I truly believe that the 2005 draft is what made this draft possible. How long have we spent tons of resources trying to have a good CB tandem? Dwill and Nique emerging let us go out and restock the offense, but it funny to look back at what was said about the 2005 draft:
Denver Broncos, D+.
--They moved out of the first round and obtained a third rounder next year. With their first pick, they took CB Darrent Williams, who I am very high on. After that though, things get shaky. I believe Paymah was a reach, and they ended Day One selecting RB Maurice Clarett. While it doesn't look that great right now, Clarett's talent could make this draft one of the best in a few years.
Keep an eye on: Maurice Clarett, RB, Ex-Ohio St.
Bwahahaha
Broncos Grade: D
Needs: WR, DB, QB, OL, DL
Denver's grade would be much worse if not for landing a #1 pick in next year's draft. They received fairly poor value with most of their day one picks. Their top 2 picks CB Williams (2nd round), DB Paymah (3rd round), and Clarett (3rd round). Williams has potential and athletic ability, but he's not seen as the total package. CB Foxworth was considered good value in the 3rd round, but drafting 3 corners shows that they don't have a ton of faith in any one of them. This speaks to their thoughts of quality by quantity. As for Clarett, well they took him WAY too early. I hand it to Denver though, because the kid showed a lot of talent at Ohio State and we all know that Denver is the best possible situation for him. If he gets back into football shape and stays out of trouble he could work out despite being drafted WAY too early.
Round, Name, Pos, School
2 Darrent Williams CB OKLAHOMA STATE
3 Karl Paymah CB WASHINGTON STATE
3 Domonique Foxworth CB MARYLAND
3 Maurice Clarett RB OHIO STATE
6 Chris Myers OG MIAMI (FLA.)
7 Paul Ernster K NORTHERN ARIZONA
Overall Draft Grade:
C+
The Broncos pulled off a shocker by drafting Maurice Clarett with the last pick of the first day. We can't think of a better team for Clarett to on. Many people think that they drafted Clarett too early, but Clarett was probably going to be drafted in the fourth round, so if the Broncos wanted Clarett they had to draft him when they did. The Broncos drafted three cornerbacks. At least one of them will be a starter next year. Chris Myers was a great pick on the second day of the draft.
Denver Broncos
The Broncos previously traded out of the first round with the Washington Redskins. The Broncos made a run on smaller, speedy Corners by grabbing Darrent Williams, Karl Paymah, and Dominique Foxworth. All of those picks were odd, who is going to match up against the big WR's in Oakland? OG Chris Meyers is the typical Broncos kind of linemen, low risk, high reward potential. K Paul Ernester is Practice Squad fodder. Oh yeah, and the Broncos drafted Maurice Clarett.
Potential Starters: 1. One of the Corners they grabbed could start if Lenny Walls continues to have injury troubles, but which one? The best guess would be Darrent Williams.
Draft Grade: C-. The Broncos took a big risk on Clarett because while he his talented, he does have concerns with his character. All of the Corners drafted were thought be reaches also. This is a very low impact draft for them.
Denver: D
All that kept the Broncos from failing was a shrewd pre-draft trade. Completely ignored character and reached to draft better athletes than football players in Karl Paymah and Domonique Foxworth
Denver C
Based on the selections alone, this grade would be worse. But the fact the Broncos robbed Washington in a pre-draft trade for the 25th overall pick helped Denver earn a passing mark. As for the players, Denver reached a bit in taking CBs Darrent Williams (second round), Karl Paymah (third) and Domonique Foxworth (third). And if it were anyone other than Mike Shanahan taking troubled RB Maurice Clarett in the third round, we'd say they were nuts.
Denver - I don't know what the Broncos were thinking, except for picking Maurice Clarett of course. I mean, if anybody else had picked him on the first day I would be reaming them a new one, but since it was Shanahan, I'd have to say the got a steal in Clarett, maybe I'll be the only one who says that, and he'll be great, because he's playing in Denver, and I'll look brilliant! Before that they picked a corner, and a corner, and, oh, another corner. They lost Herndon, but did they need three on day 1? I like Paymah, and Williams is a good player too. Foxworth was a big part of a stingy defense in Maryland. But all three? They needed more than corner today. First day grade: C-
