Saw this picture in a different forum and just had to post it.
The height of this jump as Cromartie made this INT is just disgusting.

If not for his torn ACL last year, he'd have easily been the first corner taken in the draft and possibly a top 10 pick. If he's healthy, the Bolts got a steal at #19.

His health isn't the question, his experience is. The guy had almost no starting experience at college and is incredibly raw. There was a report from Chargers camp a few days ago how he was getting schooled by a practice squad receiver. Cromartie is the biggest bust/boon pick in the draft rivaled only by Vince Young.

I'm hearing good things about Marlon McRee, too. Between Cro and Maron, SD might have a legit secondary this year.

He can gain experience, his speed, athleticism and height are amazing.
Even if he doesn't pan out, he's absolutely worth the risk at the 19th pick.

I was hoping no one in the division would get him, and am pissed he went to SD. The experience argument has a little merit, but FSU rotates their Defensive players more than just about any school. I hope he does take awhile to "get it" because once he does he is going to be amazing.

San Diego IMO has the best defense in the West. If Cromartie ends up playing to his abilities it will seal the deal. They already have the best Run D IMO. Merriman is going to an all-pro for the next decade. For the most part they are a fairly young Defense too. Scary.

theyre gonna need some more LBs tho with edwards, godfrey, and foley all having been in the league for a while and all the rumors that were circulating about edwards.
we were watching film the other day of the chargers and jamal williams is a beast even at 30 or however old he is. id say he is a key cog for them along with edwards and merriman. castillo has tons of power in those legs and you see the front 3 and 7 getting a huge push. you can see why they have a great run D. i needa get more film from my coaches

There is no way Cromartie will be a legit NFL ready CB this season. That is the main reason I didn't want KC to draft him.

Agreed. Their DLine and LB's are sick. Now they've upgraded their secondary. Here's hoping they don't live up to their potential again this year.
All reports from Chargers camp are saying that Rivers is having a very nice camp.
Kind of a bummer that both of the games vs. the Broncos are late in the season. Rivers should be firmly entrenched by then. I could see them as being the stiffest competition for the Broncos in the West...

Merriman is downright freaky. I'd love for him to be in the blue and orange. He's nasty and tough and good. Great combo.
His nickname in my house is Scariman.

I expect that Rivers is more likely to put together a decent first season as a starter, than Jake is to pull off another miracle.

I like the Bolts, myself. Never seems to work out real well for their fans - either on this board, or on the field. Crappy ownership, basically. As soon as Spanos gets a new stadium - fire sale. The guy is not a sportsman, he's a bidnessman.

What is the Chargers record since 1999? 47-65?
You don't see the Broncos winning without Elway and TD? Shanahan is 67-45 since Elway retired.
And finally what's Marty's record in the playoffs and Super Bowls? Don't bother answering that question, you'll lose.
Shanahan holds an 8-5 playoff record and is 2-0 in Superbowls.

Isn't it rediculous how the bolts and faders draft DBs every year that don't do jack. I don't know about Crom. You can probly add him to the list. Though athletically hes probly better then the rest of the bolt CBs. Yeah we've had Middlebust and Deltha among others, but those teams draft a DB the first day every year. Huff is the only one out of the group I'd consider a good pick the past few years.

News flash - Rivers is not a rookie. He was the number four pick in the first round three drafts ago. He spent two years learning and now he's taking over. He is a first year starter, perhaps that's what you meant to say? I'll tell you this, he's 6'5'' and has a quick release and he's an accurate passer. He can hit the receivers in full stride. Those are things that I couldn't say about Brees. If you use the blitzing (8/9 in the box defense) this year, it'll be way different than it was against Drew. It'll be bombs away.
As for Cromartie, he'll be the nickel back this year. He has terrific speed and he sure can jump but he is raw.
I'm pretty much a Shanahan hater but I think he's out-coached Marty the last couple of years when the teams were fairly even in talent.

I'm pretty much a Shanahan hater but I think he's out-coached Marty the last couple of years when the teams were fairly even in talent.
First year starter, rook....same thing. It all boils down to no NFL experience. We shall see. I know plenty of Bolt fans that are very nervous about him.

it's kind of ironic that guy thinks the other dude is a raider fan, considering what the 'raider' fan's sign says, and assuming the 12 year old cannot read it.
also - just a correction - the practice squad reciever that was referred to earlier as 'schooling' cro was non other than vincent jackson - hardly a p.s. player...you all should know who that is. he's coming up - FAST.
Except it wasn't VJ, it was Greg Camarillo. Jackson wasn't even in camp that day and it was incorrectly reported as Jackson by the writer.

Bottom line IF Rivers is really ready his first live year SD will be our biggest division threat this year.
Fortunately they still have Marty who is sure to screw up some where along the line!
I'll take Marty over Shanarat. I just don't see the Donks winning without Elway and TDHa!

incorrectly reported? i also read that greg camarillo was doing well against him, but the day i was referring to was vj. and what day was vj 'not' in camp? he had a minor leg thing early i believe, but he's been there every day and practiced most of them. also - from what i've read, camarillo has had a damn good camp.

Yeah, the report I was talking about was from earlier when VJ wasn't participating. I haven't exactly followed the Chargers camp reports closely, I only know that Camarillo (who I was referring to with "a practice squad player") was getting the better of Cromartie from one of the earlier reports I read.

Shanny is 3-0 in superbowls, won another with san fran but not as a head coach.

Even though he's not a rookie, he does have little experience, so Marty and company are going to try to not put everything on Rivers' shoulders. That means the defense is going to have to step up and from camp reports, the new safety, Marlon McCree and Drayton Florence are looking very good. Cromartie is still hit and miss. A big play here but gets beaten badly on the next, but he's a gambler so that's going to happen with him.
About the linebackers, there are two guys they're very high on: Matt Wilhelm and Steven Cooper. If they were to trade Edwards, it appears Wilhelm would be the one taking his spot. There may be a slight dip there but he's still very young and has a lot of upside and has made big plays so far when he's been given the opportunity to play.
Initially, I wasn't too optimistic for this season with the loss of Brees, but Rivers has surprised everyone so far with where's he at. With the new coaching staff and the implosion starting in KC already, I think the Chargers, not the Chiefs, will be the main competition for the Broncos this year.

how is oben doing?
boltaneer
08-04-2006, 02:32 PM
Oben hasn't been participating in any practices but only very light drills.
I'm not expecting him to be ready for the start of the season but AJ Smith and Marty seem somewhat confident that he'll be ready.
If Leander Jordan starts at LT again, Rivers better make use of that quick release before he gets killed!
The o-line is the biggest concern of mine with the team. They tanked down the stretch last season. Maybe the new o-line coach can get them back up to par.

yeah, i figured OLine would be the biggest weakness this year. i also see your receiving corps as a problem. if you count LT & gates it is good but you need a peripheral game or else there will be 8 or 9 in the box just watching for LT and antonio. keenan mccardell can be solid but very up and down(6 TDs/6 wks to none???) and vincent jackson hasnt proven much yet. youll need to replace mccardell in a couple years and the task will be to have two serviceable receivers. another worry for me is your secondary, jammer has never really proven to be a top 10 pick and the jury is really out on the rest...scary team tho, no doubt, that front 7 jeez

Hopefully for us, McCree will be the ballhawk free-safety we've been missing in recent years.
Jammer recently came out and said that he's been playing tenatively because he didn't trust his safety help. (Jerry Wilson was slow as molasses and Jue was a disappointment last year) Our FS position has been a disappointment to say the least. I think because of that, he tries to keep his defender in front of him and not give up the big play. That means he can't go for big plays either but he's been slowly improving each year. If what he says is true and if McCree is a solid upgrade at FS, I think Jammer could finally have a breakout year.
Florence has been looking incredible with Cromartie pushing him for that spot. Depending on how aggressive Wade goes with the defense this year with a great pass rush finally intact, I think the secondary has a chance to shine finally.
Jackson, McCardell and Parker have all been looking great in camp so far. I think we'll be fine there. The offense isn't going to change that much in that LT and Gates will still be the main weapons. There's really no need for a true number one receiver in this offense, though Jackson has the potential to be one.

If Oben doesn't make it back, remember the Bolts did spend their #2 pick on an OT, Marcus McNeil from Auburn. I heard that he's been taking reps with the first team offense the last few days. Also, their left guard, Kris Dielman was new to the position last year (he switched from DT), and a lot of fans have high hopes for him to improve this year. They also have decent depth now. I think their O Line will be solid enough this year. As for Rivers, who knows yet, but he definetely is a much better physical specimen than Droofus was at QB. And by the way, it's not like the Chargers are the only team in the division with QB uncertainty. Jake Plummer's only had 1 good season in his career. What makes you so certain that he's going to repeat? He was looking pretty horrible in your last game of the season.
My biggest concerns about the Chargers are #1 Rivers and #2 their secondary. But that pic of Cromartie makes me optimistic. McCree was a great pickup too, and should help the secondary all over the board. Matt Wilhelm starting (hopefully) over Donnie Edwards should also help in the pass coverage - and the run D too for that matter.
Go ahead and write us off though, please -- being underdogs is one thing that we have going for us this season that we didn't last. :)

Glad to see mention of Vincent Jackson. Such a good kid. My nephew was one of the staff who recruited him to the University of Northern Colorado. No one ever had a bad word about the guy in college. Nice to see someone from one of the smaller schools get a shot.

Oh they will easily be our tuffest competation. The Faders are a joke and KC still needs time and some key players on the Oline
