SAUERBRUN SUSPENDED FOR FOUR GAMES
Two league sources tell us that Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun has been suspended by the NFL for four games, for violation of the league's policy regarding steroids. Sauerbrun, we're told, tested positive for ephedra.
The NFL began testing for ephedra after the death of Vikings offensive lineman Korey Stringer. As Mike Freeman (then of the New York Times) explained in 2003, team lawyers contended in defending against a wrongful death lawsuit that ephedra was a factor in Stringer's demise; Stringer's family denied that ephedra played a role in his passing.
Last year, Sauerbrun was identified as a recipient of steroids from Dr. James Shortt during Sauerbrun's stint with the Carolina Panthers. Sauerbrun told the AP in October 2005 that the stigma regarding the steroid issue "won't go away as long as I'm in the NFL."
An 11-year veteran, Sauerbrun has punted for the Bears, Chiefs, Panthers, and Broncos. He was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2002, 2003, and 2004, and he is the punter of the PFT 2006 All-Turd Team.
It's not known at this point whether Sauerbrun has exhausted any available appeals, which could delay the implementation of the suspension.
The other punters on the Broncos' roster are rookie Jeff Williams of Adams State and Tyler Fredrickson of Cal, who is listed as a punter and a kicker. Look for the team to add a veteran punter who'll be able to handle the chores if/when Sauerbrun serves his four-game sit, and possibly beyond.

Hasnt ephedra/psuedoephedra been banned by the FDA nationwide? It was the weight lose supplement a few years ago but I think it was determined that the drug caused unsafe increases in internal body temp along with dehydrating the user. Couple that with exercise (which is what the users usually do) and that is a lethal dose.

Ephedra is not a steroid but it is a stimulate that is banned under the nfl drug policy. Ephedra was banned by the FDA, however the ban was overturned by a judge in Utah. It is not readily available but I am pretty sure you can now purchase it legally.

PRO FOOTBALL; Some Flout N.F.L.'s Ephedra Ban in Off-Season
By MIKE FREEMAN
Published: March 14, 2003
About one month ago, a National Football League offensive lineman stepped onto a scale in his bathroom. The digital numbers kept flipping over and over, like a Las Vegas slot machine, and when they stopped, the player was shocked at what he saw. He had gained a whopping 50 pounds since the season ended in January.
So he began what was an annual battle of the bulge for many N.F.L. players: a fitness program to quickly lose weight for minicamps and summer training camp. The player said his regimen included taking the popular weight loss product Xenadrine RFA-1, a supplement that contains ephedra.
He is among 10 players interviewed recently who acknowledge that they continue to use supplements containing ephedra even though it is banned by the league and despite the health risks attributed to it by doctors and the federal government. A Florida medical examiner said yesterday that significant amounts of ephedra were found in the system of Steve Bechler, the Baltimore Orioles pitcher who collapsed and died last month, and that it contributed to his death.
The N.F.L. offensive lineman said that he had used products containing ephedra for several years and that it was too valuable as a weight loss aid not to use. He said he believed that the chances of being caught by the league were slim.
He is not the only player who feels that way. Nine other players (eight linemen and one running back, on seven different teams) said in interviews that they, too, currently used ephedra products, almost exclusively in the off-season, despite the ban and possible health dangers.
These players say that ephedra use remains high in N.F.L. circles, especially among linemen, because it is viewed as crucial for weight loss and training. The lineman who gained 50 pounds attributed the increase to ''too many banquets and too many desserts'' and said his usual breakfast consisted of about 20 buttermilk pancakes and 12 strips of bacon.
The players, who spoke on condition of anonymity, say they do not fear adverse health reactions because they use the weight loss pills responsibly. They say they do not fear the league's off-season drug testing program, either, because ephedra leaves the bloodstream too quickly for random tests to catch. A positive test can lead to a four-game ban.
Conversely, these players say, they would not use anabolic steroids because those can stay in the system for months, and so it is far easier to be caught.
The players interviewed estimated that before the ban two years ago, 50 percent to 70 percent of all N.F.L. players used products with ephedra. That number, they said, has dropped, but they said they believed that somewhere from 20 percent to 40 percent of players still used it.
Before the N.F.L.'s ban, the Giants' trainer, Ronnie Barnes, estimated that 75 percent of the team used ephedra.

A Do-Over
Now Healthy, Ernster Relishes Second Shot at First Impression After Knee Surgery
By Andrew Mason
DenverBroncos.com
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The topsy-turvy nature of Paul Ernster's rookie campaign in the National Football League was encapsulated by an odd four-week stretch in September that defined his status heading into the upcoming camps.
In less than a month's time, he made the 53-man roster, played in the regular-season opener at Miami as a kickoff specialist, was waived and re-signed to the practice squad and then consigned to injured reserve after tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament in warmups prior to the Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jubilation, anticipation, deflation and frustration, all in one wild month that introduced the seventh-round pick -- who hadn't even been invited to the National Scouting Combine -- to the often-perplexing vagaries of the professional realm.
"It was definitely an interesting season," Ernster recalled. "It was something that I can learn a lot from, to go back and see what I did wrong and see what I can do better next time."
In Week 1, he sent a kickoff flying out of bounds that set the Miami Dolphins up at their 40-yard-line for what would become a drive that put the game out of the Broncos' reach.
A week later, he was inactive after tweaking his right knee in pregame warmups prior to a win over the San Diego Chargers. It was a harbinger of what was to come.
"I had a lot of problems with my knee prior to my ACL injury," Ernster said. "It just wasn't right. I think it was on its way out."
Eight days later, after being shifted to the practice squad, it went out completely in the hours leading up to the Broncos' only Monday Night Football game of 2005.
"It was just one of those things where my knee kept getting worse and worse and worse," Ernster said. "Before the injury, it must not have gotten to the level where I needed to have surgery or whatnot, so it was just one of those things that was going to happen either way.
"I feel it gave me a chance to reflect, learn a lot, sit back for a year and figure things out. It's one of those things -- you can't prevent injuries from happening. You can do your best, but that's the nature of this sport; it happens."
It also gave him something many rookies don't receive -- a de-facto do-over of his initial NFL season, this time with the wisdom that comes from a year inside the walls of an NFL facility. Ernster spent the remainder of the regular season rehabilitating from surgery, then remained in Denver for another month beyond the AFC Championship to continue his work.
"In February I went out and I was hitting balls, because the training room said I could go out and lightly strike some balls," Ernster said.
By April, he was able to expand his routine as offseason workouts progressed.
"I began by punting 35 or 40 balls in April and kicking off 10 or 20 times, three times a week," Ernster said. "I didn't really kick that hard, I just wanted to go out and get the swing down."
Ernster's recovery has been steady. It might not have been so had he torn the ACL in his left knee, "because you plant and that puts a lot of pressure on your knee and ACL. It really would have caused me a lot of trouble, but with the right leg, you're really just snapping it through.
"It really hasn't affected me so far."
If anything, it helped him from a motivational standpoint, giving him a quest -- to prove that the errant kickoff at Miami, which remains the only regular-season kick of his career, did not reflect his skills.
"That's kind of what drives me -- is getting out there again and proving to everybody that I can come back from this and be better than I was and prove that I can do it," Ernster said. "It's in the back of my mind every day. You've got to have something that drives you and gets you working hard every day, and that's what it is."

Romanowski said he took illegal steroids for a two-year period starting in 2001 and got them from Conte, the former head of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, which has been at the center of a steroids controversy in several sports.
According to that, he began in his final year in Denver when his career was headed downhill. Looks like he was preparing to join the rest of his BALCO buddies in Chokeland when he started buying the juice from Victor Conte.
How sad, the last time your team was relevant, they were loaded with clients of the most notorious steroid dealer of this era. Again, it's no wonder you're such a staunch supporter of juicers.

The punter was doing roids before he ever got to Denver. Plus, as a kicker, I doubt anyone else (besides Elam) gives him the time of day.
If he is guilty, they should throw his ass out.

Yeah, to me it should be. Any type of pop should be b/c of the carbonation and corn syrup is so bad for you. I just don't think it's worth drinking it. I drank some before my freshmen year of HS football and it killed me so much. I haven't drank one since...
All that corn syrup may not be good for you but the carbonation will just make you burp.

Honestly...I think if it's done with proper medical supervison then it should be perfectly fine. What exactly is a performance enhancing drug? Steroids?....steroids do not build muscle mass....they heal the body so that more weight lifting can he done....but ultimately the weight lifting is what builds the muscle....what's the problem?
With the whole Bonds thing...it's just hypocritcal to call out Bonds when most of baseball has been taking performance enhancers for a long time.

Go away, little girl. Go away, little girl.
I'm not supposed to be alone with you.
I know that your lips are sweet,
But our lips must never meet.
I belong to someone else, and I must be true.
Oh, go away, little girl. Go away, little girl.
It's hurtin' me more each minute that you delay.
When you are near me like this,
You're much too hard to resist.
So, go away, little girl, before I beg you to stay."
(instr) Go away.
(instr) Please don't stay.
(instr) It'll never work out.
When you are near me like this,
You're much too hard to resist.
So, go away, little girl.
Call it a day, little girl.
Oh, please, go away, little girl,
Before I beg you to stay.
Go away.

get your ephedra while you can. if the FDA wants it banned (and they do, to appear that they care about the health and safety of the public), it'll be banned once again, IMO.
really, the supplement is a dinosaur. there are plenty of supplements that have less side effects and close/equal fat burning and thermogenic properties.

its not whether its diet soda or regular. you build muscle by getting the carbon dioxide out of your muscles and the soda just puts that carbon right back in, negating the workout.

I just read the first page. Over the past 4 pages has anybody supplied a link other than PFT? Seeing that it was PFT gave me some relief. They make stuff up all the time. I'm hoping it's not true.
As for ephedra, you can still buy it as a drug, but not as a supplement. I bought a bottle about 6 months ago, and it worked for me. I was at that same supplement store a month ago, and the guy still had some bottles. But he raised the price on it. He said it was because the FDA, or some other group, is making it very hard on the manufacturers. It's costing them more money, so the price has gone up a lot on the stuff.
When used correctly the stuff is safe. But when taking too much of it, then going out and working out in 100+ degree heat, and not drinking water, yeah, you're gonig to be in trouble.

I have to agree with this. I've tried the ephedra free products. It's not even close. When I took ephedra I'd feel that kick. I don't feel the kick on the newer products.
Also, I used to take ephedra when I had a night shift job. I'd always start to nod off around 11 pm. I didn't get off work until 2:30. So I'd take my "Go Time". I'd be wide awake in about 10 minutes. But when I tried the ephedra free products, I had a hard time staying awake.
But I screwed myself up once. I took twice the dosage once. I thought I was just taking one dose. I didn't read the lable correctly. I was shaking like crazy. I was really scared for a minute.

Unless Ernster beats out Sauerbrun, this is going to $uck for the Broncos.
They will have to use an extra roster spot to keep both Sauerbrun and Ernster on the roster. For these 4 games, then they can cut Ernster and bring back a player.
I can't see the Broncos keeping 3 kickers the whole season.

Because now we have to worry about a punter and someone kicking off, two things that have killed us in the past.
It sounds like an over-reaction by the NFL on Ephedra, but nevertheless it also takes a Lame-Brain to first be part of a steroid controversy two years ago that in part got him railroaded out of his old team to then even toy with this stuff knowing its on the questionable list!
Hell Sourpuss, just drink an extra bottle of Jolt if you are looking to lose a little weight or get your mojo going for pete-sake! Chug some green tea each day as well, that will melt some pounds off him.
He really helped pin KCs return game last year and we play them game 2 early in the season when his leg is most fresh.
