RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Here are five observations about the Chiefs based on their Aug. 4 scrimmage against the Vikings:
1.
All the magazine covers, the fantasy football ads, the 2,000-yard talk, the MVP predictions -- budding star Larry Johnson has to feel like there's a big bull's-eye on his back, right? Actually, it's just the opposite. He's out to inflict more punishment on those who dare tackle him.
"Everybody is going to be gunning for me. It's like a trophy for some people to see if they can keep me under 100 yards," he says.
Realizing there are doubts about his ability to compete at last year's level over a full season, Johnson committed himself this offseason like never before. He took the offseason more seriously because for the first time, he's going into the season as The Guy. Rather than retreat to a fancy desert training facility, Johnson spent three hours a day at the Chiefs complex with one of the team's trainers. Get this: He says he feels faster and stronger.
"My goal is to stay consistent," he says. "Be put in that elite category of those elite backs and do it over 16 games."
Head coach Herman Edwards is already doing his part to make that happen by managing Johnson's practice schedule, including holding him out of the Vikings scrimmage. The addition of a quality backup in Michael Bennett will allow the Chiefs to rest Johnson at the end of wins that are in the bag rather than keep him on the field as they did last year. Johnson has worked to break his habit of always carrying the ball in his right hand. He's also tried to improve his technique in pass protection. Even with the turnover at the tackle spots, don't expect a disappointing follow-up season.
2.
The Chiefs have issues at the tackle spots, both at offensive left and right tackle and at the defensive tackle spots. Right tackle John Welbourn, according to a league source, retired earlier this offseason rather than face a six-game suspension for violating the league's steroid policy. Future Hall of Fame left tackle Willie Roaf abruptly retired before camp; the Chiefs are still holding out hope that he will eventually change his mind.
Former All-Pro Kyle Turley, who's been out the past two seasons battling back problems, was supposed to compete for the starting right tackle spot. Now it looks like he'll start at left tackle. The good news is he's an athletic veteran who knows what it takes to get the job done. He's not Roaf (who is?) but that spot shouldn't be a weakness. Turley seems to be in great shape, although at his current weight of 270 pounds, he looks more like a tight end than a left tackle. He needs to get up to about 280, 285. He'll probably never get back to his listed weight of 300.
Right tackle is a little shakier. Third-year man Kevin Sampson and Jordan Black, who started 10 games (six at left in place of Roaf, four at right) are battling for the position. Regardless of who wins the right tackle job, the key is keeping veteran guards Will Shields and Brian Waters, who is dealing with a foot injury, and center Casey Wiegmann healthy. The Chiefs will try to protect the ageless Trent Green by making the play-action game a bigger part of the offense.
The starters on the interior of the defensive line might be the only real area of concern on that side. Ryan Sims has yet to live up being the sixth overall pick of the draft. Next to him the Chiefs have Ron Edwards, a free agent from Buffalo.
Herm Edwards and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham can't stop raving about the defensive staff they've assembled, including defensive line coach Tim Krumrie, the former standout lineman for the Bengals. Maybe he'll make a difference.
3.
File these names away: Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Paige. Pollard is the Chiefs' second-round pick out of Purdue; Kansas City took Paige, out of UCLA, in the seventh round.
Chiefs coaches can't stop talking about the great instincts of these two young safeties. Cunningham loves how these rookies don't make the same mistake twice. Paige (6 feet, 225 pounds) is impressing at a rate of a play per day. He always seems to find the ball. He's your classic ball-hawking free safety. Pollard, on the other hand, if given a choice between the ball and the receiver, will go after the latter. He's a 6-foot-1, 224-pound enforcer. They have a chance to play together in the back end for many years. Despite their youth, they do a good job of positioning themselves to make tackles.
Chiefs people don't think it's a coincidence that starting free safety Greg Wesley happens to be having a great camp, too. At the very least, Paige and Pollard should make significant contributions on special teams if they don't command playing time in the regular defense.
4.
The Chiefs were locked in on Penn State's Tamba Hali long before the draft and it's easy to understand why. Hali is a high-energy, effort player with great closing speed who is faster in pads than he is in workouts. Cunningham compares him to former Chief and Charger Leslie O'Neal in that way.
You won't ever hear about Hali taking plays off; the other day he practiced so hard he needed two IVs -- then practiced the next day against Minnesota. He showed off a nice inside spin move against a helpless Vikings lineman in one-on-one pass-rush drills. Hali will make a lot of plays in the second half when his opponents are tiring. He's the kind of guy who could quietly amass double-digit sacks by the end of the season.
"He'll play as fast in the fourth quarter as he does in the first," Edwards says.
5.
With all the attention that is sure to be paid to Johnson, the wide receivers have to make plays on the outside. Can 33-year-old Eddie Kennison keep it up? Can third-year man Samie Parker be a viable second option? And can the Chiefs figure out a way to get Dante Hall the ball in space, where he is most dangerous?
Without serious threats on the outside, teams can simply man-up and bring safeties closer to the line of scrimmage to stop Johnson. The receivers have to keep defenses honest.

Bob, we really don't care! You got freakin Kyle Turley replacing a to-be HOF, a RB that thinks he's going to get 2000 yards, a WR that's bitching, a D that still CAN'T tackle(w/2 washed up corners I think), and a QB that's going to wish that he retired right after Roaf did(if Willie stays retired).

River Falls, Wisconsin - After the workout at family fun night, I drove back to the hotel and tried to think of the one player on defense that has made the biggest impression. It didn’t take long, and when they came to mind I laughed, becoming very scared for some of the Chiefs 2006 opponents.
As I drove a little longer, I became downright frightened. After witnessing Bernard ‘Bonecrusher’ Pollard execute a perfect blitz last night, shooting between the guard and tackle untouched, it dawned on me that he’s the real deal.
On the other end of the blitz was Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard. If Bonecrusher had made contact with Huard, he’d had to have been flown to a hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota after being knocked out.
As that play unfolded, I closed my eyes. In my mind’s eye, I saw Bonecrusher hitting Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer or the Bengals Carson Palmer. I then imagined the look on Pollard’s face as he stands over them, each quarterback wondering who threw that right hook.
It reminded me of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston after he knocked him to the canvas in the first round of their legendary 1964 fight. For Ali, Liston was no slouch. But that classic look, with Ali standing over Liston as he lay motionless on his stomach, was priceless. It also changed the face of boxing forever, as that night a star was born.
Back to the present, with my eyes still closed, I grinned. That night, just as Pollard will do, Ali delivered a knockout blow, transforming Liston from upright god to canvas immortal. Liston would never be the same in the boxing ring ever again.
When I finally opened my eyes, I laughed out loud. And I said to myself, “I’m glad Bernard Pollard is playing for the Chiefs.” Quarterbacks who get hit by Pollard this season will feel it into the following Sunday. Some might feel it for weeks or months.
Pollard’s hitting ability has been on display the entire training camp. After Friday night’s scrimmage in Mankato, Warpaint Illustrated Beat Writer Mike Nugent mentioned in his daily blog that, ‘Pollard would have killed people’ if he hadn’t held back. It wasn’t far from the truth. In fact, it was dead on accurate.
During the Chiefs’ glory days, they always had active safeties, players that could deliver a hit. Players like Lloyd Burruss and Deron Cherry were ferocious hitters. Burress loved to drop his shoulder and level running backs that found their way into the secondary. Cherry met them head on. Nobody will ever forget the pop that Deron Cherry laid on Bo Jackson during the 1987 season.
Pollard might end up being better than both of them. His hits will be stuff of legend. It’ll only take one hit during a regular season game at Arrowhead, and the Chiefs will have to install a hit meter on the scoreboard. My guess is that they’ll need to make it bigger after he racks up 10, because as he grows in this defense and he gains confidence, that number will skyrocket.
In training camp, Pollard and fellow rookie safety Jarrad Page (who I might add is making a name for himself) are getting over 50 percent of the defensive snaps together. That means both will get playing time, even if Pollard is ahead of his fellow UCLA safety at this point.
What Pollard brings to this defense other than his hitting ability is speed. He can drop back in coverage with the best the team has, and he can blitz in a gear I’ve never seen from a safety.
On draft day, the folks who run the NFL Draft Show at ESPN said that Pollard was a reach in the second round. So far, it looks like they’re completely wrong.
Next Saturday, Pollard and the rest of his teammates will head down to Houston to take on the Texans in their first exhibition game. Starting safeties Greg Wesley and Sammy Knight will play a few defensive series, and then Pollard will get his chance. It might take him a play or two to get his feet wet, but after months of OTAs, mini-camps and training camp practices, it shouldn’t take long for Pollard to hit someone.
And when that happens, I’ll close my eyes and smile some more.

I saw Pollard play a lot at Purdue unfortunately. The dude is very athletic, but really poor in play diagnosis and discipline. As for the big Hits, I never saw them at Purdue. I did see him get out of position on PA and Bootlegs however and lose responsibility containment. Perfect Chiefs safety I guess ;D

It's an NFL topic, but DAMN BOOB...we don't care about the Chiefs till we play them. You give daily reports that push good threads off the page. Bob...we DON'T CARE. Tell us how impressive Q has been! Your going to be surprised how easy it is to bottle up Bennett and easy to tackle unless he gets clear, and he's not young anymore and has been injured. He's alot like an older Tatum Bell honestly. You got alot riding on Diaper Boy.
Anyway, try to limit the Chef posts. I don't know why you are cut slack, and it's none of my business. Just try to limit things to things like Denver vs. KC. that are even slightly related to the Broncos.

It will be hard for LJ to "break him off some 2k this year" if Sperm is pulling him out of games. Funny thing is that they need to get up big 1st!
2nd issue I have with this post is that they are holding LJ out of the Viking scrimmage when they have 2 new starting tackles. I would at least put him in for a series or 2. He will need to learn how to run behind a new line right? Herm is going to do the same thing to LJ that he did to Martin. Ruin a great backs career & kill his rythm in big games by spelling him at wrong times. I love Headwards! His plan worked so well in NY he is going to destroy the only wepon the Ceefs have! LOL

If he has to close his eyes and imagine, I doubt hard video would convince him. He sees such classic illegal tackles as "forearm shiver to the face"..."Head on" and I think Pollard took down two QB's in one play. It sounds more like a wet dream than any semblance of reality.

Well I personally don't mind getting updates about the chiefs because like it or not they could be our toughest competition for the division this year. You can't dismiss what Johnson did last year that was almost unhuman. On the other hand I fail to see those speedy wide receivers. Most teams proved that you can go one on one with chiefs receivers, double Gonzales effectively limiting his production and a running game was all the chiefs had making them pretty much one demensional on offense and their defense still has to prove themselves to be markedly improved. Bob you have every right to be as excited about your chiefs as we are about our Broncos, but bottom line was we were a step away from making the superbowl and you guys were a step away from just making the playoffs.

Geez bob...it was a SCRIMMAGE against the VIKINGS??? We should care why? You should be required to put the fact that you are posting an update on Chiefs practices...not to get people so excited.

Hilarious! This guy is unreal. I don't even think Bob is capable of this level of homerism. I don't know what's funnier: His completely self-interested style descriping his orgasmic dream sequence, or that he is favorably comparing Pollard to Muhamed Ali. His entire article is about a fantasy in his head for crying out loud. What a complete joke.

And when the Chheefs don't make the playoffs he will close his eyes & pretend they had an "Awesome Season", polish his turd of a team in his minds eye, & dream of the Cheefs going to the SB for 1st time in 35 years.
& Bronco fans everywhere will "Smile some more".
