Harry Potter may perish in the final installment of the boy wizard series in which two main characters die, author J.K. Rowling hinted in a television interview.
Speaking on Monday evening, Joanne Kathleen Rowling, 40, said she was well on the way to finishing the eagerly-awaited seventh Potter book.
"I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she told a chat show on Channel 4 television.
"The final chapter is hidden away although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," Rowling said.
"A price has to be paid, we are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras, do they? They go for the main characters -- well, I do."
Asked whether one of the casualties would be Potter himself, Rowling said she had never been tempted to kill off the magician before the finale.
At the same time, she added: "I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, 'Well I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author written sequels. So it will end with me and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."
The author said she did not want to commit herself either way on Potter's fate, telling interviewers Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan: "I don't want the hate mail, apart from anything else."
Speaking of her life as a famous writer, Rowling admitted to having been in denial during the unprecedented success of her first three books on the adventures of Potter and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
"That's where my reputation for being po-faced comes from. I was like a rabbit caught in the headlights," she said.
Rowling, who shot to fame from humble roots, also revealed that she still writes in cafes and based the character of Potter's good friend Hermione on a combination of herself and her sister when they were young.
As for the future after Potter, Rowling said: "I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."
The first six books in the series have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide and been translated into 63 languages.
The first four have also been made into blockbuster movies.
The seventh novel is reportedly due to be published next year at the earliest.

Ok, I'm guilty. I've never seen a stitch of celluloid on film nor read one iota of Harry Potter books. Is that following like the Anne Rice thing? Guess I must be missing out or something.

I liked the Vampire Chronicles, until it started turning into a story about having gay sex with vampires. I'm not too interested in romance novels, and that's what it turned into. And then when the book about Armand came out, I could only get so far before I was utterly repulsed by the whole series. I can't even look at the book The Vampire Lestat the same, and I loved that book the first time around.

First of all... about the siggy Ha! Classic bro..
As for Anne Rice, from what I remember, wasnt she that author who always wanted to off herself after writing one of her books? Freaking eccentric types man... I'm not suprised her material turned gay like that. I have a feeling that the Harry Potter author isnt quite as bad.

She was subtle about it in the beginning... You know... Fellas with deep passion who happened to really enjoy eachother's friendship and company. But then came The Tale of the Body Thief, and things started to get pretty squeemy (not a real word) when reading it.
I'd still reccommend The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned to anyone. Those two books back to back made for some entertaining Summer nights back in 95 (living in a house with no cable).

My boss is gay and he loves the books. He pretty much told me that it's the gay love scenes. Whatever raises your flag, I guess.

Snape's gotta go, though my guess is he offed Dumbledore on Dumbledore's own instructions (after Dumbledore started turning to stone from one of Voldmort's curses). I'm gonna go with Ginny finally taking the fall. She's overdue. Ron and Hermione live happily ... well, Ron will be miserable like all married sods. Harry lives on, sort of, like a broken Frodo in LOR.

I can see that. I can also see Snape living, and becoming the Head of Hogworts, assuming he isn't really "a bad guy." My only guess on Ginny is that she's "obviously" the girl for Harry, and to be true to the genre, Harry cannot "live happily everafter."

Good for her. I haven't read the books or seen the movies, but they're obviously of her own invention and she feels somewhat protective of the work. Why should her publishers and no talent heirs be allowed to piss in the gene pool she created? Just so they can keep the cash cow alive after she's gone?

Actually, if anyone is interested in something Harry-Potter-esque + vampires and all that stuff, with good old fashioned pulp-butt-kicking action, I would strongly recommend The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Bob, the Skull, is one of my favorite fictional characters.
I guess the rights have been picked up by the Sci-Fi channel, and Nicholas Cage is producing it.

I guess I just don't like the idea that creative control of the characters and story-line, as well as the royalties that go with them, should take precedence over the plot or even dictate whether the main character lives or dies.

I've always found it unsettling that people can actually get upset enough about the death of a fictional character to actually call the author out.
When Cedric Diggory was killed I got upset. Not at Rowling, but at Voldemort. When Dumbledore was killed I again got upset. Again not at Rowling, but at Snape and Voldemort. The only thing I get upset at an author for is bad story. Not bad writing. Some very good stories have been written by bad writers. Bad story is the second gravest sin an author can make. The gravest is changing the outcome of they story to satisfy the fans. An author must remain true to their story! If Potter dies, so be it.

I haven't read the books but I've seen all the movies with my kids. I purchased the first five books as a set fotr my daughter and she really liked them. I'm glad I did-I don't know how many of you are familiar with the Lexile system but it rates books on a scale of complexity and my daughter is way up there for her age. The Harry Potter books score really well on the Lexile list and it's hard to find stuff that is at her reading level but is also age appropriate. I'll be getting more of them soon, her 11th birthday is coming up in July.
