The US is expected to make significant concessions to Russia over the storage of nuclear fuel in order to win backing for foreign policy, reports say.
According to newspapers including the Washington Post, the US is keen to get Russia's support as it tackles concerns including Iran and North Korea.
President George W Bush is due to meet with Russia's President Vladimir Putin later this week at the G8 summit.
The reported offer signifies a shift in US-Russian relations, analysts say.
On Monday, the Wall Street Journal claimed that the US would have to make a number of concessions because it "needs Russia more than Russia needs the US".
According to the newspaper, as well as lifting a ban on storing spent nuclear fuel, the US was also offering to back Russia's membership of the World Trade Organisation and give Russian companies freer access to US markets.

Well Russia has more gas and oil then the US produces so we are in their back pocket for the time being.

At present, the US controls the nuclear fuel it produces, and retains that control even if it has sold it to another nation such as South Korea or Taiwan.
That means that even when the nuclear fuel is used up and needs to be disposed of, client nations of the US cannot transfer it to Russia because of the US ban in place.
The US has stopped Russia from handling its nuclear fuel because of concerns about security and the way in which Moscow provided technology to other nations including Iran.
A main concern is that the nuclear waste could be used to provide radioactive material for weapons.
Another idiotic BushCo proposal that rivals the UAE ports deal.
Hey, Dim Son, I have a better idea: Track down all the billions that have gone missing in Iraq and from the pentagon if you need to raise cash that bad.

You gotta give something to get something I guess, and we need Russia right now, especially for the Iranian thing.

If we have to give them something, then why does it have to be something they can use for weapons that could end up in Iran?

Amen. I am getting really scared about it. The Russians still havent signed the paperwork and there is no talk on the issue at all. I'm on the edge. I'm definitely worried about it.

No, I think we're lifting the maximum nuclear WASTE requirement ...

I think we were ready to endorse them for the WTO under clinton even, so that's not a big deal either.

Dude, this is serious business.
The hearts and minds of Western Pennsylvania hang in the balance.
I am shocked at your lax attitude about the IIHF Transfer Agreement.
We can't let the Ruskies win.
George W. Bush should get off his duff and get Putin on the phone. There needs to be a summit meeting on this.

Well I think the whole situation is ironic, we go through an arms race, now its like we are going through a disarmement race, who is the first to not have to weapons to destroy the world lol its kinda funny.

i agree with you. this is a bad move. bush is in a bind and doesn't know what to do.
the writing on the wall is there - russia is working in a back handed effort with iran. russia is only concerned about russia, and iran being a thorn in our side only helps her cause.

Also, did you ever wonder how those depleted uranium munitions we're using in Iraq are made?
