The WSOP has begun. Im looking forward to seeing the play in this event.
Wed. 7/12/2006 H.O.R.S.E. (3 day event) $50,000 buy in.
Should be a good one.

on a lighter note, a friend of mine was to play on the $1500 buy in on the 27th. He got piss drunk and pissed away his buy in at the craps table the night before.

Yes, Its still on. I'm hoping to be well on the way to finishing the house by then. I think we will be revising our registry just a little bit. The only real plans that have changed are my playing in the WSOP, will have to wait until next year.

I think I might add this..

A friend of mine from Denver hit a Royal.

Tue Jun 27 13:51:00 PDT 2006
Royal Double Up

Dan Jensen is all in preflop with 10heart10club. He's hoping to find a 10 on the board, but won't complain after the board reads KheartQheartJheartAheart2club. Jensen doubles up to around $1,000 after he hits his Royal Flush.

Helmuth came in 2nd in the 5K NLHE event. Wonder what his excuse was and what he called the winner...

Yep...........

$5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Final Table
The biggest news coming into day 3 revolved around ESPN’s decision not to have a full production crew cover the action. The nine remaining players, each engaging personalities, coupled with Phil Hellmuth’s quest for a tenth bracelet, made for a dream final table, but only one cameraman was on hand to capture the highlights.
With a WSOP bracelet and an $818,546 first place prize on the line, the chip counts coming into the final table were as follows:

1. Quoc Al “Vinnie” Vinh - $784,000 (Seat 1)
2. Phil Hellmuth Jr. - $$461,000 (Seat 9)
3. Marcel Luske - $458,000 (Seat 4)
4. Isabelle Mercier - $301,000 (Seat 2)
5. Jeff Cabanillas - $275,000 (Seat 5)
6. Douglas Carli - $273,000 (Seat 6)
7. Eugene Todd - $240,000 (Seat 3)
8. Thomas Schreiber - $200,000 (Seat 8)
9. Dan Smith - $117,000 (Seat 7)

The first cards hit the air at 2:21 p.m. PDT with $8,000-$16,000 blinds and $2,000 antes.

The fans packed in the bleachers and along the rails, already the largest crowd for a 2006 WSOP final table, needed to wait only one hour before witnessing the first elimination. Danny Smith, the short stack, pushed all in preflop but mucked his hand to Phil Hellmuth after the river. Smith exited the tournament as the ninth-place finisher ($58,468).

Over the next hour, Vinnie Vinh, who brought a massive stack to the final table, lost two key hands to Marcel Luske and Jeff Cabanillas. Left with only $200,000 in chips, Vinh moved all in on a Hellmuth preflop raise. Throughout the tournament both players entertained fans with their spirited table banter and constant heads-up battles, but the love-hate relationship came to an end when Hellmuth made the call. His A 10 held up against Vinh’s K Q and Vinh stormed away from the final table in eighth place ($87,702).

Douglas Carli (seventh place, $116,396) and Thomas Schreiber (sixth place, $146,170) were the next players to be eliminated.

By the 6:20 p.m. dinner break, only four players remained and Isabelle Mercier was not one of them. Her tournament run ended when her K 3 failed to improve against Cabanillas’s pocket eights. The well-known Canadian poker pro finished in fifth place ($175,404).

Crowd favorite Luske, wearing his customary suit and tie, soon followed Mercier to the rails. After losing a big hand to Cabanillas, Luske bet $210,000 preflop, leaving him with only $20,000 in chips. Hellmuth called, and then put Luske all in blind. “The Flying Dutchman” called on the 7 7 4 flop. Hellmuth showed the K 10 and Luske flipped over Q J. The 5 turn and 3 river offered no help to Luske, and he became the fourth-place finisher ($204,638).

As opponents continued to drop and Hellmuth inched closer to tying Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan’s all time WSOP bracelet records, a parade of poker stars gathered along the rails to check in on the “Poker Brat.” Some of the stars who dropped by included Gus Hansen, Joe Hachem, Dave “The Devilfish” Ulliott, Jean-Robert Bellande, Amnon Filippi, and Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, who even took the microphone and called the action for a few hands.

Eugene Todd entered three-handed play with half the chips of either of his opponents. Todd survived 20 minutes before pushing all in on an 8 6 4 2 board with K 8. Cabanillas called, and showed pocket tens. When the 9 came on the river, Todd, the third-place finisher ($233,872), left the table to applause and cheers.

To call the heads-up match between Hellmuth and Cabanillas “David versus Goliath” doesn’t give nearly enough credit to the favored party. The 22-year-old, playing in his first live tournament, and the nine-time WSOP bracelet winner were more like Titanic versus the iceberg.

The crowd stretched seven rows back, and even Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan sat tableside, all to watch Hellmuth make history.

The two players started heads-up action with similar stacks and when Hellmuth built a 2-to-1 chip lead, talk of a tenth bracelet started to spread throughout the Amazon Room. Cabanillas, however, played the underdog role to perfection. He survived Hellmuth’s surge and frustrated the “Poker Brat” by raking a huge pot after spiking a 5 on the river to make two pair.

Hellmuth’s demeanor, and luck, seemed to change after the hand. He lost a number of big pots in a row and his stack slumped below the million-dollar mark.

At 20 minutes past midnight, the $5,000 no-limit hold’em tournament, and Hellmuth’s most recent hope for a tenth bracelet, came to an end. With his stack around $500,000, Hellmuth reraised all in on a 643 flop, and Cabanillas immediately called. Fans swarmed the ESPN stage as Hellmuth flipped up 5 4 and Cabanillas showed 5 3. The 4 turn gave Hellmuth a set, and he was one card away from closing the gap. That last card, however, was the J. Cabanillas’s diamond flush eliminated Hellmuth from the tournament.

Hellmuth earned $423,893 for his runner-up finish. “I would pay a million dollars to win that bracelet,” Hellmuth said as he thanked the crowd, “but that’s not the way the game’s played.”

Cabanillas, surrounded by friends and family, raised his first WSOP bracelet in the air, and celebrated his $818,546 victory.

Holy ****....

Chip Reese entered the final table as the chip leader. He's considered the best all around player in the world and rarely plays tournaments. He's a fixture in the "Big Game" and other high stakes games. He's my favorite to win. Despite not being a tourney player, Reese has two bracelets that he won in 1978 and in 1982. This is his 12th final table at the WSOP.

Doyle Brunson is second in chips and seeking his 11th win. Texas Dolly looked exhausted last night and outlasted me. I took a nap for a while and went back into the Rio while Brunson gutted it out. The guy is a machine. At one point he was 22/24 with just 25K left in chips when he scooped a monster against Patrik Antonius in Razz. He went on a run after that and built up his stack to over $1M.

Andy Bloch is the guy I'm rooting for the most. He's one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. He's been on a tear at this year's WSOP after a disappointing run last year. He cashed four times this year and made his second final table.

Phil Ivey is seeking his 6th bracelet. He's won over 6.3 million playing in tournaments and took second last week when he lost to Sammy Farha heads-up in the $5K Omaha Hi/Lo event. Along with Brunson and Reese, Ivey is a regular in the Big Game.

Jim Betchel is a former framer and a high stakes cash game player. He won the main event in 1993. He's cashed 19 times at the WSOP and made seven final tables.

David Singer made two final tables on the last season of the WPT. He finished 7th at the Mirage Poker Showdown a couple of months ago. He's seeking his first bracelet.

Dewey Tomko had retired from poker for almost a decade to stay at home and raise his kids in Florida. Since his return to the tournament circuit, he's been on a roll. He cashed in two events this year and has made an impressive 20 final tables at the WSOP with three bracelets.

TJ Cloutier is the best player that never won a WSOP main event. He has 6 bracelets and won one last year. The state of Texas has both TJ and Doyle Brunson representing them at one of the most difficult final tables in the history of poker.

Patrik Antonius from Finland is probably the best young up and coming poker players in the world. He's definitely one of the best young players to come out of Europe. I first met Antonius at the EPT in Barcelona. He made the final table and held his own against Gus Hansen, Christer Johansson and Jan Boubli. I watched him bring Patrick Martenson, the Swedish Monopoly champion, to his knees when he ran over him at the final table. Whenever Martenson raised, Antonius re-raised. I was impressive with his play and since then Antonius has been on a rush. He won an EPT event, took second in a WPT event, and cashed twice at this year's WSOP. Too bad Antonius has just 13K in chips with 10K/20K blinds.

Defending WSOP champ Hachem knocked out
Associated Press

LAS VEGAS -- Defending champion Joseph Hachem was knocked out of the World Series of Poker on Saturday night and finished in 238th place.

Hachem, who won $7.5 million last year, went all-in with a pair of aces, but lost to his opponents three of a kind.

At about 12:30 a.m. ET, Jamie Gold was the chip leader with 1.8 million. Alex Balandin was second with 1.5 million, WeiKai Chang was third with 1.35 million and Kyle Bowker was fourth with 1.23 million.

Other pros still in the running for the $12 million top prize were Annie Duke and Allen Cunningham.

Ken Jacobs, son of poker pro Tom Jacobs, had fallen far back in the pack.

The day saw several notables bust out, including pros Daniel Negreanu, Kathy Liebert and Cyndy Violette, and longtime player Hoyt Corkins. None of the remaining players will go home empty-handed. The final 873 players in the tournament are "in the money," meaning they win some portion of the $10,000 buy-in back.

The final table of nine will play down starting Aug. 10.

Should be a good final table. I guess Sirius has it on 125 if you want to listen to it if youre driving around.
The guy that came in 18th is giving all his money to charity.

i hope allen takes it as he is one of the best poker players but hasnt been seen on tv much. I think he is one of the best players but doesnt jump on the spotlight. I think isaw him with a bracelet last year and final table a few times. This will finally show that a pro can win the big one once again!

So we got the PPV and am going to watch this thing tonight. (damn Im a sicko)
Heres how the final table is set up...

Seat 1: Richard Lee (San Antonio, TX) $11.82M
Lee is 55 years old. He has the hottest railbirds out of all the final table players. His wife and his daughters are all smoking hot. He's originally from Hawaii and this is his second WSOP. He has never cashed before aside from the 2006 main event. His best career finish was 12th at the 2005 Grand Slam of Poker in LA. He's been retired for eight years and his wife was sick of him moping around the house, so he took up poker. His hobby landed him at the final table. His deceased father taught him how to play when he was a young kid. He admitted, "My father would be smiling on me right now."

Seat 2: Erik Friberg (Stockholm, Sweden) $9.605M
Friberg is a 23 year old online pro and part of the Scandi invasion. His home country of Sweden is the most successful country in the percentage of players who made the money in the Main Event. Friberg is the 2005 Swedish Poker Challenge Champion. His nickname is "Lilar" which roughly translated in Swedish is "gambler." Emma, one of the writers from Sweden, said that he's writing a poker blog on Expressen, a nightly Swedish newspaper. "The citizens of Sweden are hoping for a victory," she said.

Seat 3: Paul Wasicka (Westminster, CO) $7.97M
The former bartender and restaurant manager was born in Dallas, TX and now resides in Colorado. He's been playing for two years and took 14th place in a NL event earlier this year.

Seat 4: Dan Nassif (St. Louis, MO) $2.6M
Nassif is an ad exec from St. Louis who took his summer vacation to play in the WSOP. He had to ask hi boss at the Riverfront Times for a few extra days off. He banned his friends and family from sweating him at the WSOP unless he made the final table. I guess they'll be there today.

Seat 5: Allen Cunningham (Las Vegas, NV) $17.77M
The 29 year-old Cunningham is the most successful player at the final table. He's won 4 bracelets: Stud (2001), Deuce-to-Seven Lowball (2002), and NL (2005 and 2006). he's part of the original "young guns of poker" including Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Layne Flack, and John Juanda. Cunningham is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet in a game full of liars and assholes. He's Flipchip's pick to win it all. I'm rooting for AC today.

Seat 6: Michael Binger (Atherton, CA) $3.14M
The 29 year old is a part-time pro who wants to be a theoretical physicist. He recently earned a PhD from Sanford. This is his second WSOP. He took 6th at the $1,500 NL event and won over $100K a few weeks ago.

Seat 7: Doug Kim (Hartsdale, NY) $6.77M
Doug Kim is a 22 year old recent Duke grad who will be working in the financial district in NYC. He's roomies and friends with Jason Strasser, who's one of the up and coming online pros. This is Doug's first ever cash! He's a Yankees fan too.

Seat 8: Jamie Gold (Malibu, CA) $25.6M
The Hollyweird agent to the stars (James Gandolfini and Felicity Huffman) is Johnny Chan's agent too. He's a TV producer and this is his 15th cash in a major tournament. He's been the chipleader the last three days and is trying to win this for his ailing father who has Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Seat 9: Rhett Butler (Rockville, MS) $4.815
Besides the weird name, Butler is a 44-year old insurance agent from Maryland. He's married with three kids and his friends bought him into the WSOP. He's been paying poker for more than two decades and this is his first live tournament.

I guess in need to root for the local boy now..
Paul Wasicka (Westminster, CO)

Gold Strike! Television Producer Jamie Gold Wins $12 Million At World Series of Poker Main Event
Friday August 11, 9:26 am ET

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2006--The new king of poker was crowned early today when Malibu, California, resident Jamie Gold, 36, won the No-Limit Texas Hold'Em Main Event at the 37th annual World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee's Best Light. Gold took home $12 million, the largest prize ever awarded in a live poker tournament.

He outlasted a record field of 8,773 players who anted up the $10,000 buy-in for the Main Event, creating an unprecedented prize pool of $82.5 million -- the largest for any sporting event in history. The Main Event at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino was the culmination of the 46-event World Series of Poker, which this year generated more than $158 million in total prize money.

Gold was the chip leader since Day 3 of the 10-day Main Event and never relinquished the lead.

"I just feel very fortunate that things went my way," said Gold. "I was playing the best poker of my life. I was in a zone where I just felt like I could manipulate people."

"We congratulate Jamie Gold on his tremendous accomplishment," said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the World Series of Poker. "He played superb poker over a prolonged period against a record field that included virtually every top professional and thousands of talented amateurs from around the world."

On the final hand of the tournament, Gold's pair of queens beat Westminster, Colorado, resident Paul Wasicka's pair of 10s. Wasicka earned $6,102,499 million for his second-place finish.

Michael Binger of Atherton, California, finished third, collecting $4,123,310. The remaining players at the final table were:

4th place: Allen Cunningham, Las Vegas, Nevada, $3,628,513

5th place: Rhett Butler, Rockville, Maryland, $3,216,182

6th place: Richard Lee, San Antonio, Texas, $2,803,851

7th place: Douglas Kim, Hartsdale, New York, $2,391,520

8th place: Erik Friberg, Stockholm, Sweden, $1,979,189

9th place: Dan Nassif, St. Louis, Missouri, $1,566,858

The 2006 Main Event attracted the largest field of participants ever to enter a live poker tournament. The previous record of 5,619 players was set at the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event, won by Joseph Hachem of Melbourne, Australia. Hachem pocketed a then-record $7.5 million.

Television coverage of the 2006 World Series of Poker World Championship Main Event begins August 22 on ESPN and continues on Tuesday nights at 8 and 9 p.m. until September 26 when action at the final table is broadcast.

My friend who plays the Station's tourneys chopped one last week with the other two guys who were left for $4,800 each.
No paperwork for anything under $5 grand there.

Paul needed to be a little more aggressive going up against Gold's stack. I agree with what Gordon was saying when he said in that situation Paul has nothing to lose so he needs to put a little more pressure on Gold. Having said that I don't think I would've called the all in with the pair of tens there with the queen on the board. Gold seemed to me to be talking him into it and he fell for it. Blinds were still small enough to wait and see what the next several hands get ya.

What do you guys think?

Jamie Gold wins World Series of Poker
By RYAN NAKASHIMA, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 26 minutes ago
LAS VEGAS - Former Hollywood talent agent Jamie Gold pulled off his best acting job ever early Friday, bluffing his way to victory at the World Series of Poker and taking home the grand prize of $12 million.

http://d.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20060811/capt.f505cfdb3e924597bbd07a6a8504a40b.wsop_final_t able_nvlr136.jpg?x=380&y=253&sig=._KCoewmlO79s.6VZUQvCw--

Gold, of Malibu, Calif., somehow convinced Paul Wasicka he had a weaker hand, getting him to push all his chips in the pot. The 36-year-old Gold screamed for joy to see Wasicka's pocket 10s to his pair of queens.

It was the last bit of overacting for the former agent to the stars, who had bluffed and cajoled his way to the chip lead during the last four days of play.

"I knew that he was weak, but he had a hand. And then I knew it was my chance," Gold said. "I went all in, and then I just went into my act. I actually talked him into calling with the worst of it, and that won the whole tournament."

Wasicka said he felt he could tell when Gold was bluffing even after he fell into his trap.

"I felt like I had a perfect read on him all day, whenever he would show his bluff, I thought he was bluffing," said Wasicka, a 25-year-old former restaurant manager from Westminster, Colo. "But against a player like that it makes it really difficult. You kind of just have to go with your gut. That's what I did, and it was wrong."

Still, the second-place finish earned Wasicka $6,102,499.

The nine players at the final table — four pros, a former talent agent, an insurance broker, an ad salesman, a recent college grad and a retired businessman — were guaranteed at least $1.5 million in winnings.

By the time Gold and Wasicka were the last two players left from a field of 8,773 entrants, huge bundles of cash were deposited on the poker felt. But most of the chips were on Gold's side of the table.

He eliminated six of the previous seven players himself, and Gold's 79 million in chips covered a good corner of the table. Wasicka's 11.2 million was badly overmatched.

I know the 'book' says to limp with pockets heads up, but I think I would have just shoved in pre flop with 10s. I dont see Gold calling with that hand pre flop. Even with the stack that he had. I think him calling with a Q on the board was pretty donkish too. At least when Danneman went down last year, he had an A and there was no way he was putting Hachem on a 7-3o and flopping the straight.

The one hand I was really dissapointed in was Cunningham was on the BB and raised enough to put utg (the guy who cme in 3rd) all in.
He calls with A-6o??? I dont know about calling all in with A-6o at what I believe was 6 handed at the time..

but what do I know..I return to playing .25/.50 n.....

I can definately see going all in pre-flop with pocket 10's when your at such a chip disadvantage and taking the blinds. But after that Q flopped and the way Gold was acting I would have folded, so yea I think your right there. And yea, I don't think I could call an all in with A-6o with 6 peeps. That's tough.

Last week I played 2 200.00 heads up sit n gos and 1 100.00 sit n go and won all 3. So I've got 500.00 and decide to try to triple that and join a 500.00 5 man sit n go and lost. It was my own damn fault. I had had too much Bacardi by then and was taking stupid chances. Oh well, I broke even for the night and still have most of the 2200.00 I won last month in the 10,000.00 guaranteed tourney. I'll keep pluggin away. I think it's time to get into another big tourney like that again. It's only 12.00+1.20 at 5:05pm-est. I was just surprised that I was playing so well heads up cuz that use to be my shortcoming. Like they say. Practice makes perfect. Well, there is no perfect in Poker :)

Le tme know if u do. I am an affiliate so i get people bonuses to refer. Playing alot of limit poker there also just to get my $300 in bonus money. I think the site is good if you like to play for money but feel 4th place out of 12 and u get your money back isnt a bad thing. I do play alot of $20 sit n gos and strive for top two but it is nice to get hit with a bad beat and still limp into third to get your money back. Plus, alot of Aussies and Scandanavian players there.

The $6 million "loser"

By Manny Gonzales
Denver Post Staff Writer
DenverPost.com

For the past two years, Paul Wasicka, a 25-year-old former restaurant manager and college dropout from Westminster, has been living off his gut instincts.

Almost always, his gut has led him to success.

On Friday, his instinct served him wrong, and Wasicka came up just short of winning the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. But with his second- place finish, Wasicka still walked away with a little more than $6.1 million.

"In poker, you just go with your instinct, and most of the time you're right, and some of the time you're wrong," Wasicka said. "This was one of the times I was wrong."

Former Hollywood talent agent Jamie Gold bluffed his way into victory over Wasicka and took home the $12 million grand prize.

Gold, of Malibu, Calif., somehow convinced Wasicka that he had a weaker hand, getting Wasicka to push all his chips in the pot. The 36-year-old Gold screamed for joy to see Wasicka's pair of 10s to his pair of queens.

"I knew that he was weak, but he had a hand. And then I knew it was my chance," Gold said. "I went all in, and then I just went into my act. I actually talked him into calling with the worst of it, and that won the whole tournament."

For Wasicka, an alumnus of Boulder's Fairview High School, the consolation prize was just fine considering he had not played competitive poker until two years ago, when one of his friends encouraged him to enter a tournament.

Wasicka knew the basic rules of what hand beats another, but he knew nothing of strategy. But following his gut he came in ninth and figured he was on to something.

"At that point I had just dropped out of college and didn't know what to do with my life," he said. "But this really appealed to me, because I'm a risk-taker, and I'm a gambler at heart."

Nine months ago, Wasicka quit his job bartending and managing his brother-in-law's Italian restaurant, Via Toscana in Louisville, and devoted himself to professional poker.

By the time Gold and Wasicka were the last two players left from a field of 8,773 entrants, huge bundles of cash were deposited on the poker felt.

The nine players at the final table - four pros, a former talent agent, an insurance broker, an ad salesman, a recent college grad and a retired businessman - were guaranteed at least $1.5 million each in winnings.

Gold started the final table with more than three times as many chips as Wasicka. His $79 million in chips covered a good corner of the table, while Wasicka was badly overmatched with $11.2 million.

The event was carried on pay-per-view on ESPN3. Wasicka had the largest cheering section of family and friends, who came to Las Vegas from all over.

"The atmosphere was just electric," Wasicka said. "This experience will be with me for the rest of my days."

So what's Wasicka (who - by the way - is single) going to do with his winnings?

He insists he's not going to gamble it all away or move to Vegas. However, he plans to buy a house there for when he goes on gambling trips. A percentage already was earmarked for a trio of friends and advisers, his parents will get 5 percent, and he donated $60,000 to cancer research.

"I wouldn't move to Vegas, it's not really my scene, but I come out here because this is where the big games are," he said. "I'll also use the winnings to travel a lot and play more in the big buy-in tournaments in Europe and Australia."
