View Full Version : Tatum Bell was the rave of Day 1

RB: Tatum Bell was the rave of Day 1. Bell looked noticeably bigger and was in great condition. Bell ran exclusively with the first team and looked even more explosive than ever. He consistently ripped huge gains through the middle and outran defnders to the corner before cutting upfield for what would have easily been 10-15 yard gains. While Bell was focused and modest, you could see an air of confidence and swagger to him...something apparently Mike Shanahan liked because several people overheard him go up to Tatum Bell and ask him if he's ready to run for 1600. Bell was seen joking around with Plummer and Rod Smith as the second team got their reps. Ron Dayne looked solid, but unspectacular. Dayne ran with the second team and performed ok, had a case of fumbilitis for a while, but pulled himself together to finish the practice well. Dayne's conditioning looked ok, but he was noticeably winded after his drills. The dog of the day was Cedric Cobbs. He couldn't finish his conditioning drills, and Bobby Turner ripped him a new one. When Cobbs got some reps in he ran the wrong play, fumbled, and dropped an easy swing pass which set Mike Shanahan on fire. At this point, Cobbs looks like he'll be lucky to be carried on the practice squad. Cobbs was also limping after practice.

I love the Bell news... he had a chance to be a bigger, faster, version of Portis minus the hands. He definitely hasn't had the swagger and needed to mature. Hopefully this is the year. It couldn't come at a more crucial time. If we get a HB, across the board I think we have the most consistant talent in the AFC with only TE and DE being deficient of true impact players.

This is good news for us and Tatum Bell. And before people start laying into Khan's reports, lets keep in mind that Khan is looking at each position and trying to give us an overall picture rather than a super detailed picture of one player in particular. Khan had a couple misses last year as well, but he's also the one that told us all about BVP earning the #2 early and DWill looking like a stud. I think Tatum probably did a little better than what Khan's report stated and not quite as good as what this guy's report states.
Just want to make sure that people don't jump on Khan and start questioning who to believe...... BELIEVE KHAN!
I imagine it will truly be hard to evaluate until we get into game time especially with the HB's. You can run plays over and over in practice but until you get true, live looks you won't know what the finished product will be.

That's dissapointing about Cobbs, exciting about Tater Tot, obviously. Cobbs was very highly recruited out of H.S. Sounds like he had a horrible first day. He won't be here long if he has more like it.

That's great news for tatum. Not great news about cobbs. I thought cobbs was going to be good here. but it's still only the first day. But it sounds from what everyone is saying, we have a great team this year.

First day of camp. So everything need to be taken with grain of salt.
Lets not blow this out of proportion. I think Bell, Cobbs or Dayne could easily step in and fill the roll for us.
Reuben Drougns was cut from Detroit... play little if at all for us in the beginning of his broncos career. I've played against Cobbs... the guy is big, fast, and strong... doesn't have that bad of instincts either.
Trust me... just wait until our games to evaluate this position. Cobbs is going to surprise. I'm happy to hear that Bell looked good though.

Great news.... But everyone knows he can do this. Problem is, can he do it on the 20th carry of the game?

Man chill go have beer and some more kids ;D
I just don't want us to act like skins fans. It good sign that Bell running with first unit, and I think that this is the year he get it. Last year was basically his rookie campaign, because of all the injuries in first season. And takes most players three years to figure out what going on, unless they are really special.

Great news.... But everyone knows he can do this. Problem is, can he do it on the 20th carry of the game?
Someone showed how he was more effective in the fourth quarter last year than in the early quarters.
I suspect he can carry the load, especially considering the conditioning part of the report. If he is bigger and stronger, that should help him on the inside AND blocks, areas he was not great in last year that hindered him from really taking the job out of Anderson's hands outright.
Still, first day and all, better that he is doing well now than not doing well at all.

I really hope the guy can get it done... I was ecstatic when we drafted him, but lost alot of confidence in him last year. He seemed to go down at the slightest of contact and often missed the whole only to run into the back of one of our gaurds. Hopefully with more reps in training camp he can get a better feel for things and show that explosion that we all know he has.

I view tater as the key to the season..........
No matter who the #2 RB is, they will get their share of carries, especially if Tater is #1- still has to prove self on carries 11+........

Tater can definitely be a game-breaker. I see Dayne as more of a clock management, always picking up 4-6 yds per carry. Hopefully, Tater will be able to break some long runs.

I wouldnt mind a RB by committee duo with Tater handling the first half of games and a fresh T. Jones the second half and goal line work!

Not to mention that last camp they said he kind of took things for granted a bit and felt he would surely win the starting job his second year.
Now he knows he has to earn it everyday and has the burners on!

I wanted to throw in Jones, but he isn't on the team - yet! If we got Jones, would Tater go to #3 since Jones and Tater have more of a similar running style than Jones and Dayne?

If Tatum looked good Shanny may forget about adding another RB.

IDK, this team might be devoid of all weakness. If Lang, Dumervil and Cory Jackson, Ekuban, Engleberger, and Brown can be solid contributers that will not be a weakness, just a solid line devoid of major superstars.
And at TE, Scheff might just end up having a great year. I mean he has incredible talent and just needs to improve his blocking a little and he will be a great weapon. He is already gonna b important in the red zone, I see this as a team with no real weaknesses. Just a couple areas with no big names.

That's a definite possiblity. I'm one set of eyes and have to stand a ways back. I do my best, but have been wrong many times before.

I'm loving the hype on Sheft. If he can play like i'm hearing, he sounds like he could be another Todd Heap. I dont' think any of us would argue with that.
As for the DLine... they've been pretty much that way over the past few years since Trevor injured his back. I think Warren is the lone big name right now with a bunch of spare part players who can rotate well together. I have a lot of hope for them but there are no pro bowlers for sure. Doesn't matter though. If they can all peice together 5,6,7 sacks, it will add up and we can mix in the blitz for the rest. We just need to keep stopping the run, make teams one dimentional and get some timely sacks. More often than not, that is all you need.
