Hopefully this can sustain some momentum. Here's my first submittal

Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang
Starring Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr. and Michelle Monaghan(hawt)

This movie is along the lines of Snatch and Pulp Fiction. You do need to suspend belief at times in this movie but its a fun ride with quick humor, pop violence and a rapid pace. Downey Jr. plays a thief-turned-wannabe actor-posing as a PI. Kilmer is the PI that Downey Jr. is paired with to follow around and "learn" the PI and detective business. Kilmer's charactor "Gay" Perry is dry, funny and quite the badass despite the "I will survive" ringtone. Downey is part dumbass, part smartass and yet maintains a very human quality. Monaghan plays an aspiring actress that is Downey Jr.'s long time love interest...basically the gal he grew up that bangs everyone but him. They reconnect in LA.

I highly recommend this film, it's funny, whitty, fast paced and well written and filmed.

Devil Wears Prada~

Loosely based upon the Lauren Weisberger. I read the book prior to seeing the movie, and honestly was dissapointed. I know, I know....they can't fit it all, but they changed what the supporting characters occupations were, they changed who Andy lived with...Oh well. I still enjoyed the movie. One bright spot in the movies was some eye candy offered in the form of Adrien Grenier.....hunk of the month! All in all it was a decent movie... 3 out of 5 stars

Pirates 2 (*** out of 4):

Long. Slow starter. Wasted about 20 minutes early in the film, but once it got going, it was pretty good. Great special effects. Not quite as funny as the original.

Superman Returns. (*** out of 4)

It was okay. Mostly a tribute to the Reeves films rather than the modern version of the comic book character.
----------------------------------------
On DVD:

Ultraviolet. (zero out of 4)

I was excited when I saw the trailer for this one, because Milla might be the best action heroine in the business, but I'm glad I didn't pay money to see this in the theatre. It sucked. Don't waste your time withthe DVD either. If you're into that sort of thing Aeon Flux was a much better movie.

When a Stranger Calls (* out of 4)

Don't bother. I don't know why I did.

The Producers (**** out of 4)

I was a big fan of the original Zero Mostel/Gene Wilder version, which I didn't think could be topped, but the modern musical blew me away. I normally hate Will Farrell, but he was outstanding. I watched this thing twice, then went out and bought it and watched it four more times since then.

I saw the Inside Man at the Cheap Theatres.

It was pretty good. I usually dislike Spike Lee movies but this one was pretty good.

The justs of it is a recently married women, questions her sexual oreintation for another women. It was a decent movie, and no boys...there was no sex scene between the two women, just kissing.

Wow...I actually got out of the house to see a movie this evening....

You, Me and Dupree

** out of 4

Wait for this one on video. This was a man chick flick. Yeah, sounds kinda weird, I know...but, it really was. There were definite funny parts, but the previews showed you most of them. I tried to like it...I really wanted to love it...but, I just didn't. I guess I was expecting another version of wedding crashers. This one just doesn't cut it!

For a rental try The Three Burials of Malquiades Estrada.

One of those quirky movies where both the characters and the scenery will stay with you for awhile.

Syriana - depressing realism.

(Gotta watch it again as I missed a few scenes while playing board games with my best friend's kid.)

A Scanner Darkley

Hard to follow and some things are left unexplained, but the plot twists and unique approach makes it respectable. I thought it was a decent flick, but as my wife said it was "sensory overload". I missed a lot because it is complex, but I won't watch it again either to figure it out. I give it 2 1/2 out of 5.

Don't know if anyone noticed it but Regal Theaters (including United Artists and Edwards) are going ahead with their conversion to digital format. Film will be going away and quality of picture and sound will increase dramatically. Opens the door for other entertainment at theaters.

Memoirs of a Geisha. **** out of 4.

Not the most fascinating plotline, but a visual masterpiece. Interestingly enough, they "updated" and "westernized" some of the makeup and costumes in order to appeal to a more modern audience. Normally, you'd think this would ruin the film, but they pulled it off very effectively. Also filled with superb acting by everyone in the movie.

Anyone see My Super-ex Girlfriend? It looked pretty funny, like it would be so bad it was entertaining. However, now I hear its just bad, and a romantic comedy to boot (UGH!) The idea is pretty good, I would think it would be hard not to make it into a good flick. However, making it a romantic comedy would do that...

Just saw Cars....a decent movie, Hayden liked it, and that's what counts. Take your kids to see it, teaches a good lesson.

I was bored last Friday and went and saw Clerks 2, Lady in the Water, My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Clerks 2 was OK but not a must see, Kevin Smith is the lord of the fanboy auidence but he has been losing cred with me...this film really felt like a ending, and he threw in everything that Hollywood tells you not too, racial stuff and beastiality...I'm not kidding if you are faint of heart walk away, I would give it a 3 out of 5.

Lady in the Water...uhh, I wouldn't recomend you to watch this if it was on cable, M Night is letting his hype go to his head, his last film and this one SUCK! I walked out of this one and snuck into My Super Ex.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend...I didn't think this was going to be good at all but I was really suprised, not really a chick flick just a good comedy for guys and girls, it deals with some adult stuff so I don't think I would take any kids to this that were under 13, no nudity or F bombs but certain situations might be hard to explain to little ones. 3.5 out of 5.

Of those three, super-ex is the only one that sounded good. Uma seems to get all the good roles these days.

This was an excellent film. Tommy Lee Jones and Barry Pepper are both rock solid and the movie remains pretty unpredictable throughout. Lots of dark humor.

Clerks 2 had me rolling. Maybe it's because I relate to the "30-something going nowhere" mentality. You're right about the ending. It's one of the few endings these days that doesn't suggest there will be more movies to follow...

Went and saw Miami Vice. It was dark and dirtier then the TV show, but modern yet still connected to it's TV base (driving Crockett's car and looking straight ahead, modern clothes yet still distinctive Miami Vice, blurry line between cop and criminal). The ending was good, although I had a vague feeling that they left it slightly untied in order to leave the idea of a sequel open.

I give it 6.5 out of 10 stars...worth the price of admission.

FYI...The wife didn't like it though. I had to explain some of the minor plot details and several times we had a hard time understanding Farrell and Gong.

Rented Jarheads on Saturday.

Meh ... 1 star. Too much stressing, too little action.

Also rented Legend of Zorro.

Meh ... 2 stars out of 4. Had some funny moments, but most of them belonged to the horse, if that says anything.

This movie is awesome:

This wonderful film is based upon the short story, "Walk Well, My Brother", which appears in an anthology of short stories titled, "The Snow Walker", written by Canadian icon, Farley Mowat. The story takes place somewhere near the Artic in 1953 and opens with a shadowy figure traipsing slowly across a frozen wasteland. The film then flashes back to a time three months earlier in a settlement called "Yellow Knife", located somewhere in the Northwest Territories of Canada. A raucous sort of place, the viewer is introduced to a young and handsome, former World War II fighter pilot named Charles Halliday (Barry Pepper). He is a free living, arrogant, hot dogging young gun, who now flies over the frozen wastelands of the far north, working as a bush pilot for a man named Shepherd (James Cromwell).

While making a routine delivery in a desolate area, he is met by a small family of Inuit with a seemingly tubercular daughter (Annabella Piugattuk)) who clearly needs medical attention. They request that Johnny take her to the hospital in Yellow Knife but Johnny refuses to do so. When they bribe him with some valuable ivory tusks, he has a change of heart, taking the young woman on board. Unfortunately, the small aircraft experiences technical difficulties, and they crash in the frozen tundra, a couple of hundred miles from civilization, but are physically relatively unhurt by the crash.

Thinking that he would do better on his own, Charlie divests himself of the young woman, leaving her with some supplies but believing that he is consigning her to her death. He is a young man with little respect for the Inuit people. He simply does not see the value in their culture, which he does not understand, and marches off into the bleak wilderness on his own. He, who is a whiz with machinery, has little knowledge on how to survive in that bleak but beautiful wasteland. Consequently, by the time he is about a week into his trek through this unforgiving tundra, he is overcome by nature and the vicissitudes of this harsh and alien environment. Fortunately for him, the young woman he left behind is far more resourceful than he is. She catches up with him, finding him on the brink of death, and nurses him back to life, becoming the key to his survival.

It is only after all this happens that he bothers to learn that she is called Kanaalaq. Slowly, he learns to connect with this young woman in a way that he has never connected with anyone. He learns to appreciate her, discovering that she is beautiful both inside and out. Through his relationship with Kanaalaq, whom he begins to regard as a little sister, he learns how to love another human being, becoming reborn as a better person in the process. He also learns to connect to the land and, in doing so, finds the strength to survive his ordeal. Kanaalaq ends up giving Charlie Halliday the gift of life.

What happens to Charlie and Kanaalaq, how they manage, and how their relationship develops is at the heart of this film. It is the story of two cultures that come together and seamlessly mesh in order to survive out on the frozen tundra. It is an intensely moving and deeply personal film that is simply beautiful. With a minimum of dialogue, this film sends out a major message.

Barry Pepper is terrific in the role of Charlie Halliday, a flawed human being who manages to overcome his shortcomings and become all the better for his ordeal. He infuses the character with a certain charisma, so that when his shortcomings become apparent, the viewer does not dislike him but, rather, hopes that he will see the error of his ways and find redemption. Newcomer Annabella Piugattuk is simply sensational, giving a well-nuanced and very touching performance in the role of the dying Inuit girl, Kanaalaq. Her role is central to the film, and she is a breakout star. They searched for six months, until they found her, having auditioned hundreds of young women in the process, as they were looking for someone indigenous to the area to fill the female lead. The casting director discovered her at a local teen dance in the Northwest Territories, and what a find she is.

This Canadian production was the recipient of numerous Genie nominations, which are the Canadian equivalent of Academy Award nominations, and are conferred by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. I have to say that, in recent years, I have been mightily impressed with the originality, quality, and sophistication of Canadian films. They are sometimes simply the best films to be found. This one is no exception. Deftly directed by Charles Martin Smith, who is also an actor, he fully understands the concept that less is oftentimes more and exacts powerful performances from the entire cast. Moreover, he perfectly captures the majesty, beauty, and sheer bleakness of the landscape that acts as the backdrop for this beautiful story. Bravo!
