Could someone please explain to me this system I just noticed on the User CP that I had some points but I don't completely understand the whole thing.

Thanks

Ah yes, let's open this can of worms right after the "Forum Losers" thread is locked.

Good times had by all this off-season.

The rep system is a way to let fellow posters about their post content...or in some cases to send them a short message. We used to have it displayed so everyone could see...but then you have posters overtly seeking approval which makes it meaningless....so your rep is only known to you. Whether negative or positive...it's all in good fun and should not be taken seriously.

The rep system used to be good, but people bitched and TJ had to make it crappy to shut them up.

That pretty well sums it up.

Oh, and if somebody mentions a "Rep Schlong," do not be afraid. It's normal.

No homo.

It never should have been messed with. It was fine the way it was. I still give out rep. It's a great way of sending little compliments (or complaints) without bogging down the actual thread with something everyone doesn't really need (or probably care) to know.

Some people just seem to have this need for a hierarchy or a ranking system to feel special and above others or something....I've never understood it.

Hence, you have things like rep systems, gala awards and the like...all are nothing more than sugar cubes for the ego. It's fine for those who need such things I guess....but I make a conscious effort steer clear of all of it. I haven't even looked at the rep thing in months and I never use it anyways...so I guess I don't miss it very much.

The Rep system is extremely crucial to the Mane: one slip of the mouse and you can ruin someone's life and career! Who new something so simple could get soooo serious! Hilarious!

I'd pay to see what Mock's rep page looks like.

I love the rep system the way it currently is... It's the equivalent of an Internet slap on the back, or giving someone the finger.

People took it way to seriously and it became a distraction. The way it is now is the way I had envisioned it would work in the first place when I found out they were adding it to the base vBulletin package.

The fact that people took it too seriously proves that the people needed adjustments, not the system. I thought it was hilarious. Now, I rarely give rep out unless I just don't want to put out the energy to send someone a PM.
