jackson:
Davis, on Jackson, the one called Tombstone: "He's the best player they ever had."

He's still bitter because he didn't have the balls to pull the trigger and include Howie Long in the deal that would have brought Elway to the Raiders. A rather stupid move on his part since the Raiders had as much talent as anybody back in 1983. Some guys can never admit it when they choke. Not even 23 years later.

If Al Davis EVER shows up here on the orangemane...I'll negative rep his ass faster than you can say "Liver Spot!".

What's really funny though is that him bringing down Elway he had to say that the Broncos had a good organization!! So he had to compliment Reeves/Shanny to make his point!! I bet that hurt him a little.

Al Davis? You mean people still care about what Al Davis says? ???

That guy is as irrelevant as the organization he owns.

What, is he trying to "clean up" for every bad decision he made, trying to make it look "not so bad"? This should be one hell of a house cleaning and obviously will be hilarious. Of course they weren't that bad Al and you had a reason for each one to "just win baby". :~ohyah!:

Jim Plunkett was a joke compared to Elway. Davis is such an entertaining little troll.

Hmm, what is Shanahan's record against the Raiders again? Pretty good considering not much talent according to old farty Davis. Nice talent you've been accumulating lately Al, LOL!!!

Jim Plunkett for the hall of fame?

Jim Plunkett?

Is that right?

Is Al Davis trying to get Jim Plunkett in the hall of fame?

Who is trying to kid? That guy was atrocious. Even when he played for the Raiders he sucked. He was like the Trent Dilfer/Jake Plummer (Arizona days) of his generation. And unlike Jake, he never stopped sucking or getting injured -- EVER!

Al Davis wants Jim Plunkett in the hall of fame? That man really is senile.

In his defense, that decade was the last one he can remember clearly.

Is it me, or does he resemble a scrotum these days...

Jim Plunkett was a capable QB for a few years there and played with a lot of guile and determination. Of all the former Raiders he is about the classiest of the group and really was too nice a guy for that organization. Having said all that should he be in the Hall of Fame, of course not.

With all due respect, this is how players get consideration for the HOF. Their organizations start pimping them. I wish Denver would do it. A lot of the players haven't gotten consideration because the Broncos weren't consistently putting their names out in front of the league.

I don't think Plunkett comes close to being HOF material but at least he has his senile old owner baiting the hook. You never know but some of the dumb "sportswriters" out there will probably bite.

Some numbers for the immortal Jim Plunkett:

Total number of 3000-yard seasons: 0

TD-INTs for his career: 164-198

Career Completion %: 52.5%

Career Passing Yards: 25,882

The funny thing is that even for the Raiders, his performance was less than stellar. In five seasons, he averaged 1846 yards passing with 11 TDs and 11 INTs.

I started watching football about the middle of Plunkett's esteemed career, so I won't pretend to be an expert on the guy. But what I remember about him is that he wore a helmet that looked way too small for his head.

I'll agree with that. Here in the bayo hes a legend, more for his off field generosity more than his play. He seems like a great guy.

Very good point.

Compare the franchise histories. The Raiders have played in 5 Super Bowls to the Broncos 6. The Raiders have won 3 Super Bowls to the Broncos 2. The Raiders have won 12 AFC West championships to the Broncos 8. The Raiders have won 25 playoff games to the Broncos 17.

And the Raiders have 13 Hall of Famers to the Broncos 1.

That's a joke.

hey let me tell ya something. A$$ Al Davis is real cool. When I lived in El Segundo A$$ Al gave me free tickets that is till he found out I was a Bronco fan. Then he sent me a bill. Man I was the only Bronco fan in that town. After they beat us out of contention they went to Buffalo. I went to the local sports bar to watch their first play off game in like seven years. Buffalo creamed their ass in the snow. I got into two fights on the way home. Christ, I am still laughing about that.

The only reason Plunkett has any of those stats is because he was in the league so long.

Al would have shown a little more credibility if he had said Ken Stabler, but he'd have still shown that he doesn't have a common sense brain cell left comparing any Raider QB to Elway. You blew it in 83 Al.

I agree with Slap, Davis wanted John so bad he could taste it...the Raiders were the only team who ponied up ALL the draft picks Accorsi wanted. The Chargers were close too, but wouldn't give up a pick to keep Fouts (I think) the Cowboys were close! But they kept a somewhat well known Dallas defensive lineman. There's a Raider site where it's said Davis thinks it was a conspiracy by Rozelle and the league to keep Elway from the raiders (I think it's called 'the Greatness that is the Raiders' article. I'll look it up). Can you imagine John on that Raider team? That's why Rozelle was shaking in his boots. Plus, Accorsi said there was a lot of pressure on him to trade John to keep him in the NFL. Revisionist history, baby. It sucks!

BTW, Howie Long is the only raider I liked. Villanova guy, and never liked playing in L.A.! Being cute doesn't hurt either...

I always thought the same thing! It looked like he needed a shoe horn to get that thing on/off.

I remember his running and throwing style was about the most awkward looking thing I've ever seen from a professional QB. Made Bernie Kosar look almost graceful in comparison.

Why did he even throw John's name out there, unless he still has that 'loss' on his mind? Too bad, Al, too bad. John was not destined to be in silver and black, no matter how you still hope.

Broncos were 13-17 '83 thru '98. I'm not sure if Elway played both games against them in the '83 losses.
