In the 4 years I was in HS, and went through our HS ministry at my church, we went on these trips every summer to places that needed help rebuilding. We went to Mexico, Vancouver, Scotland, and this past Spring Break, I went with out college ministry and helped rebuild some of the homes that were demolished by Katrina in NOLA. I dont think you give us a chance honestly Spider. And, in all fairness to Errand, I like him, but I dont think hes the first guy to go to when it comes to this sort of stuff. I agree with his stance on politics, but I dont think he does a good job representing all Christians, specifically people like you met. I did those things all through HS, and continue to do it in college. Our HS and College ministry at my church do this stiuff all the time. It's alot of fun, and allows for a great way of fellowship, and to do Gods work.

You know Spider, it really isn't the religion that makes people good, its the people. Some of the most kind-hearted, well-intentioned people I know are atheist. And some of the most cold hearted, wicked, pompous people are the first to proclaim they are religious. It doesn't take a book or attending a meeting in a building to make you good. Your deeds speak for themselves.
No matter how you slice it, or which religion you proclaim, just do unto others as you would want them to do unto you is truly the Golden rule.
Hinduism
"Do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you" (Mahabharata 5:15:17) 5000 BC
Judaism
Love your neighbor as yourself" - Moses 1500 BC
China
"What you do not want others to do to you, do not do to others." -Confucius 500 BC
Judaism
"What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man." - Hillel 50 BC
Christianity
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." - Jesus 5 BC

I was thinking this just the other day... I was walking through Barnes and Noble looking at the books on politics and what-not.
There was not one single book that I could find that highlights the GOOD in people. It was either books telling me how evil liberals are or how the right is out to destroy democracy.
Nothing made me real happy about being an American... Its so obvious to me that both parties have invested all of their spirit in division. They spend billions of dollars teaching us to hate our fellow Americans... and that sucks.
I wonder if we'd spend less time being divided and instead spend more time looking at our positives if so many of our social issues would just resolve themselves. If we fundamentally LIKED each other, maybe we'd worry less about controlling each other and instead focus on making our country great(er).
Good for you spide for doing just that.

Im glad to hear it Spider.
We Christians can be very hypocritical because we are not perfect and make mistakes, and at times, get big heads.
Helping out on mission trips is the best times Ive ever had. The looks on the faces are worth it, going froma cardboard box to the shed we build is amazing, and to us, nothing. But to them its a mansion.

Every once and awhile you see Christians who actually walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.
I just saw that movie "End of the Spear" the other day (based on a true story about a group of Christian missionaries trying to help two warring native tribes in Ecuador.)
Watch this movie if you want to see an example of people who actually act like Christ (instead of just talking about Him while they act like hate-filled, war-mongering bigots.)

If they'd just walk the walk without having to talk the talk, I'd be much more open to the whole deal than I am now.
