What's in the box? (http://www.nba.com/news/blackbox_060628.html)

Most think it's a new official ball to be used in games.

I think it is a new ball, but one that will go in the basket or clank off the rim on command via remote control, thus making it much easier for Stern to rig the games. ;D

ooooh, bring back the ABA ball
My father (who sadly is no longer with us) talked about the ABA ball EVERY FREAKIN TIME we talked NBA. He was a big Virginia Squires fan (they had Dr. J. AND George Gervin at the same time). He ALWAYS said it was so much easier to watch a game with the red/white/blue ball.

That would be sweet.

It is a new ball.

Not quite sure why this has not gotten more press, but the NBA will be using a new basketball design next season. The new ball is no longer going to be leather, rather a composite surface, and has a strikingly different look. One of the side effects of this new non-leather ball will likely be the decrease in shooting percentages, as the ball tends to “bobble” out a touch more than the normal NBA ball. The new ball was used exclusively at the NBA pre-draft camp. The new ball is also featured in print on the cover of the NBA’s 2006 draft guide. Ironically, neither the NBA nor Spalding has put out a release on the new ball yet. There had been rumors of the new ball design for the past few months - it was surprising to see it in use in Orlando, especially without any press on the new ball or its features – but it’s coming.

What a moronic idea the new ball is if it decreases shooting percentages.

That possibly cannot be right.

OT, but I'll throw it in this thread because it's NBA related. Draft fans, NBATV is showing "Classic Drafts" all this week. Trust me, these are comedy gold mines.

If it's a new ball but it isn't the red/white/blue ABA ball, it's pointless.

I'm tellin' ya, It's Stern's soul. It was finally returned to him by Pat Riley (a closet necromancer) in exchange for the Heat winning the NBA title.

Or it could just be that new ball Nugs was talking about......

New 3-piece suit uniforms to make the players look more professional while they're playing.

I'm sorry...I've spent too much time in a corporation

Amen.

This generation of NBA players is so fundamentally un-sound that they will GREATLY benefit from a ball that makes it even harded to make a jump shot. Why doesn't the NBA simply do away with anything except for dunks?

They should do a new one. The one they have is odd, in my opinion. It looks like the guy who made if fell asleep while he was welding the ball in place. When he woke up and saw it had slipped, he said, "Aw, screw it. They won't notice."

Why not? The NBA has already devalued their championship trophy by letting players who haven't earned the right, touch it, hold it, hug it, lift it and whatnot for the sake of commercials and promos for the playoffs.

They stole the idea from the NFL.

They stole the idea from the NFL.

The NBA has been doing it for years.

Either way, it doesn't matter who did it first, it's a complete joke. Players should have to earn the right to so much as touch the championship trophy.

If that's the case, they're busting it out a year too early. Should Stern's beloved Knicks win the Greg Oden sweepstakes next season, the Bulls will happily exercise their right to swap picks with them per the conditions of the Eddy deal. Way to go Isiah!! You really know how to build a team! Too bad that team isn't your own.

what level of gimmickery does the NBA have to stoop too before you lose interest in their games.
