PARIS (AP) -- An apology, but no regrets and no detailed explanation on what set him off.
That's where French soccer star Zinedine Zidane left things Wednesday during widely broadcast television interviews that attempted to decipher his ugly head-butting of an Italian opponent during the World Cup final.
He did say he was spurred by cruel insults to his mother and sister. But the exact exchange between France's captain and Marco Materazzi remains a mystery. Zidane never was specific about what enraged him. So, for the moment, the words stay between them.
"I would rather have taken a punch in the jaw than have heard that," he told the Canal-Plus television network, stressing that Materazzi's language was "very harsh," and that he uttered the insults several times.
In his first public comments since Sunday's match, Zidane repeatedly apologized to fans -- especially to children. But he said he didn't regret the abrupt, violent outburst that marked the end of his illustrious 18-year professional career.

"I tell myself that if things happened this way, it's because somewhere up there it was decided that way," the 34-year-old midfielder said in an interview on TF1 television. "And I don't regret anything that happened, I accept it."
Zidane and Materazzi exchanged words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra-time. Seconds later, Zidane lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground.
Zidane was sent off, reducing France to 10 men. Italy went on to win in a penalty shootout with Zidane in the locker room.
The act of aggression marred the end of the World Cup, with many warning it would tarnish the legacy of Zidane, who retired after the tournament.
Wednesday, he stressed he felt no regret "because that would mean (Materazzi) was right to say all that."
"There was a serious provocation," Zidane said. "My act is not forgivable. But they must also punish the true guilty party, and the guilty party is the one who provokes."
For days, sports fans around the world have been riveted by the question: What could Materazzi have said to set Zidane off in the last few moments of his illustrious, 18-year career? Media from Brazil to Britain hired lip readers to try to figure it out, then came up with different answers.
Materazzi has acknowledged he insulted Zidane, without giving specifics. At nearly the same moment Zidane was on TV, excerpts from a Materazzi interview were posted on an Italian paper's Web site. He denied insulting Zidane's mother.
"I didn't say anything to him about racism, religion or politics," Materazzi told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "I didn't talk about his mother, either. I lost my mother when I was 15, and even now I still get emotional talking about her."
Zidane "has always been my hero," Materazzi said. "I admire him a lot."
Materazzi spoke to Zidane in Italian. Zidane, who played several years for Juventus in Turin, speaks Italian.
Despite the head-butt, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball award for best player at the World Cup -- though FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested Zidane could be stripped of the honor.
"The winner of the award is not decided by FIFA, but by an international commission of journalists," Blatter said in Italian newspaper La Repubblica. "That said, FIFA's executive committee has the right, and the duty, to intervene when faced with behavior contrary to the ethics of the sport."
FIFA's disciplinary committee opened an inquiry Tuesday into Zidane's behavior. His red card was not unusual: Zidane was sent off 14 times in his career at the club and international level.
Despite his temper, Zidane is better known for his sportsmanship and dancer-like technique. He is a national hero for the French and a symbol of a young, multicultural France. Born to Algerian immigrants, Zidane grew up playing on concrete in an impoverished neighborhood of Marseille.
President Jacques Chirac has had only kind words for Zidane since the match -- reassuring him that France still "admires and loves him." Many in France already have pardoned Zidane: A poll published Tuesday in Le Parisien newspaper showed 61 percent of the 802 people questioned forgave Zidane.
Zidane said many people have asked him not to retire, but he said he would not change his mind.
"I won't go back on it, at least I hope so. ... It's definitive," he said.
Zidane told TF1 television he was "going to rest, and then move on to something else."

C'mon! He head butted the guy in the CHEST!?!? Any American athlete would have head butted the guy in the FACE and thrown a few punches!! Even better was the Italian's reaction - he fell to the ground as if he had been tazered!
Obviously I am not a soccer guy, but for all the european's comments that our game of footbal is for savages, I would have to say their game of football is for babies; all of the falling to the ground as if you had just been shot acts put on by every player that was even touched by an opponent got real old real fast. :twitch:

Well, well, I don't really get all your hatred for the French. when did that start? Is that really all because they didn't want to go to Iraq with you guys? I'm just curious.
And seriously we Germans do have our reasons, but it's more like a friendly rivalry these days.
And the p***Y thing would actually be more for the Italians. The jokes about the French tanks with 7 gears, one forward and 6 reverse.. that was actually first made by German soldiers in North Africa about the Italians. And wouldn't it have been for the Italians total military incompetence we wouldn't have to go to North Africa or invade Greece to help them, which held back the invasion of Russia for several months and thus the winter might not have stopped our advances... well, I'm ultimately glad that we lost this war, but you know
And for german speaking comments all the time.. wouldn't it have been for the non vote of the German diplomat, German would actually be the world language.. though I'm pretty sure losing both WWs would have changed that anyway :clown:

A miracle? You mean Hitler stopping the tanks? Choosing not to attack for whatever reason? But that's really not the point, sorry :)
It's just that I never noticed that hostility BEFORE Iraq, that's why I'm asking. So it's been there before? I find it curious because it seems to me that we Germans don't get as much abuse as the French, which seems quite strange to me if you say the hatred goes back to WWII.

50% of Americans actually know why they hate the French. Over cooked French fries really pisses us off around here. The rest of us just do it because the TV as well as other folks do it to be cool. I think this whole Zindine Zadane thing is getting blown way out of proportion. He was ejected from the game with 10 minutes left in overtime and Italy did not score while France was down a man. In the shootout, his "replacement" in the rotation made his shot.
So far all intent and purposes, nothing he did hurt his team. What he did was stupid, yes, but it did not cost his team at all

For no reason, the French have sneered at Americans. In the 80s, when Reagan called the Soviet's the "Evil Empire" the French took the communist side.
Indeed, since we bailed them and the rest of Europe out of two ****ing world war's, we have been looked down upon by all of Europe except Britain.

Well, they most likely lose WWI but for the US ... but damn, they took a lot of casualties, so assuming one thinks the US involvment was inevitable, which I do, they actually did a lot of good for the US. And, in WWII they didn't exactly surrender w/o a shot. They surrended after they had been outmanuvered and defeat was inevitable. Probably, they had a moral duty to fight a bit longer to help the Brits get out, but ....
IMO, the anti-french attitude in the US is more along the lines that they make no secret in thinking their culture, language and foreign policy is much more polished and advanced that the US's. When I stayed there 20 years ago, I sort of agreed. Sure there were .... well, I can't use that word anymore ... but in general they were very friendly, and yes the girls were hot. Given the racial issues there, I'm not sure I'd agree now though.
On Iraq ... damn, it's a pain when your potus gets .... well I can't use that word anymore ... by chirac, but, well, it sucks when the French are right (-:
But to say he didn't hurt is team is a joke. They had no choice but to play for a tie when down a man. Just cause the Italians didn't score to close it out in OT doesn't change that.

**** Europe. **** Europeans. They think they matter but, like the European Union, they don't make a bit of difference. No one gives a **** what European trash thinks. When countries want to do something, they dont stop to think what the EU or Europeans are going to do about it, they wonde what will be the US response? What will Americans think?

When they surrendered to Hitler without a fight...that's when. We lost many of our English brothers and sisters when that happened and only by a miracle did many survive. So screw the french and they're p***Y ways.
It wasn't without a fight. 90,000 French soldiers were killed in the blitzkreig, and another 200,000 were seriously wounded. Most of the army was trapped in bypassed defensive positions on the Maginot line or with the British Expeditionary Force in Belgium. The British suffered about 70,000 casualties in the same conflict, before they were able to escape at Dunkirk.

Monique complains its dirty. Martha washes it. Monique complains it too large. Monique gets a different bowl. Martha continues to complain about the first bowl. Fr. My biggest surprise with the entire fiasco was that it was shocking to see a Frenchman fight back.
Then, I realized he was born in Africa, so it probably doesn't really count.
The true test of his Frenchness would have been if the Italian had gotten up and fought back, if he cowered and cried in the middle of the field.

It's funny. Lemond really did beat the last great Frency cyclist, Hinot, but the French seem to like him ok. They liked him ok when he raced and they still seem to have no issue with him. I really don't understand what the issue is with Armstrong and the French. I figure he was doping, but .... so's everyone else. Lemond's bitch with Armstrong is that Lemond is that Lemond was very possibly a better cyclist.

Come in France and see by yourself if we are all stupid and antiamericans...Remember the hatred that we received by fox news and co when the france didn't follow Bush. It doesn't mean that we are happy when an US soldier is wounded or killed. I respect all people , american, iraqi... and each victim is a drama.
I'm profondly disapointed cause I truly respect a lot your country and what you've done in WWII. And immense majority think like me. I invite you to come in normandy in june to see if the french don't remember what americans soldiers payed for our liberty. We lost wars yes and we won some... but now we think that war is a failure, sometimes necessary but a failure. We had war on our soil a lot of time and we payed the cost, it's enough.

Exactly. I don't understand the Armstrong thing. Now if Lemond was unpopular, I could sort of see it. But to think that Armstrong uses some substance that Ulrich doesn't .... I just don't see that. Armstrong won more tours and dominated his era as much as any other cyclist. I don't see why he should be disliked as much as he seems to be.
With bushii and iraq. We seem to forget the French offered 10K troops and money if we got that second UN sec council resolution. But they wanted long term nation building, and bushii was convinced the iraqies would all love chalabi as their new jefe. Wrong. But it's really more than that. Johnny Depp was right when he said somehting about America being a very large, very young dog with large teeth. But I think what makes Americans angry is that they think that the US put forth more effort per man/dollar/franc/euro to defend against aggression than other countries do. And that's probably correct, though the counter is that our lifestyle has been so affluent because other countries LEND us their money cause they see us as stable and able to protect their money, but we don't like to face that. And the French make the most obvious targets cause they're not into being "americanized" in food and culture.
You have by far the nicest county to cycle I've yet seen, and people were most always nice to me, esp when they saw a bicycle. I don't know that I'd want to cycle it alone now though, not in the political climate. Drunk English louts were fairly dangerous, but with a few incidents, people in France didn't want to kill me for being an American.

Your opinion is an opinion and about as relevant to American's as French politics. Because, as I have stated, the French and indeed, most of Europe, just doesnt matter. They believe that they are somehow important, but, in the end, just some posturing appeasers who, in their long and self-important history have done nothing but cause trouble. Indeed, the world in which we live today is a direct result of the failures of the European governments and their people on a global scale. The Middle East's current state of affairs is a direct result of the failures of European policy and failed colonialism in the early and mid parts of last century.
Where does America fit in? Same place it has for the last century, fixing the mistakes of European elitists.
Yet, we are the bad guys to Europe.
As I said, **** Europe. Self-indulgant pricks. Leave the world a mess and expect us to clean it up then criticise when we do.

I've traveled in Europe some, have had French People live in my home, and my grandfather was a medic in the 101 in WWII. I don't form my opinion from a completely uninformed pov.
After my last trip to Mexico, where I made the mistake of staying in a resort apparently popular with French, I decided the most annoying noise in the world, is a kid whining, in French...and the fat, speedo laden father, trying to appease him.

To think there wasn't Nazi collaboration is naive. When the allies invaded Vichey France (southern coast area that was basically a puppet state administered by French), it wasn't sure that the French wouldn't actually fight for the Germans...they actually started to and some shots were fired, but they quickly surrendered.

What are you talking about? People surrender all the time in wars "without firing a shot" when the choice becomes surrender or die. They're called POWs. American soldiers surrender on occasion, too, when their situation becomes periless. The idea that the French just rolled over for Hitler is wrong. They were overwhelmed by a better army that caught them off guard.

French give us more intel on terrorism than any other country, and they continue to be our best ally and source in this war.
They still have made pubic effort to sway the EU to work against the US on many world affairs, had their hands dirty in the Oil for Food in Iraq, along with Russia Germany, who ironically all 3 opposed US efforts and were willing to overlook the fact that US planes were regularly fired on for a decade.
As for being an ally, in some aspects I think that is true, but they're also quick to sell alot of military armament, tanks, fighters(snicker) to unfriendlies.
I also don't appreciate the irony of French looking down their nose at US foreign policy, when they've had a major part of the disfunction in West Africa and about everywhere else they've colonised.
I'll never forget reading of the disrespect shown to our fallen soldiers graves and comments of having them removed from French soil.

Indeed, since we bailed them and the rest of Europe out of two ****ing world war's, we have been looked down upon by all of Europe except Britain.
We matter, that piece of **** half-assed, fag praising, muslim loving terrorist harboring ****ty ass decadent society across the pond does not matter. Not to anyone but themselves.

They still surrendered and didn't fight like they said they would and turned their back on their allies. They rolled over indeed

On Iraq ... damn, it's a pain when your potus gets .... well I can't use that word anymore ... by chirac, but, well, it sucks when the French are right (-:
This is the part that's just drop dead funny. They were right all along.

We cant hate the Germans anymore. Cool cars, great food, better beer, most speak english when visiting Germany (had a great time there) and hot babes that like us Americans. How could we hate? We are a forgiving country....just not for those quitters. And it goes back farther than Iraq. French didnt let US planes fly over France from Germany during the Beirut bombings. They are a bunch of Socialist softies who forget the history that saved their country. Plus, I am sure many American guys lost their date from some smooth talking frenchy. How can u compete with that language with the ladies?

Actually, I do not find the language that appealing when spoken by a guy, but I love it when a girl speaks it :)
