Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith suffered what was portrayed as a minor hamstring injury during Wednesday morning's training camp practice at Dove Valley, CBS4 Broncos Insider Reggie Rivers reported.

The injury happened during an offense-on-defense scrimmage. Jake Plummer was throwing to Smith as he broke across the middle on a deep cross. The problem was Plummer threw the ball to the outside as if he'd expected Smith to run a corner route.

It appeared to be a miscommunication, but then Smith pulled up a little bit. He didn't grab his hamstring, but did walk off the field gingerly.

Smith sat out the rest of practice, but he didn't have ice on his leg and the trainers didn't take him inside for immediate treatment.

After practice, head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that Smith had injured his hamstring. He said Smith was held out of the remainder of the drills as a precaution. Shanahan doesn't anticipate that Smith will be out for long.

That was pretty sketchy, next time can you put Rod Smith injured not very seriously? ;)

GEEZ! Don't do that! Put "Rod Smith Tweaks Hammy" or something. "Injured" means "Might miss games."

In the name of all that's holy, next time please qualify "injured" a little better in your thread title, mmmmmk? Thanks.

Yeah, a title change is inorder.

Hopefully this isn't like Champ's hamstring injury last year. Yeah, he played through it, but he wasn't up to speed until mid season.

Yeah, those hamstring injuries just dont go away. Having an 80-90% Rod Smith isn't encouraging at all considering his age, but one thing is for sure. Any version of Rod Smith is better than anything that the Chefs can put on the field.

As much as I hate to see Rod hurt, the man knows his job and we know what to expect from him when the season starts. Lets focus on the flip side. This will mean that many more reps for Marshall, Terrell, Kircus, etc... as they work to round out this receiving corp.

Subtle, yes. The inclusion of blame is there nonetheless:

"The injury happened during an offense-on-defense scrimmage. Jake Plummer was throwing to Smith as he broke across the middle on a deep cross. The problem was Plummer threw the ball to the outside as if he'd expected Smith to run a corner route.

If he was simply covering a Rod Smith injury he would have said that Smith injured himself by trying to catch a pass. Instead, it reads with spin on unneccessary information.

I wouldnt practice or play Rod until the last week of preseason before the last home preseason game. Just have him stay in shape and act as a player/coach on the sidelines schooling the other WR, then the last two weeks of practice before the opener and the last preseason game will be plenty of time for him to tune up with Plummer and by doing so make damn sure his Hammy is 100%.

Rod and Plummer know each other in their sleep. Let the other guys get more reps the next three weeks and the first 3 preseason games while Rod earns a good rest but stays in top shape.

I guess it's all in how you want to take the inference. If it would've said the problem was Rod Smith was to go across the middle on a deep cross towards the post and Plummer through the ball to outside, I'd say there was a spin to blame Jake.

Since the actual route wasn't clarified I just took it as a description of what happened. Jake went out, Rod went in. No blame placed on either. That's the way I took it anyway.

At his age injuries make a dramatic difference. They take time to heal, linger and affect play. This is the reason I argued during the off-season that KC's OL was in trouble (the injuries creeped last yr), but the KC fanboys (I don't think there are any fangirls) in this forum were too busy praying at the altar to notice. Hopefully the injury is really minor. If it is anything like Champ's last yr, then his route options will be fairly limited.

Not at all like Champ's situation. Champ never took the time to heal, Rod has over a month before we need him. Enuff said.

I do worry some about this injury. While Shanahan initially downplayed it as a 'tweak', he did go on to say he wasn't sure yet how serious it is.

What concerns me a little more is that Rod, always the optimist, refused to talk with reporters after practice.

Well, if it had to happen, now is better timing than a week or so before the regular season I suppose.

It's just that these damnable hamstring things always seem to linger forever...depending on the severity of course.

Whoever was the jackass that changed the thread title might want to reconsider that. Fact is it is an injury and looks to be more then just a tweek. This is more serious then you guys think it is.

http://www.denverpost.com/ci_4128776?source=rss

"Rod is smart to know that with a hamstring, there is nothing you can do about it except rest it, and we might have to get him an extra day. Instead of being two days up, it might have to be three. I really don't know how bad it is," Shanahan said. "(Broncos trainer Steve Antonopulos) said it was just a tweak, but it could be a little more serious than that. I don't think it will be too long, knowing Rod."

Yea, it's weird to think that a player would make a mistake in training camp, huh? I'm sure Rod has never made a mistake, though.

Dude, people get their mind set on something and no amount of factual information is going to dissuade them.

Of all the QBs that played in all 16 games in 2005, who threw the least interceptions?

A. Jake Plummer
B. Peyton Manning
C. Trent Green
D. Matt Hassellbeck

Any guesses?

As for Rod, if he tweaked a hammy... sit his ass down until the season starts. We can't mess around with him. He's the difference between our offense being frightening and about the same as we were last year. (Which was damned good.)

Having both Javon and Rod out there is the key.
