View Full Version : Nominate two mods

Rascal

Since it's been mentioned, and something that I thought was a good idea, what if the people that participate in this forum nominate two mods, one from both sides of the isle, to be the moderators. Then after collecting the nominations we have a vote?

So post who you think should be a mod (one from each side of the isle please), and if you feel like doing so provide a short reason why.

If your name is mentioned, and you don't want to even be considered, please say so.

In my opinion, you don't have to have a moderator for each side of the aisle. One person who can stay above the fray and make sure things don't get out of hand is enough. We have excellent moderators already, but I'm not sure if they want to watch over the politics forum. If a current moderator is willing, I'm all for that...

Where does having a liberal and a conservative leave those of us who don't fit onto a 1-D ideology scale?

This is assuming that none of our current mods would desire to do so on a full time basis...and based on their comments I think that's pretty much a done deal.

I thougth two people from each side would work the best that way you can't claim that a mod known to be on one side is impossing their own agenda. If a republican gets punished from a republican moderator, they and their supporters don't have much of a leg to stand on as opposed to being punished by a democrat.

elsid is a good idea ... I think the mod should be apolitical, at least when he's cruising the threads doing his work. And I think some fairly hard and fast rules should be posted.

For example...

These 16 words cannot be used: xx, xx, xx,

No asterisk words allowed. eg: ****ing

No references to another poster's family

Or whatever works. I know, I know .... you'll all say "we cant have hard and fast rules, BroncoBuff!" I disagree. Tell us where the lines are - as brite as possible. If it's an innocuous mention of, say, Blueflame's sister's band - then that's obviously not a violation, and a good mod will realize this.

PLUS .... and this is KEY: All complaints should be public. Nobody likes the kid who tattles in secret to teacher after the other kids have gone home. If you have a beef - stand up and make it.

Maybe a sticky thread called "WRP Beefs"

That's exactly the contradiction that got me so hot in the first place ... that started this little crusade. There's lots of stuff on the main board - but they have a MODERATOR to ride herd (heck, even the 'PhotoShop' room has a moderator!)

When the cat's away .... all us mice get freaky . . .

That is the biggest problem. There are two sets of rules. There really should only be one and they should apply to everybody. And anybody violating them should recieve a mandatory 30 day bannishment.

I think the problem is sometimes...emotions run high..and rather than discussing something...two enities are flingging crap at each other. This can potentially be a problem for the owner of the website. So don't get uppity with TJ when he says there needs to be rules of engagement. The reason this works at all for these types of discussions is because we aren't in each others presence. But typically...WRP type topics don't do well with live company. Make an effort to be good natured even when you disagree with another.

Remember...the secret to working with another is to at times be able to tell the other to go to hell...but make them feel good about the trip.

I don't want to be a Mod, not that anyone nominated me anyway. It would conflict though with my dislike of power over others. I have too much ego to drop the hammer to fast on some people.

I have tried nudging people here and there to be more polite with their posts in terms of citing sources instead of a 42 page post, and have been refuted on 'merits of free speech'.

But it's those people who are the reflections of why and how, as a whole this is where we are at. This is an abstract outline of what exists as a whole. This is a microcosm of much more than politiks bored (to me anyway).

I use this as a tool for me - and i try to keep it somewhat civil. I know some of you think i swing one way and the others think i swing another.

I do loose my paitence though when people operate on fear. I don't understand fear. I don't, it's hard for me to understand how people get so scared.

Maitre D: You know, Maria, I sometimes wonder whether we'll ever
discover the meaning of it all working in a place like this.

Maria: [shrugs] Oh, I've worked in worse places... philosophically
speaking.

Maitre D: Really, Maria?

Maria: Yes... I used to work in the Academie Francaise
But it didn't do me any good at all...
And I once worked in the library in the Prado in Madrid,
But it didn't teach me nothing, I recall...
And the Library of Congress, you'd have thought would hold
some key...
But it didn't. And neither did the Bodleian Library.
In the British Museum I hoped to find some clue,
I worked there from 9 till 6 - read every volume through,
But it didn't teach me nothing about Life's mystery...
I just kept getting older, and it got more difficult to see.
Until eventually me eyes went and me arthritis got bad,
And so now I'm cleaning up in here - but I can't really be
sad,
Cause you see I feel that Life's a game
You sometimes win or lose,
And though I may be down right now
At least I don't work for Jews...

I think we set up a rotating pool of mods with limited powers- they only freeze out posters from posting on the WRP forum for about 2 hours. And the kick out both parties involved, it takes two to tango. That should give everyone a chance to cool down.

AGREED. The guys you mentioned all have a sense of humor which to me is what is sorely missing from this type of forums.

Amesj has been here since dirt and would be great. I actually cannot think of a single poster outside of Mock who I would not want to see as a Mod.

I think there should be three to five mods so that they can, by committee decide which things can be put up for vote. The fact that members actively want to support this place makes that a logical extension. A third party Mod would be a nice change of pace. Believe it.

I think there should be elections for Mods every so often so this place does not become prominently one sided red or blue. Why not let this place reflect the vaunted process we respect?

I think that TJ should proud that people are willing to fight for their freedom of speech.

1. You need to have a seperate post count to identify who really posts here. I think it would be interesting number to have on hand. Use Access

2. Subdivide the forum. There should be a place for news as well as ideas because right now the forum lives and dies on talking trash. Create a trash free section where you just cut paste pending legislation and ideas FOR something instead of lighting everything on fire. Leave the rest for gossip and what not. This is the perfect place for Amesj type news clipping

3. Create a mod forum where the mods can ideas can be discussed, voted on, and stored historically. This way guys can pick up laundry list items as needed or problems with the forum can be addressed. I could be as simple as a sticky.

Politics is a part of our daily bread. Why not create one of the better politics forums out there?

So are we going to do this or what? Although TJ may not give the chosen mods all of the power of regular mods, I believe this is something that shows we are being part of the solution. I think that a trio of mods would be a good idea. Somebody put up a poll at a specified time for the period of one week and we will take the three highest vote counts.

On a side note I believe that those who are voted in as mods will have one of the best eye opening experiences. I think that you end up being more critical of those views that you agree with, and a little more open minded to those views you do not agree with.

Now good luck to the candidates and everyone do their civic duty and vote. At least I might not feel like I just was slimed after coming out of the voting booth on this one.

What exactly would TJ do if we elected mods and voluntarily abided by their decisions?

The Second Rule is that the greatest harm can result from the best intentions. It sounds a paradox, but kindness and good intentions can be an insidious path to destruction. Sometimes doing what seems right is wrong, and can cause harm. The only counter to it is knowledge, wisdom, forethought, and understanding the First Rule. Even then, that is not always enough. [...] Good intentions, being kind, can encourage the lazy, and motivate sound minds to become indolent. The more help you give them, the more help they need. As long as your kindness is open-ended, they never gain discipline, dignity, or self-reliance. Your kindness impoverishes their humanity.

As a mod, I would work for even more freedom, fewer restrictions and rules, and less intervention by Big Brother here.

Conservatives would hate it.

So would college lefties.
