Yes, well obviously both sides are trapped in a cycle of violence.
Therefore, the US should use its influence to intervene along with the UN and stop the killing and resolve the conflict. That is exactly what the world wants done, and has been trying to do, however Bush, Blair and Rice have blocked a cease fire, giving Israel a license to continue the destruction of Lebanon.
This is exactly the pattern of the last 30 years, where the US has used its veto at the UN Security Council -- more than 40 times -- to block the UN and prevent it from stopping the violence.
No wonder the world now hates us. No wonder 70% of the people in the world think the US and Israel are the greatest threats to peace.

The US knows that Hizbullah will not cease in it's attempt to destroy Israel through terror attacks, so they give Israel room to protect itself. Simple, really. Hizbullah also sees us as a terror target, so it is obviously in the US' interest to allow Israel to continue. Simple. Lebanon has a growing democracy outside of Hizbullah, and the elimination of Hizbullah would realistically, theoretically allow for that democracy to become more secularized. Democracy brings bargaining and stability between people groups. Simple. No need to make things complicated with overemotionalized flailing about why Israel's use of force in response to terrorism doesnt fit a particular sugary ethic. Sometimes the man who learned to use his resources to spend money on martial arts training has to unleash a viscious blow to defend himself from robbers.
No need to overcomplicate the issue.
Israel is protecting its sovereignty. If you disagree with Israel's right to its sovereignty, then you are discussing a different issue entirely, and one that should not be lumped together in the discussion of whether or not Israel has a right to protect its borders because their sovereignty is established and recognized by the world community. A sovereign nation can protect itself from attack.

Yeah, the UN did such a great job of preventing violence in Somalia, Rwanda, Iraq (pre US liberation), Kosovo, again in Somalia. Heck, they can't even keep their own blue helmeted thugs from raping 14 year old girls in Africa and you want them to "keep the peace" in Lebanon? The UN couldn't even do it during the Lebanese civil war in the 80's when Hezbollah was just starting!
Without the US financial support of the UN that world body is just another anti-semitic group minus the swastika arm bands or white sheets!

Even more ridiculous was the UN had like 2,000 "peacekeepers" I suppose is what you'd call them, down in south Lebanon while Hezbollah was accumulating all that weaponry and they stood around and did nothing and didn't even report what was going on either. The UN has shown to be a joke time and time again. There are never any consequences except "more sanctions" which are ignored as much as the previous ones. And other countries, like the oil for food scam, participate in violations and nothing is done. Why should any country worry what the UN Ays or does? I'm sure Hezbollah is shaking in their shoes wondering what Annan will do, which is nothing. Actually, the anti-semite Annan always finds more fault with Israel than anything. He, like most of Europe, seem to believe Israel needs to take being attacked and like it.

The 2,000 UN troops in south Lebanon are merely observors. They are not armed and have no mandate to keep the peace.
The UN could work if it were given a chance. It only takes one veto in the Security Council to block action. In most cases it's the US veto that does it. The US has used its veto many many more times than any other state.
So if you don't like the UN you can blame the US. We are responsible.

What about in times when the U.S. does not veto sanctions and the sanctions don't work? Whose fault is that? ... The U.N.'s. The U.N. has overseen the accumulation of weapons in southern Lebanon and done absolutely nothing to stop it. Seeing U.N. and Hezbollah flags flying side by side in southern Lebanon makes one wonder if the U.N. is choosing sides. I don't believe they are but allowing Hezoballah and U.N. flags to fly within feet of each other certainly raises eyebrows.

But Mark:
The typical Bush supporter only believes in the authority or the efficacy of the U.N. when he's using it to justify Smirky McFlightsuit's illegal invasion of Iraq.

Soooo, what purpose did they serve? How much money did the UN spend to have a bunch of monitors sit and "watch". Not armed and no mandate to keep the peace, well hell's bell's louise put the children to sleep the UN is here!!

Of course we are. In your convuluted world the US is the source of all evil in the world.
The US is not the source of evil, but we are the Superpower and thus have an enormous influence far beyond our shores. The problem is we have not used our power wisely. We have followed the lead of every other emperial power in history, from Babylon to Rome to Britain.
Every one of them screwed up the world, and we have vastly more power for destruction than all of them put together. We're thus the most dangerous nation this planet has ever known.
We have a prez who hears voices from heaven and who brandishes nuclear first use as if it were a divine right. We are also pursuing the biggest expansion of our nuclear force structure since the Cold War. Yet, Bush has the audacity to preach nuclear disarmament to other states. Total hypocisy.
It's also clear that from the moment he entered office this prez began a push for a nuclear first strike capability against China and Russia, and according to a recent article in Foreign Affairs we are nearly there -- now in a fuzzy gray zone where it's uncertain if Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is in force any longer.
We are thus in the most dangerous moment of human history -- and if the American people don't wake up pretty damn quick to their (our) peril (and the world's peril) it will all be over but the whimpering... MG

Well, well well....looks like the Dems have found another canidate for DNC chairman.
This post here is why people like you are labelled as anti-American.
We get it....you're anti-Semitic, and hate America. The good news is, a clown like you boiling over with seething hatred for this nation and the Jewish people is still free to say these spiteful things in a nation you claim is the greatest threat to peace in the world. I wonder however if you could say such nasty things about 70% of the world inside their borders and not get jailed, or executed? go to cuba and talk ****. Go to Iran and speak out against their regime. Go to Damascus and parade around with a sign that says Syria is the greatest threat to world peace.
Our nation isn't perfect. But it's the beacon of freedom throughout the world. We have clothed, fed, and protected 90% of the world...and continue to do so to this freaking day.
And if 70% of the world thinks we're the greatest threat to peace, then why are so many of their people dying in order to get here?

You are not hearing me. Why? Have I not explained myself clearly -- or is it because you are dense between the ears?
You have swallowed the lie that criticism of Israel is the same as anti semitism. That may have become the realpolitik of America. But it's still a lie. A fiction.
It is not about Jews. The issue is the racial apartheid policy of the state of Israel.
You are an NFL fan. You should know better. We all agree there is no place for racism in our football nor in our society. In this respect the NFL is a model for every other insitution in America. Football is about talent, skill and leadership -- and the color of a man's skin or his ethnic origin is irrelevant.
But this is not true in Israel, which practices a form of racial apartheid much worse than anything that existed in South Africa. And you are a chump who has swallowed the big lie that it isn't happening. Well it is happening and by backing Israel's brutality we in America have placed ourselves on the wrong side of history. This is probably the most serious problem our nation has ever faced -- given our vast destructive power.
