View Full Version : Khan's Camp report 8/7 AM

Ok well you've already heard the news, but I'll break down all the roster moves I saw.
Obviously Warren wasn't there today. Rod and Javon didn't practice. Rod was on the field but I didn't see Javon. He might be rehabbing or something.
Defense: Nothing new. Dumervil still on the second team, but is part of the rotation as is other guys
Offense:
RB:Mike Bell is first team, Tatum spilts with first and second and Dayne played exclusively on the second team. Cobbs is third. Kyle Johnson is first string again, Powers-Neal got some work on the third team.
QB's: Jake is first team, Cutler is second team, BVP third and Parsons fourth.
WR: Rod, Javon, Marshall, Watts, Terrell, Kircus, Devoe, Clark, Adams. (The last four might wrong because they rotated them in and out a lot even in move the ball drills but I'm pretty sure the first half of that list is right.)
TE's: Alexander, Scheffler, Mustard, Leach, Jackson. Alexander and Mustard were the plow-horse package and Shefter and Jackson were the passing package. Mustard, Scheffler, and Alexander all got work on the first team.
There wasn't a whole lot different than prior reports in terms of how they're playing so I'll try and break down things that were different. Gotta say that the entire team looked a little sluggish today. Coming off the day off and whatnot probably wasn't the most exciting thing going on. Anyway let's get started with wideouts.
Marshall: He made some nice plays. He's working on the first team, which is a good sign. He wasn't standing out as much but hung in on the first team.
Watts: He had a good day, made some nice catches and even got bumped a little bit and hung on. I think he did have one drop, though.
Devoe: He caught a great lazer pass from Cutler on what looked like a post pattern. He was moving his arms around more freely and I the trainers talking to him and making him swing his arm around. Looks like he's feeling much better.
Kircus: He's fun to watch. A real speedster and his flexibility and elusiveness really help him make some cool catches. Good day today.
Clark: I think he plays very well. He'll probably be a practice squad guy but there is a lot of potential in him. He just needs some experience.
Tight ends:
Mustard: He blocks like a man beast. He's really an excellent blocker and if they ever convert him to tackle, he'd be a great fit in our system ala- Matt Lepsis.
Scheffler: He has really improved in his run blocking. His pass blocking is coming more slowly but he is drawing high praise from Brewster. He sealed of the edge on one run and Brewster was really getting excited about it. Pass blocking - needs quite a bit of work.
Nate Jackson: Made some nice grabs and showed ability to get sepperation. The only bad thing I saw him do was Brewster was in his ear all morning for blocking and not puting his face into the block.
Running Backs
Mike Bell: Made some great cuts and still the best fit for our system. Shows some ability to stay balanced after contact. The contact was minimal today, but he still cuts back and reads the hole the best. What amazes me is his ability to run lateral with the line and when the hole opens and cuts back into it, there is so much burst through the hole. It's hard when think of the physics of it because you have to stop momentum and generate enough burst going the other way to get through the hole.
Tatum: He's doing better. Little steps and still has that home run capability. When there is wall to move though, he's not going to move it. He doesn't have the driving power that Mike Bell or our fullbacks have.
Next is QB's.

Jake: He is the same as he was. No change. Had a couple guys deep and couldn't hit them. He completed on throw to the corner down field that probably would have been picked off or blown up the receiver had Hamzah Abduallh played it right. Deep cover two and the safety just missed. Scarry play.
Jay: Had some struggles on third down today but had some throws where he opened it up a bit. He's really starting to take some shots down field. He had a guy (think it was Terrell) deep down the sideline but over-threw him. His natural accuracy is probably the best of the current QB's.
BVP: He actually played like a man losing his job. Made some great throws in the redzone and gave a terrific effort overall. He's really trying and I saw him talking to Heimerdinger in between reps. You can't fault the kid's heart.
Parsons: I think he's great...for a back up. Doesn't make a lot of bad throws and manages the game well.
Defense:
I didn't get a great look, so I'll just keep it kind of brief.
Preasure was good today. They had some sacks. DJ had one on a blitz. It's getting more and more difficult to block him and it's never bad seeing that. The D-line was "ok" but not great. I still don't think we're going to scare anybody with out front four alone.
Secondary: They played so-so. There were a lot of completions and no interceptions (that I saw). Fox got beat by Kircus when Kircus just outjumped him for a ball. Other than that, pretty solid.
General things: They fumble drills today. Offense practiced recovering and and covering up the ball and defens practiced forcing fumbles and tip dirlls. It was cool because I've never seen them do that too much.
I'm excited to see how things play out this week, but it looks like Shanny saw a lot of what we did.
I got back to work this week so my reports will be more occational from here on out.

any word on Hixon? he seemed to be the guy that was going to fill the one-dimensional routes of Lelie and return kicks, but he has yet to see the field and it seems Clark is showing great ability in that regard - seems we would only keep one . . . .

I saw him in sweats on the sidelines. He's out for awhile and you should just assume he isn't playing unless someone reports otherwise. I guess he's out for at least a month.

They will likely IR him or maybe PS if he comes around before preseason is over so he can learn by playing the role of the opposing teams during the season.

His is what you need to do Kaylore...Little mike got a love Cartier love bracelet with what he said was his birthday. I don't think the family is in want, but listen to this...Little Mike's wife says that they have a "matching bracelet" in full platinum. That isn't baiting, it's extortion.
OK Kaylore...Should Little mile Man Up and not give the bracelet that will cost twice the amount? Or take BoB Golic's advice that he has no choice?
I know this is borderline offtopic...but should he Man Up or bend over and buy the Bracelette. Your the Jewelry expert....

Two questions:
First, I re-watched the highlight video on Mike Bell that Yahoo has. I noticed a couple things. First, he doesn't look fast on tape. Second, he didn't break a single long scoring run in the highlights. How would you rate his open field speed? Is he a homerun threat? Or, more of a 5-15 yard guy?
Second, what do you think of this quote from the Denver Post in relation to what you have seen:
At least for the first 10 days of training camp, Jake Plummer has been almost an afterthought.
"That's what happens when you have a first-round pick in camp," Shanahan said. "But Jake hasn't been under the radar for us....He's been great." In one of the most overshadowed stories in camp, Plummer has been outstanding thus far. Plummer, 31, has looked sharp in nearly every practice as he heads into his fourth season with the Broncos.

1. He's faster and much much quicker than Mike Anderson. That's not saying a ton, but he's more than fast enough to be a decent threat. His cuting helps make people miss and that's huge.
2. Jake looking sharp? Well he isn't playing bad, but I haven't seen improved play. "Outstanding" is probably reaching. He's playing about how he did last year except he has some guys who can actually catch now. He still makes some bad throws and still can't throw the ball deep. He's going to have a season somewhere in between last year and the year before.
Comparitively, there have been days where Jay's looked just as good and I really believe Jake won't be our guy next year.

Jake was better this week than he was at the end of camp last year. That being said, he is still not consistent with his throws and reads. He threw a couple of red Zone Picks and was off on some throws he should not have been. His accuracy is hit and miss.

I went to TC today for the first time this year so Ill add my thoughts.
QBS
Jake: He looked decent to me. Seemed to play pretty safe, though with the lack of rod and javon im not suprised. I only saw him throw 2 deep balls, one of which was overthrown (better then underthrown i guess) and the other was to kircus in the endzone who made a nice catch over foxworth.
Jay: Since this was my first time seeing him, I didnt really know what to expect. I onlt knew what I have read the reports here and played pretty much exactly as described. He has a beautiful throw and really looks like he has the tools to be a great player, he just needs to get better mentaly. He almost hit Watts long along the sideline, but it was just a tad bit over thrown. Pretty much all of his other passes seemed accurate though.
Van Pelt: He looked okay. Nothing special, but definantly better then I remember him in TC last year.
RBs:
Mike Bell: Wow. Because everybody has been raving about him, I knew what to expect from him for the most part, but I was still very suprised at how well he played. His vision just seems so much superior to the other RBs. He hits the hole hard, can see the tacklers ahead of him and is pretty good at getting around them or simply running through them. He also seems to be a very hard worker and ran much harder then tatum and ron.
Tatum Bell: He looked okay. He got better and better as the morning progressed and had a nice run up the middle at the end of camp, where he really showed some of his speed.
Ron Dayne: I didnt see him get that many reps to tell you the truth, and when he did run he didnt look that great.
WRs:
Javon: I wounder if his knee is hurting or something. He was on the sidelines the entire time, except for 1 play at the beginning of they day and that was just a run play. I really hope that he is okay.
Brandon: He looked pretty good. He went down mid-day with some sort of ankle or knee inujry, but after limping around a bit he was back on the field and looked fine. He caught everything thrown his way, but he didnt do anything spectacular.
Darius Watts: I didnt see him drop any passes. He looked very good.
David Kircus: He seemed like the best WR out there today. The first pass to him of the day was over his head on the sideline and he couldnt pull it in, but after that he was very solid. He also caught a nice long ball from Plummer in the endzone.
Clark and devoe: both were pretty solid. Nothing special. Clark definantly is at least Practice squad material.
TEs: I didnt watch them too much, just remember that scheffler had a nice TD grab.
Oline: first team looked good. Second team didnt. They mostly have trouble with the pass defense.
Dline: I didnt really watch them too much. I did notice that dummerville got into the backfield a couple of times.
CBs: Nobody threw in champs direction. None of the other CBs looked that great. There were virtually no pass breakups and there were an ints.
LBs: they looked good. Gold and DJ did a good job blitzing from the outside got the qb a couple of times. Wilson Burns and Gold do a god job keeping the younger players in line by doing things like poping the ball out of their hands when they think they are safe.

Good job Prodigal... Not that I couldn't take Med, SoCal and the Great Khan's word at it, but it's nice to see another face rave about Dong Bell. I'm still waiting before I bump him on my draft board, but it's looking like I may be able to get a 10th or 11th round steal in some of my drafts! OT, but still worthy and I'm sure others have been thinking about Mike Bell in their Fantasy Drafts.

Seriously, you guys could go pro with these reports. Imagine if every training camp had a couple of guys like you writing some thorough reports and reviews that media outlets could use to get accurate info about a team instead of the same old speculative, cliche drivel from reporters who either show up for one day of camp or just make one phone call to a personel guy asking how everyone is doing. Plus, I make my friends look like bandwagoners when I bust out info on guys like Kircus and Mike Bell.

___________________
For the past 3 years I have gone up once each year to catch one day of camp. It's always an enjoyable day - today was no exception. It was a nice Colorado morning - cool to start with a warm sun that got warmer as the morning went on.
On the way up to Denver, I decided that I would focus on watching the offense as that seems to be where there are a lot of questions this year. So if you ask me questions about D players, know that if I answer, I'll simply be making up a story. I don't pretrend to be an expert (I played basketball and baseball), but here are my observations:
1. WR's - I didn't see Rod at all and Javon was on the sidelines. He came in for 1 play on 1 drill, but didn't play at all in any of the scrimages. So the starting WR's were Marshall and Watts. I thought Watts had a good, solid day. He certainly didn't hurt himself today.I didn't see any drops and he, as usual, did a good job of getting open.
Marshall was someone I watched pretty closely. He is big, as advertised. And he looks plenty fast. I thought he was solid, but did not have any spectacular, standout play. I thought he did a fairly weak job blocking on a couple occassions. One time he took on two defenders and ended up being slighly injured. It appeared to me (speculation only) that he may have bruised his kneecap against one of the defenders. He was out for about 10 minutes and then went back in and was working with the first team. Later he had a nice block in the EZ on one of the rushing plays, which I was pleased to see.
Perhaps the most impressive WR (since this was my first time to see him) was Kircus. First of all, I was under the mistaken impression that he was smaller than he is. He is a legit 6'1" or 6"2" and probably about 200. He had a spectacular long reception (probaly 50 yars or so) that received one of the loudest ovations of the day. In punt returns he was all hands, not allowing the ball to get close to his body. He ran good intermediate routes as well as the post patterns. I'm betting he sticks.
I thought DeVoe had a good day as well. He made a difficult catch on a ball Jake threw behind him and managed to stay inbounds. He also had a couple other catches, and I don't remember any drops.
2. RB's - I had no idea when I arrived that Mike Bell had been moved up to first string. But I saw that every time he was running the ball, it was behind the first team OL. I was quite surprised. But he looks good, although I would say he does n ot look as big as he is listed, 215-220. His cutting and stopping/start on a dime are impressive. I also thought he showed pretty good power getting through the line, although with no tackling that is hard to always determine.
Tatum also looked pretrty good to me. He had a couple of good catches out of the backfield. He definetly has the explosive burst we saw last year and, to me, he looked a little stronger than when I saw him at camp last year.
Dayne does not look the part of a sleek RB - but has he ever? Compared to the Bells, he looked sluggish. But I'm waiting to see how he does in preseason before writing him off.
3. TE - I mostly watched Sheffler, and was really impressed. Shef received the loudest criticism by one of the coaches when he missed Lynch on an attempted block. "You have to get to the safety and knock Lynch back! Now get your a$$ in gear!" was a pretty direct quote that brought a few chuckles from the crowd. He also received one of the biggest rounds of applause for a TD catch from a beautifully thrown ball by of all QB's- BVP? He looks like a stud with great hands and WR speed. I just may get over my disappointment of draft day when we selected him. Another one of my misses!
4. QB - not too much to say. Jake did not make any throws that brought oohs and aahs, but also didn't have left handed tosses for LGM's benefit. I'd say he played like we want him to play - rolled out a couple times and hit either a WR short or a dumpoff to a RB and didn't throw anything that looked high risk.
It was my first look at Cutler - and I'm personally pleased they moved him to 2nd string. He looks taller than Jake and certainly has the strongest arm of anyone residing in Denver other than #7. He showed that he was a rookie on one running play where he turned the wrong way and the busted play was shut down. He gets the ball out in the flat with a quick flick of the wrist, and obviously can throw both the intermediate and long ball. It's going to be fun watching his development - nothing today discouraged me.
5. OL - for me, the hardest to judge. Poor Nalen is showing his age when he walks aound the field. You sense that you can almost hear his knees creaking from 40 yards away. Foster looks to be in good shape, but I didn't ever see him get a major push on the line. I watched Chris Myers on a couple of plays, but didn't see anything great, on the other hand nothing bad.
Now aren't you gald I said anything about the OL? :D
Bottom line, I think this team is ready to hit someone else and get a sense of where they are. I'm looking forward to this week's game where we will get a chance to see a lot of the young players we have heard a lot about. For me, it was simply an enjoyable morning.

In regards to Mike Bell it was no different. Depth chart movement is part of the game. They looked a little reluctant and sluggish besides that. I think some weren't to happy to come back to work.

Look at the way TD holds the ball. If a defender hits the ball, he won't fumble because his bicep's has the back point tucked away. If someone hit Portis in the hand, he's going to fumble. TD also puts his body between the ball and the LOS.
