View Full Version : Is miss the days when Denver acutally had a "beat" writer...

Maybe we were just spoiled when Adam Scheffter reported on the Broncos as the beat writer. But with Burger Bill running the show at the Post, It seems John Clayton knows more about what is going on in Denver than Bill or anyone else locally. Honestly, how does Bill sleep at night, after bringing home a pay-check with the mediocre work he does.

I am sure there are numerous potential trades, interested teams with the A.L. fiasco that could us a little insight on the Broncos mentality going forward. Also, maybe a weekly Q/A could start back up. Anyway, just felt like venting that...

I'd rather read Armstrong's stuff, than Bill's to be honest w/ya.

Burger Bill can't last...can he? I miss Adam Schefter, too. He was often way ahead of the pack in his reports and rumors. I can only guess he is missed by the Broncos organization too, as they seem to have trusted him with an inside track.

I have a hard time believing why the DP would retain Williamson after the crap he put out last year and during the offseason. His level of quality/production is so obviously substandard to Schefters, you'd think they would have noticed the dropoff by now. There are probably 50 posters on this board as we speak that would bring more passion and material as a beat writer for the DP right now without any formal training.

I think it's one of those lessons you learn early in life: you never know how good you've got it until it's gone. Schefter was obviously very talented and passionate about his job. And because of this he was the Prez of the Pro Football Writers Assoc. for several years running. Maybe Burger Bill is what most other cities and their fans have come to expect, but he simply isn't cutting it compared to Schefter.

It is fairly obvious that he is simply going through the motions. There's probably THOUSANDS of writers who would jump on that job in a heartbeat. Maybe I should sent this to the editor. He used to be my next door neighbor when I was growing up in Denver...

Jeeze, I think the same thing every time I open the Denver Post. What does Bill do anyway...is he even at training camp? Or does he just read the Mane like the rest of us....

Yeah I agree, we were def. spoiled, all we are asking for is the guy to put in some effort. It is pretty disappointed to read his material, and it is a day old a dollar short. Let's get Khan and Socal writing for the Post, they give more effort, and insight. Speaking of which, do you guys see Burger bill or Armstrong reporting???

i say khan, socal, and/or med12 apply for the job. i think you have the support of all of us. if the newspaper is smart, they will realize that the passionate fans like us are the ones that they need on their sides because the casual fan isnt going to notice the difference and/or care enough to complain.

Armstrong is no longer the Broncos beat writer, hasn't been for years. Armstrong is off doing his annual training camp tour. Klis is doing the beat writing IMO.

Burger Bill is awful.

Haha. I'm so glad I found this thread. I just got blasted on the Mania board yesterday because I said that I trusted the training camp reports of Kaylore and Socal more than I do the Denver Post. Someone said that "I was a fool if I think the amateur reports here are better than Bill Williamson."

I puked all over the screen when I read that. BW is HORRIBLE. I want Shefter back...

I don't read the paper anymore.
The Mane has better info then the paper. khan and socal's reports are better then any thing the paper has.
$hit, the speculation on trades/transactions is as good here as it is in the paper or ESPN for that matter.

Burger Bill gets great access to the team, I don't know why he can't put out a better product. He has been there everyday and after the general press session, he gets special treatment from Shanahan (as does Legwold). They stand right next to the door, the three of them and he answers their questions. He has no excuses. He really needs to provide a better product.

When these guys strat getting "special treatment" they tend to lose the edge.

Anyone remember Schefter's awesome Q&A and how Williamson tried to take that on after he left? That was the most unispired, pathetic piece of garbage ever consituted in the DP Broncos section.

The dropoff was blatantly obvious on Day 1 and it hasn't gotten any better. I'm sure Bill has a family to feed and I hate calling for people's jobs, but he had better sh!t or get off the pot, because he's a public figure in Broncos world. It's just like he doesn't even bother trying. I still can't believe the Post hasn't lit a fire under him. He must be under contract or something...

Schefter did a good job getting inside scoop, but I found his restaurant reviews extremely gay. It started out as just a small thing, but then he would go on for several paragraphs about it before he got to the questions in his mailbag. I didn't like hearing about "lightly buttered pear scones and semi-sweet rose water to die for". That's ****ing gay. I don't stay up till midnight to get the damn articles to read that ****. In fact, about 4,5 years ago, we had a little spoof on Schefter's restaurant reviews here on the Mane, it was like a monthly thing where "Alan Shyster" would review Burger King and Carl's Jr. and stuff and then have a mailbag with with demeaning and condescending responses to questions just like Schefter occasionally did.

I do agree on the restaurant thing. My point was, you could tell that Schefter put a lot of time and effort into his work. I was trying to highlight the disparity between the two with the comparison to Bill's lackluster attempt at the Bronco's Mailbag.

I would subscribe to a mailing of the Denver post in that case. Hesitate to do so now b/c I know how our paper is ran. Honestly Memphis is in a tough spot b/c it is surround by SEC teams with high energy and then you get to the CUSA which memphis is in and nothing. No excitement until very very recently b/c of a couple of bowl games. If I knew for sure that the Denver Post gave more info then any other AP correspondant and more in depth anaylsis I would so sign up for it.

I've been a beat writer for a college basketball team and high school sports and while I will never become a big-time beat writer for an NFL team (let alone college), the work he does is below average at best.

He's not informative and is not on top of things like beat writers are suppose to be.

Yeah, that pissed me off. You'd think he could fart out something more interesting. They shoo away all the other press and he gets to stand right next to Shanahan and pick his brain...probably about good steak houses.

The Denver Print Media is absolutely dead. Everyone who had anything resembling an interesting thing to say has moved on and we're left with a cast of characters that seriously couldn't find a buffet table if Mike Shanahan didn't explain to them what one looked like.

I'm attempting to put together a fair list of links to anything relevant on my blog, if any Bronco fans want to check it out, there'll be a new post on the Broncos every day with most of the articles that don't make me want to puke. (And total beatings handed out to the ones that do.) The link is in my sig, don't have to register to read it, starting this weekend, it should be updated daily for Bronco links/articles.

The Shyster might of been a girly man wearing a fleece jacket in a marathon and amatur food tester, which is a bad combo for marathon runners, and Woodpecker was more comedian than anything, but man. Dealing with Williamson, Klis and Kizler makes me miss them. Mason and Armstrong do good jobs at least.

With all the new traffic...we need to bombard Bowlen with e-mails to get at least ONE press pass. SoCal is so passionate he's in a freakin' hotel. OF1 is the hands down best tailgater. Kaylore is consistently reporting. None get a dime...just ridicule from Fred the angry clown. I'm pretty sure Mediator has a pass, but I'm not sure if he just freelances or what. I can't remember what he writes for. OM certainly deserves more respect.

Going to the Post is an afterthought at this point. The whole board clamors for our daily reports now. I saw 61 on at once last time I looked on the Camp Report thread. One guy actually started a thread complaining that they were late!

Burger Bill gets his questions answered preferencially and this is the best he can come up with? Seriously, we need a grass roots emailing campaign to get a OM press pass. I don't know how that works, if it has to be person specific or it can be just an OM pass.

What do you guys/gals think? Isn't it time we got at least one OM press pass? I'm sure we could raise the money since these guys bust their butts for us for nothing.

I just liked to make fun of his food reviews and condesending attitude to people on his newsrag, seemingly only posting people that were licking his sack with stupid questions that anyone could answer. He was much better, I figured we would get an upgrade, not an Edsel. I don't think Williamson even cares as long has he can keep picking up his paycheck.

Another Post blunder: taking Patrick Saunders off the Bronco Beat and replacing him with Rockies reporter Mike Klis. Klis has not impressed me at all with his writing or radio interviews (he did a better job when he covered the Rockies). Saunders used to have excellent weekly radio reports and was once given an award by Shanahan as the best media representive covering the Broncos camp.
