I suggest you practice on your own time to get used to it also free it up with play action. ;D

Play as the Broncos in I-Form, "Bell Blast" is a great running play, just sit back and wait for the hole. Switch up the direction once in awhile by pushing the right analog stick left or right at the line of scrimmage.
On defense, play a lot of 4-3 Over and blitz Ian.

You'll also find that kids find one little weakass play and exploit it over and over. They rarely play with actual football smarts and go with video game smarts. Just once, I'd like to grab one of those little ****s and explain to him why you'd run play action on 1st down after I ran on him the last two in the series. Or how a quarterback can't really run 30 yards backwards and huck a bomb over his shoulder. Or how a coordinator would never stack all of his LBs on the left side of the line just to crash it.

So .. i have and played more madden over the last 20 years then anyone should ... im 38 and 7 online sence getting my 360 in june ... i was 142 and 26 on reg xbox ... and glitch free thank you .. and 0 no hud .. cuz thats for pussies ... and get this ... I PUNT ... yes that right folks ... unless losing in the 4th ... i punt ...
so .. onto plays .... O ..... now thats theres a glitch in madden that allows others person to know what play "run or pass" you are running IF OUTA I formation in xbox and i think ps2 ... "not sure about 360" i stay away from it ... its a black white glitch ... "on xbox" Hbs one color its a run .. the other a pass.... so avoid anything thats a straight I ... offsets is FINE and KILLER...
so ... offset i .... i single back ... anything you want ... AND DIVE plays ... the keys not to lose yards.... anything thats downhill .. run it to death .... 2 yards-4 most of time ... twice a game its 80....
theres a formation 2wr 2 back 1 te ... FB starts at a wrs spot and can be motioned to his FB spot i do that and run some dives and spreads then do the motion of the FB to his fb spot and pass later and its butter ....
single back BIG .... counter looking run and same play outa a single back formation to mix in a change in run looks ....
OK passing ... WR option routes are almost unstoppable .... theres one outa 2 wr same side of field with fb offset WEAK ... outside wr is the OPTION inside runs a slant over middle and they are both open all day .. my fav play
but theres LOTS of wr option plays pretty much run them all so cant key on my fav....
but i rarely take a deep shot like 2 a game let ASh go long ... pass cone on rod then change it to the dep route ... they hate that ...
D ..... key ... nothing long .... i MOSTLY play d's that have man to man on every possiable ball catcher ... and MLB'er in a zone "free to cover whoever i sence is money route" AND BE THE MLB ..so its mostly cbs all man ... FS zone over top to double long ... mlb in zone covering middle and QB running ...
2wr ... 4-3 DE contain ... <<< lots of that verse 2wr ... its the mlb in zone ...
2 wr or 3wr ... 3 3 6 ... this thing really messes with people .... theres DE contain in it same as 4 3 .. and lots of man coverages with mlb in zone ...
3 wr or more ... quarter ... its like man spy or something like that ... man to man very wr + mlb in zone ....
basically i win cuz of my D .... its friggen stellar win alot of 21 3 ...games... but i can shoot it out if need be ... most people online have 3 plays ... and once they cant get deep on me most just quit .. lol ... and i can run vs 8 in box and pass vs quarter ... so practice my children of the pony .... LOLOL
i have no job ... a trust fund and lots of electronics ... maddens all i got :O( .... but listen and beat the HELL outa those glitchen 3 play running fools ...

We have it on PS2 and xbox 360, but mostly play on 360. On PS2 I could at least fumble through what I was doing. What he does is throws this 97 yard pass for a touchdown...like every other play he has the ball....i'm lucky if I don't get sacked!

That's why I love playing against my son and cousins. I can play some awesome defense
So I will let them burn me on a couple of plays and then the rest of the game that's what they use but I either intercept it or hold them 4 & out most of the game.
Running play action is awesome for a defense as well.....I am not the chiefs and bite on it. Just send 1 to the QB all game rgardless if it's a run and your d behind you will do the rest.

First of all, there is no reason he should have those 80 yard bombs all the time.. Which difficulty do you play on? If it's anything less than All-Pro you need to change it up. The artificial intelligence of the computer players just isn't good enough to keep up on rookie or pro.
Hey TDMVP, do you play on Xbox Live? I'd like to play you some time. I took my lumps coming up but i'm level 20 now, 180-93. Consider it more of a learning experience for me than me trying to challenge you. I have thought about scripting my first 8-10 plays myself! Of course that's the Shanahan influence.
The one thing i don't understand, is this thing about the black/white glitch.. Just what is black or white? Are you talking about the skin color of the back? I run the straight I alot and no one has really stopped me to the point where i thought something was fishy...
Anyway, my gamertag is Steve7268, add me if you'd like.

LOLOL no no no ... the black white glitch ... refering to the 2 small buttons on xbox ... the hb in i formation is normally those colors if you look pre play ... and the D can see those colors pre snap ... and can see them change colors even if you auditiable from one to other ...
its basically CHEAP programming and crap beta testers who missed a flaw in the game more then a glitch .... not sure if its in the 360 version ... but its in reg xbox for sure and pretty sure its in ps2 but i dont have it to conferm ...

I never got Madden 06, but I played Madden 05 alot online, and it's pretty simple.
First thing you have to remember is alot of these kids don't do much of anything but play Madden. They have no jobs, no kids, no responsibilites and as a result they are GOOD. Get a kid that plays peewee football and has a little football knowledge and you can really have your hands full.
Like Rulon and TD mentioned, when those younger kids find a weakness, they won't let up. The trick I learned is you have to adjust, but don't over-adjust. I've seen many people drop all their defensives back deep, only to get gouged by the run and short passes.
Offense: I base most of my plays out of the Normal I-Formation, using audibles, hot routes and motion to keep them guessing. The I-Formation is pretty versatile, but use single back, empty backfield and shotgun too.
1) Use alot of motion, this tends to confuse them. Especially when you motion a WR in as an extra blocker
2) Counters and play action work well against younger kids
3) Run draws from Shotgun and single back formations (anything that screams "obvious pass")
4) Use the HB Screen in the standard shotgun formation. I use Tatum or Q, when he was on my team, for this play. You'll have 2-3 linemen and a couple WR blocking for you, and once you get past the OLB it's usually a footrace down the sideline. I would always be disappointed if this play gained less than 25 yards.
5) There is a play in standard I formation called "Deep Cross" with the TE running a slant to the weak side of the field. Audible for the #1 WR (on weak side) to run a fly. Take Plummer and bootleg to the weak side and hit the TE. The #1WR will usually take both the corner and safety deep while the LB is in pursuit. This play is an easy 15-25 yards, sometimes more.
6) In 5 WR shotgun, there is a play called "FL Fly." You will have 3 WR on one side, and 2 WR on the other side. On the side with 3 WR, the WR closest to the tackle will run a slant towards the middle of the field and then cut straight back towards the sideline, I like to use the small/fast receivers like Triandos Luke for this one. Audible the 2 WR on the opposite side to run fly patterns. When you snap the ball, bootleg to the sideline the receiver is going to run to, as soon as he makes that cut, toss him the ball. He will usually be covered by an OLB and will simply out run them while having 20 yards of open field.
7) Also in Normal I-Formation is PA (play action) FB Flat. The 2 important things on this play are the fullback and the WR running the deep route. When you snap the ball, the QB will fake a handoff to the FB, who will run out into the flat. On the strongside, the side that the FB is going to run to, the WR there (#2 WR I believe) is going to run the deep pattern. Bootleg to the strongside, and if that WR is not open, dump it off to the FB in the flat.
Defense: I switch up between the 4-3 and 3-4 defenses. Defense is much easier than offense.
1) 90% of my defensive plays are the "2 Man Under" play, available in just about every formation. It's a basic play with the D-line rushing, the LBs and Corners on man assignments, and the safeties playing the deep zone. I like this play because I can keep the safeties in the zone, assign them to double coverage or blitz them. I can pretty much use this play for most of my defensive snaps.
2) I find the edge sting to be the most effective blitz.
3) If you have a younger, not so football smart opponet, don't be afraid to take chances and do things that don't make sense. More than once, I've made a big play by going into a quarter defense on 1st down and sending 2 or 3 of the extra corners on a blitz. That stuff will really throw off someone who doesn't know football all that well.

Also I forgot to add this.
When you are on offense, what the defensive player's habits and take advantage of his adjustments. For example lets say you are burning your opponet deep on every pass play, chances are he will back up his DB's and dare you to pass. In that situation, I'd use short slants and crosses, working the middle of the field.
9 times out of 10, those kids will make extreme changes and create another huge weakness.

I play it on reg xbox, i cant lose to the computer. I create some players and put on my team, but running is easy just use blast plays on first or second downs. Pass on third downs if its long, run inside traps, outside. Use the hit stick to run fools over. I love playing the da faders and running them over and knocking them out of the game.

Spread the defense. 4 wideouts, and 1 running back, and you'll be able to run for long plays.

Run up the middle for a good 4 yards for about 5-6 plays in a row then hit him with a play action pass for a big gain. One of the basic strategies of Madden.

People are making it too difficult for you. Here's the easiest way to improve in hurry...
1. Follow your lead blocker.
Just like the real game, following your blockers makes a huge difference. Use any I formation play, for example. Snap the ball, hand off and follow the exact path your lead blocker takes. Try to make it exact... trail him. Hold off on the speed until you get to the hole. Following that blocker's exact path will open it up for you.
2. Sideline patterns.
Shotgun formation, 5 wide, scroll until you find a formation with Watts in the slot. (He'll be the "L" button.) Look for the pattern where he runs about 10 yards straight, then makes an angle towards the (left) sideline. (He'll be lined up on the weak side) Take the snap, wait for him to start into his break, then toss it up to him. Not to hard, but don't lob it, either.
This play is almost impossible to defend when run correctly, and it's not difficult. Using sideline patterns cuts down on your chances for INTs, greatly.
Also sound like he might be stacking the line to stop the run, which means you're going to have to open it up a bit with the pass. Using the shotgun should get him to back off of that, but the blitz will come fast, so just use short patterns and eat up chunks of yardage.
