NORAD air base on heightened alert
No reason given for 'Bravo-Plus' security level

Posted: July 3, 2006

As the U.S. continues to express concern about the possibility of a North Korean missile test directed toward American territory and the rest of the world holds its breath over a close encounter with an asteroid, several U.S. air bases are on heightened alert.

But no one is talking about why.

The Cheyenne Mountain Air Station, which houses NORAD – charged with monitoring the North Korea situation – is now at "Bravo-Plus."

Other air bases in Colorado, California and Florida are also on heightened alert status.

There are five levels of alert: normal, Alpha (low), Bravo (medium), Charlie (high) and Delta (critical). "Bravo-Plus" is slightly higher than a medium threat level.

The Bush administration has urged North Korea to abandon its plans to test a long range missile. The Pentagon believes the missile is capable of reaching the United States.

NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command in Colorado would play a big role in both detecting and responding to a missile launch if it ever occurred.

The U.S. missile defense system is only a few years old, but could be tested if North Korea chooses to act.

Meanwhile, in a development that may or may not be related to the heightened security alert, an asteroid up to half a mile wide is due to brush past the Earth early today.

Scientists who have been tracking asteroid 2004 XP14 say it will approach almost as close as the Moon, traveling at 10.5 miles per second.

It has been classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA), along with 782 known others.

Initially there were concerns that the asteroid might collide with the Earth later this century. However, further analysis of its orbit has ruled this out - at least for the foreseeable future.

If XP14 did hit the Earth the effects would be devastating.

"It would probably be big enough to wipe out a small country," said Dr David Asher, from the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland.

I believe there has been much of that going on, but I don't get the sense that this is one of those times.

If there were a line to bet on, I'd bet that it's been raised based on a legitimate scenario.

In LABF's world terrorists are just a bunch of Karl Rove clones in an undisclosed studio, North Korea was a magical paradise of fun and joy before Bush, and poverty was created by evil Republicans who eat babies and beat up old people.

No, surely all this military action is just another conspiracy. Yup. All people in the military at all levels are just goons of the evil Republican conspirators and don't really care about this country or defending. Probably just a distraction tactic for the elections. I don't know why we need to do that since we just rig the elections anyway, but logic was never his strong suit.

No doubt you're right... but the timing of the alert (coinciding with the asteroid's relatively close approach) made me wonder... if it actually was going to threaten the earth, would they tell us so... or would they lie? I strongly suspect that our media would lie.

Nah. They wouldn't lie about an asteroid hitting earth. Just think of the ratings they could pull by covering all the panic and chaos the news would stir up. The government on the other hand...

Good point. I'm not too message board savvy, so I dont know how much those types of things make their way into the genre of discussion if there is no outlet, but your conclusion sounds reasonable. I guess that we'd see an inordinate amount of threads gone down in political flames in the butt.

Not really. No one has to put up with that forum if they don't want to. Our Mods are welcome to try to moderate it if they wants to, but I've found that moderating a war and politics forum to be a fruitless endeavor. I'd just as soon let that place moderate itself, up the the point that racial hate speech finds its way into the conversation. Any headaches for mods over there are ones that they create for themselves by deciding that they'd like to try to clean it up. They're welcome to try, but I view it like taking a sand bucket to try to clean up an oil spill. Politics in America is what it is right now, and our forum for it doesn't look any different than any other forum on the subject.

Actually it spills onto the main board because it's the offseason and therefore, non-football topics are allowed on the main board. Once we go into on-season mode, however... as always... a political topic would have to be very, very important to remain here for long.
