We have too many holidays allready, but if the 4th falls on a tuesday or a thursday, I don't see why companies can't just run a skeleton crew. This is easily at least the 3rd most important holiday behind Christmas and Easter IMO. Memorial Day is also very important. Ironically, as a general rule, slaves in the south got two holidays. Christmas and the 4th of July.
I'm a History Channel junkie. Another tidbit: Even tho Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclaimation in 1863, slaves were withheld that information till June of 1865 in eastern Texas when an emmisary from Lincoln arrived. It's still celebrated to this day as Juneteenth in eastern Texas as Independence Day.

I just started a job as a sports writer for a community newspaper. It goes to print every Wednesday. We have to come in today to get all of our stories finished. So I have a lot to do by 5pm. Then I have to go all the way out to the OC to shoot a baseball game. I shot out there all day Saturday and Sunday. Seven games so far, in the baking sun.
I can't wait until tommorow, when I'll finally have a day off.

Yeah. It was actually eight palm trees, but there are two per container. I also had to move several cacti during the excavation process. Landscaping is kind of a hobby for me, but digging out tree roots is about the toughest work around.

I think my biggest beef about working today is not the fact I have to work...it's that I had to come in an hour early, and how they sugar coat things saying if we come in as a team we can all leave once all the price dependent tasks are complete...what they dont say is the last mail run isn't until 2, those tasks won't be scanned until at least 3, so we're not getting off until at least 4. 8')

I'm the boss also and my philosophy is first come first serve. Doesn't matter how long you've worked if you get in and request the time first you get it. I took Friday off and don't go back until Thursday. I needed it. It's slow at work today anyway so shouldn't be a problem.

No days off in insurance if its not a national holiday! We asked on Friday if we had to work today and my boss said, "Why, what's on Monday?" Maybe a half day, who knows. My boss is pretty unpredictable. Half day to him is like 2:30 which is pretty much a whole day because we usually work through lunch. Off to a slow start thus far. I plan on being here till 5:30.

Hey I work tommorow morning so consider yourselves lucky.
I have worked a lot of 4ths in my life. Military and fire fighter, so I didnt get the day off, but it wasnt overally objectionable. The time I had to work the
4th that really pissed me off was in college. I delivered pizza at Pizza Hut and we were open on the 4th. We barely made enough $$$ to justify being open, but since we did make a (very) marginal profit, we were still open. That always rubbed me the wrong way.

A place like Pizza Hut has to stay open, even if it doesn't seem financially viable. Its more about not alienating customers.

btw, when removing bolts from chairs and desks, the key is to remove the nut, and slide the bolt out so it's just barely holding the thing together. Then it adds some suspense to the next day, listening to hear when the bolt slips all the way. Be sure to leave the nut nearby so it looks like it just worked itsway loose.
Another fun trick is for those chairs that have rolling wheels on the bottom. Pull one out, and partially break the little pin that fits into the chair, and then wait and listen for your co-workers chair to break.

I drank too much on the 3rd. Went to bed without socks, so Mrs Dog A. Turned the ac way down or B. hit my plantar with one of my crutches. 5:30 am on the the 4th, I hobbled to the medicine drawer, and found my mobic had disappeared. Mrs. Dog denied any knowledge, but she's lying. Little Girl Dog changed her mind about me driving her to the riding camp she volunteers at, so I coulda slept in, but hey .... Had a new prescrip for mobic, so at 9 am, I drove to the drive up window at Krogers, went over to the gym. Cycled to the Tour, and Sherapova - now THAT's an ass and the other chick coulda strangled me with her thighs - for an hour.
Went back to Krogers, bought chicken to make a casserole for Little Girl Dog's riding teacher, who lost her father last weekend, and a sixer of Red Stripe. Quaffed 3 mobics with a Red Stripe on the way home. I got the floors swept and dried mop. Little Girl Dog vacuumed the rugs for five bucks.
I'm not on crutches, and was gonna cycle instead of jog for the next couple of weeks, so the foot's not a big deal ... so long as I don't stand for more than 15 mins.
Last Saturday I manned the grill and food table at a horse show. 8:30 to 4:00. 108degrees they say. It wasn't too bad cause the guy who is married to the riding teacher and who maintains the farm, had a wind machine thing set up that put out some breeze. But all three of us planned to go home, recline and set the thermostat to 70. It's hot out there.
