One That Slipped Away

Selecting players out of the college ranks is an imperfect science, even though the Colts are darn good at it. But they really missed the boat on one running back that ColtPower profiled during the offseason as a "Colts Hot Prospect."

"I won't stop until I'm on top."

Those were the words that Arizona running back Mike Bell said to me with conviction back in early April prior to the NFL Draft. I was the first to share with Colts fans that Bell's sole formal interview at the Combine was with Tony Dungy (click the link to read the story), so the personable and talented young man was obviously on the Colts radar.

Projected to be a mid-round pick by many prognosticators, I thought Bell would be a great pickup for the Colts. He certainly had the demeanor and character that Indianapolis looks for. And his work ethic was unquestionable. Even if the Colts used a top pick on a running back, I figured Bell would be a steal in the fifth or sixth round.

But not only did the Colts let Mike Bell slip off the charts, inexplicably, so did 31 other teams. The draft ended and Bell didn't have a place to hang his hat.
That was hard for me to swallow, because all it took was one conversation with Bell to know that this was a player with heart. His words didn't sound canned, coached or shallow. He spoke as though every word came from his soul. The sincerity with the confidence to back every word came through loud and clear.

So how did the Colts, a team that may have a great rookie back of their own in Joseph Addai, but who could lose Dominic Rhodes at the end of the 2006 season miss that?

The Broncos won the undrafted free agent derby for Bell's services. And today, there were undoubtedly a whole bunch of NFL scouts who made themselves a bit scarce, especially if they told their teams that Bell wasn't worthy of being drafted.

The Denver Broncos announced that undrafted rookie free agent Mike Bell would now be working with their first team and would be their starter in their preseason opener. And it's not due to anyone else on their roster being injured. After offseason workouts and just nine days of training camp, head coach Mike Shanahan is officially on the Mike Bell bandwagon.

"It could change day-by-day and week-by-week, but we felt that Mike deserves a chance to work with the first team," said Shanahan.

For Bell, the news was both a pleasant surprise and an affirmation of what he knew all along that he could accomplish for the NFL team that gave him the chance.

"On draft day, I felt like totally quitting football but this time I feel like I am on cloud nine," Bell said. "This is a great feeling, but I've got to stay hungry."

Even if Joseph Addai becomes the great back of the future for the Colts, if fans watch Mike Bell emerge as a force in this league, it will be hard not to regret the one-two punch that Addai and Bell could have provided on the depth chart for Indianapolis for years to come. And in NFL terms, in exchange for Bell's bargain-basement contract to boot. He has a three-year deal that pays him a salary of $275,000 and ramps up to just $445,00 in 2008.

Bottom line, it appears the Broncos got one of the great steals of the 2005 draft class. And Colts fans might be left wondering how this one got away after the Colts had positioned themselves as his primary suitor following the Combine.

Actually, Bell and Addai are very similar in style. I really thought the colts would go after Addai because he was the complete package, especially in blocking the blitz and receiving. Now that I have seen Bell up close, the investment the Broncos had to use versus the Colts first round pick is a complete steal. There really should be some scouts who lose their Jobs over missing Bell.

Well we missed on him too.

We were not even the first to call after the draft M. Bell had to tell teams "No thanks I'm waiting for the Broncos to call".

Pumped to see Bell here and a great story to see him just practicing w/the first team in his first season.

If Bell becomes the feature back for Denver....then we can throw out the mandatory 4 year wait time to assess this past draft/UDFA.

This will go down as the most productive draft/UDFA in Denver Bronco history.

Well, we certainly did not draft him, but he was in constant contact with Bobby Turner and Knew the Broncos were more than just interested in getting him. Does that absolve the scouts of their evaluations though? Nah!

Zing!!

If nothing changes, we are going to have an undrafted rookie and an undrafted Fullback starting on opening day, and for a SUPER BOWL CONTENDER. I wonder if that has EVER happened in the modern era.

We were as guilty as anyone, we were apparently just lucky that Mike is a lifetime Bronco fan. He would of been 3 or 4 the first of the 80's superbowls. I wonder if he even vaguely remembers the first two. He has said "ever since he can remember" so it sounds like it might go back to the second dynasty.

Denver has some fresh offensive talent coming online very soon. If I had to guess, looks like Mike, Blade, Superman, Scheff, Kuper all have looked great. I think we will put Eslinger on the PS then Europe like Hamilton and Hixon can sneak onto IR with that slow heeling heel. Walker says he's 80%...If he's this good at 80, it's drooling stuff. Same thiing with Blade...if he's not polished yet, the sky's the limit because he looks pretty damn good to me. I guess SuperMan is a beast too a little rough around the edges, and then Mike Bell, who obviously has to have some rough edges. If he holds the starting tailback spot, I'm not sure I want him returning kicks. This was ANOTHER surprise, for him to, for NOW, be penciled in as the KR. That just shows how much he has impressed. We can move Marshall inside in a pinch then slot him out drawing a safety or LB. That might work great. Let them see two TE then slot Superman. I might work like a dream. If the OLB in a 3-4 doesn't rush inside, they he still takes off with a LB covering a faux TE. I think it was Champ that said that he couldn't believe Marshall wasn't a first rounder. Who better to judge? Coaches aren't going to say that. When F.R.E.D. isn't obstrucing views, our intelligence reports that Marshall simply overmatches corners physically. If he proves a little slow later, he can be moved to TE. I also like the idea of Keeping Mean Mr. Mustard as House's replacement. I know, it's blasphemy, but I get the distinct feeling that House has been allowed to get his due and continue his recovery. We get Mustard down to 265 he will gain a little speed. I guess he's a vicious blocker. Hard to say if he will make it, but the odds seem to be improving. Webster also appears to be another solid backup MLB. I gave up on predicting when Burns would be sent packing, but he's like a dog...he came back from Forida by scent or something.

This was a fantastic draft day IMO. If we have just another draft like the last two, especially the fresh one, Denver could literally be a dynasty again. Our problem is obviously at DL, but it's hard to complain about the second best rush D in the NFL. Maybe Dumervil can overachieve. I'm leery tho. We will also need someone to replace Lynch soon. The guy is amazing with his instincts and conditioning.

Yes, it's a homer post, but the future looks so bright, let's put on the orange shades! 3 more days. Damn, I won't see the game. I hope Taco gets the chat link up.

All this hype and the kid hasn't taken his first carry in the NFL.

I hope the kid gets it done, but man, I'll have to see it to believe it.

And now for some sun-rises-in-the-East type news: The Denver Broncos have discovered another starting running back. For the moment, the undrafted Mike Bell has climbed from fourth-string to No. 1 on the Denver depth chart, bypassing the likes of former second-round pick Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne, a Giants first-rounder in '01. If Broncos running backs were stock, Warren Buffett would have been buying them a long time ago.

really really heartbreaking to see the colts have something not go their way, maybe the league should step in and reassign MB to Indy, then again, never mind, he isn't a receiver so Pay-me-a-ton wouldn't want him anyway

Bill Plaschke on around the horn just said he thought Mike Bell was the best running back not named Reggie Bush!! This has become quite the hot topic.
