From the Altanta Journal
Flowery Branch — The Falcons are exploring trade possibilities for a pair of disgruntled but productive veteran wide receivers: Oakland's Jerry Porter and Denver's Ashley Lelie.
Atlanta's personnel department has been doing due diligence on both players but probably will wait at least a week to decide whether to pursue a trade.
The Falcons are trying to figure out how to replace No.3 wide reciver Brian Finneran, who suffered a season-ending knee injury at practice Sunday. They want to take an extended look at players already in house — they worked out cornerback DeAngelo Hall at wide receiver Wednesday — before exploring outside interests.
"We're still working through a lot of scenarios that could involve players from another team, players out on the street and players that are on our team," coach Jim Mora said.
Porter, a seven-year veteran who has been at odds with new coach Art Shell, has caught 140 passes for 1,940 yards the past two seasons. Lelie, mainly a deep threat, caught 42 passes for 770 yards last season. He has not reported to Denver's training camp with hopes of being dealt.
Whether either of those players would settle for being the No. 3 receiver could be another issue, but Mora said any player the Falcons bring in — if they do bring a player in — would not replace or even compete with Michael Jenkins and Roddy White, the team's starting wide receivers.
The agent for 17-year veteran free agent Ricky Proehl said Tuesday that he has spoken with the Falcons about Proehl's services, but the team wanted to wait at least a week before making a decision.

I thought Proehl retired. I remember the Panthers wanting him back very badly, but i thought he said it was time to hang'em up. I mean, what does have to play for? It's not like he's goin to the HOF and he's got a ring.

I believe Porter's agent has been also trying to work out a trade for Porter well before the draft as well, but no takers.
Not only do the Raiders want either draft picks or established players, but they also want the $4 million bounus he received for this season.
I love Alice Davis's comments on Porter:
"He has lost his way a little bit," Davis said of Porter, "but he is a good guy."

But those two guys are pretty much the same WR and so is Lily.

IMO, the idea of not letting anyone else come in and compete for a positon is redicoulous
that's why this whole Lelie situation is baffling.....He has it made here in Denver.

if this article is quoting the falcons correctly....
how can they make the decision to say that a player can't compete for a starting spot....that's idiotic...
add in the fact that porter or lelie have more experience than both their starters...AND white & jenkins aren't exactly harrison & wayne at wideout...
i can see lelie and/or porter starting over jenkins or white....

I don't think it matters. Vick is going to over/under throw all of them regardless of who they are.
I think the real reason lelie wants out of Denver is because he believes with Jake throwing him the ball he will never be able to showcase his talents (he is right too) so it would be ironic if he went to Atlanta and has Vick throwing nim the ball.

yeah, I wouldn't wish Michael Vick on any WR. He does a better job of shutting down WRs than most CBs in this league.

It's the offense, not just Jake.....Lelie had huge numbers playing with the "bad" Jake.

That's to funny. Lelie had is chances to be the number one guy, and he didn't step, and now he's b1tching because he's not the starter. Now Mora said, it dosn't matter who they bring in, he has his two starters set. Ok, I would love to see Lelie go to the falcons, because he would be the third or possibly the fourth guy if they get both porter and lelie.

Its OK.
Ashley understands this kind of thinking.
It doesnt matter who plays the best.........its all about who the coach puts at number one and two. Theres no competition...............just rank.

from yahoo
Aug 3 Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos WR Ashley Lelie has been fined $98,000 so far for holding himself out of training camp.

The article implies that Lelie is markedly worse than Porter. He DOES have 1850 recieving the last two years. That's less than 90 yards less then Porter. Why did they give two years on Porter and only one on Lelie?

Only funny cause it is true....If the herpes infested Mexico had T.O, Randy Moss and Marvin Harrison as his WR's he would still struggle to throw for 3000 yards and the media would have to defend him by claiming T.O, Moss and Harrison were busts.

I'd take porter over Lelie any day. Porter is bigger and more physical and a guy that can catch over the middle. Lelie has alligator arms when he goes across the middle.
To me, the stats that are more important than yards, and ypc, are the TD's and First downs. Lelie has 119 First Downs and since 2002 (to be fair to lelies youth) Porter has 149 First Downs. Since 02, Porter has 24 TD's and Lelie only has 12. Those stats show that Porter is a better third down option than Lelie and is a better finisher. Lelie makes big catches for big yards, but few of them ever translate into TD's. He's always falling down or going out of bounds when he makes those catches. Maybe that's Jake's fault, but Rod Smith doesn't seem to have that problem, so what's the excuse?

Don't forget about Crumpler who is thier actual #1 based off of stats and who Vick liked to throw to.

Not saying they are anywhere near this talent level, but Lelie/Porter is like Moss/TO to me. I would rather have a TO-like WR on my roster. Minus the insane drama queen bitch attitude, of course.

Why don't Denver and the Faid just say f#ckit and swap WRs. Porter would look good in a Bronco uniform. and Lelie well, he would look good playing behind the likes of Doug Gabirel.

I would talke Porter over Lelie 10 out of 10 times. In my opinion I think he is a much better wr than Lelie. His first few years he was playing behind Tim Brown and Jerry Rice and in 2002 he had 9 tds. Then the past 2 yrs the guy has put together back to back 900+ yds season with an average of 70 catches and 7 tds per season.

Not really. Porter has gotten better every year except for 2003 where he started only 10 games.

and for as highly thought of as Porter is as a WR, his next 1,000 yd season will be his first.

porter is more of a possession receiver. atl already has three lanky spread the field receivers,(two if u dont count finneran). the west coast needs a possession receiver who can catch and isnt neccessarily a burner. porter would make more sense from that point of view. i think the raiders asking price will be too high however and they sure dont need duckett, jordan can slam iuf he can do anything.

Atl does have Crumpler and Dunn for the underneath stuff, they really try to stretch the field for Vivk to have room also.
