...I have two of them.
Before we leave off season mode I wanted to throw this out there. My 8 (almost 9) year old son and 11 yeard old daughter are playing Pop Warner football this year and apparently my little corn-fed monsters are both going to be Right Guards. This is the first year of football for both of them and it's looking my daughter might be 1st string. They just wrapped up their first week of practices. It's "Hell Week" for conditioning and they suit up next Monday. If I get pics before we leave off season mode I'll post them so you all can see how adorable my kids are.

They allow inter gender football for her, or is it a girls league?
I sorely wish i played pop Warner instead of soccer.

It's a league for little kids male or female. She's the only girl on the team this year but there have been several others. My older daughter played for the same team ten years ago, as a DT. She played next to my son, who was a DE/OT. They play in full pads and the rules are very similar to High School football.

They have four levels: Jr. Peewee, Peewee, Jr. Midget and Midget. They go by weight and age. My son was on the waiting list last year for his group and didn't make it on. He was #1 on the waiting list this year but made it on the team when another kid dropped out. My daughter was a cheerleader for her team last year and played this year. They had been doing soccer in the fall until last year. They got burned out on soccer and wanted the contact.

This is the two of them last year after a game. Right now she's 11 years, 5'2" and 115 pounds-right at the weight limit for her team. He's a bit under 5' at 90 pounds and will be 9 in October. Notice my son's cool orange and blue watersocks:

I don't have any pics but I have a Training Camp update.
OK-it's one week of conditioning, one week of positional drills and one week of team practice followed by a pre-season game. Then one more week of practice with a gameplan followed by another pre-season game.
I like calling it Training Camp.
Anyway...my daughter sprained her shoulder on the first day of full pads (this last Monday) and had to condition without contact. She doesn't look like she's going to be able to pull off starting at Guard after the missed practice time but she made a hell of a case for starting at DE/DT tonight. She started off matching up well against the starting RG at DT. She was moved to DE and almost snagged the 1st string QB. After that they double-teamed her and ran away from her as she was splitting the double teams. She has now learned "the swim move". She says she gets pressure on the QB by pretending that he has a "Togos" sandwich, which she loves.
My son has been moved from back-up Right Guard to starting Right Tackle. He's been blocking like a beast and some of the boys have started calling him "Tank" because he is so hard to stop. They still do ball carrier drills (mainly to practice tackling) and only a few "veterans" on his team can bring him down. He can't wait until he is a "veteran" after the first game in a week and a half or so. Unfortunately he got a stuffed up nose during practice today and didn't want to say anything. He let it go and ran out of breath with his chest throbbing, had to sit out the last 20 minutes of practice. His coach and I assured him that anytime he couldn't breath he should really say something next time. Scared the crap out of him and me. I'm going to try to remember to get some pics of them.

Here's one of my daughter on the sidelines from the local paper. If you're trying to read the name her game jersey says "SUPERGIRL" on the back. The coach allowed nicknames on game jerseys and she didn't tell me until it was too late because she knows I'm too old school and wouldn't have given permission. She's #74:

I've coached a couple of girls over the last five years. One made the all star team. She was tougher than half the boys I've coached. I remember being on the field after she had leveled a kid on a block, and hearing one of his teamates tell him "Hey you just got nailed by a girl with a scrunchie". Still cracks me up when I think about it.

They have to really get into it to play. My daughter has a really strong build and wanted to play during recess at school but the boys told her that girls can't play. It pissed her off enough to prove them wrong. She is finding out now that it's pretty fun.

We were playing in a little town named "Weed" California. Very deep into Northern 9er/Raider country. My kids, being good little Bronco fans, pointed it out to me imediately and said that they wanted to beat them especially because the uniforms reminded them of the Raiders. They said after the games that the only thing that would have made the wins better would have been if they actually had the Raider logo on their helmets.

I'd never let my daughters play football (but then again, I pulled my son).
I'm not saying that you're wrong, listo. I'm saying that I have a prejudice against girls playing football with boys.
(Wait a minute. Is she playing with boys, or girls?)
I'm ready to hear why I'm wrong.
I've got a problem with teaching boys that it's acceptable to level a girl, even if she's wearing pads.
I've got a problem with the possibility that boys might "let up" on a girl who's playing the game.
Eventually, the vast majority of these boys will be capable of dominating the vast majority of these girls on the field. I don't think that reality will help the girls view themselves in a better light, ultimately. They may, in fact see themselves as weaker than boys, rather than just different.
Different is easily defensible. Weakness might just stick around for a while.

Yes, she is playing against boys. Keep in mind that at this age level girls and boys aren't necessarily very different in physical ability. I understand your points and they are good ones and I can only respond by telling you what I am seeing. What I am seeing is that players are treating her with the same respect they treat each other. I am also seeing her self esteem rise. Her social skills are improving and she is actually fitting in better at school as she is finding her sense of self and defining it. Her attitude towards boys and what constitutes the makeup of a quality individual of the opposite sex is being defined. She has moved away from being impressed with boys who just show her attention and now chooses to be around boys (and girls) who have merit. This is a very important stage in her life and it will effect her interpersonal relationships for the rest of her life. I like the fact that she demands to be treated as an equal. I'm going to foster that attitude for as long as I have any influence over her.
Yes, there comes a time when the boys are too big for her to compete against. She will probably play one more year then move on to something else. Your comment about "difference" versus "weakness" stands out to me for some reason. The fact of the matter is that some people are physically weaker than others and most girls/women are physically weaker than most boys/men. I don't think facing that reality causes long term ill effects. In the long run she won't be judging herself, and others won't be judging her for that matter, based on her physical strength. She will be judged primarily on her ability in the adult world and she is going to have to compete with others, both men and women. I think the qualities she is developing right now are going to help her compete as an adult.

I'm surprised that this thread hasn't moved yet, but I'll keep pimping away. My daughter just got "Player Of The Week" honors announced at practice tonight. She got to go out on the field as a Captain for the kickoff last Saturday and shake hands with the four Captains of the opposing team, one of which was also a girl. She is very proud of the honor (as am I of her) and she plans to wear the T-Shirt to school tomorow. Just FYI, there are only nine weeks of the regular season and three weeks of playoffs so only a total of twelve kids can make Player Of The Week. There are about thirty kids on her team. She's still playing at Left Tackle but gets to practice at DE and DT through the week. My son may be moving from LT to Guard this week as they are shaking up the OL on his team. His Center is having problems with the snap and the coaches are getting pissed. They continue to put out who they think are the best five kids on the line and they want to keep the kid out there who is playing C. My son gets to practice and play as a DE and a DT as well as LT. His coaches move kids around more and his age group is supposed to be more instructional than my daughter's. I had pics of last week but they got erased before I could save them. I got a new pair of binocs with a built in digital camera and screwed up the transfer. Ah, well. We have two more games and both of our teams are 7-0. My son's group doesn't have playoffs but my daughter's does. Her team is the #1 seed right now. We're hoping for a first round bye.

More game pics from today. My daughter's team finally lost their first game today. They are now 7-1. Here's a pic of her opening a hole for one of the RB's. I wish I had snapped it just a touch later as she planted that DE, but I rarely get a clear shot of her at LT and snapped it as soon as I got a good sightline. On the very next play the RB followed her block and got the first down.

My daughter can play OT. This play is second and 15. Here she is plowing through the D lineman. In this pic she is 3 yards past the LOS and still pushing her man (OK, boy) backwards. The RB gained 4 yards and was tackled by a LB. That's her about in the middle of the frame. You can see the rest of the O-Line and the TE at the right of the pic.

This is the very next play, third and eleven. She pushed her man (#65) about seven yards off of the LOS and the RB went to her side. She actually caught up with #65 and legally blocked him out of the play again, springing the RB for a first down. Her offensive unit scored two TD's today. She was also in on several tackles as a LB/DE and provided push that resulted in a fumble returned for a third TD while she was on the field.

I find it awesome she is playing and playing well AND that she is allowed to play. I played QB on a powder puff team in High School but it was all women and not taken seriously although we played seriously. Being a woman I dispel the adage that it isn't their sex but they don't want their sons thinking it's ok to hit women. When you're out on the field who knows what is under those helmuts, it's not like a football player is discerning a players sex or race at that moment. A lot of fathers don't want their son's knowing they got hit by a woman. It's a matter of getting hit by a better player and improving your play for the next week. Unfortunate.
But I was going to ask if your daughter has put her hair up in her helmut. She might get "Palamalued".

It hasn't come up yet because she doesn't play any positions that she would get tackled in. So far she is mostly LT with some DT, DE and LB. She does want a shorter hair cut though. What you said is spot on. She takes it seriously and the boys who play against her had better take it seriously or they end up on their butts.

My son's team played their first post season exhibition game today. They won 4-0 against a team that went 7-2 this year. I guess they are 7-3 now. That would make us 10-0. I should point out that my son's team cycled through the roster and every player on the team got at least 12 plays on the field. The other team kept their starters in almost the whole time. I'll have some pics in a bit-I was on the chain gang moving the thing that shows the down and marks the spot of the ball. My wife had the camera and I haven't gotten them out yet.

Here's the 5-3
http://www.guidetocoachingsports.com/images/5_3_2_1Inside.gif
I'll explain something quickly here. My son's team is only running two defensive formations right now. A 6-2 and a 5-3. His line goes DE,DT,NG,NG,DT,DE. To switch to a 5-3 one of the NG's drops back and becomes an OLB. He's playing DT right now and is learning LB so he can play the hybrid NG/LB spot as well.
In the defensive backfield his team goes with CB's on the outside and a single Safety deep.
The attached image shows blue circles around the spots my son plays currently.

My daughter's team runs, for the most part, a standard 4-3 and she plays the traditonal 4-3 DT role. Typically she is the DT penetrating and disrupting the play as she is quick and sneaky but she can hold up pretty well in the running game too.
