"Futurama" gets new life on Comedy Central

By Andrew Wallenstein Thu Jun 22, 11:36 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Futurama" has a future.

Comedy Central has resurrected the former Fox animated series from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. At least 13 new episodes will be produced -- the first since the series' original run from 1999-2003.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with 20th Century Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing "Futurama" library of 72 episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West,
Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

"We are thrilled that Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox Television have decided to produce new episodes of 'Futurama' and that Comedy Central will be the first to air them," said David Bernath, senior vice president for programming at the network.

"There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that matches perfectly with our audience, and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library but something they've never seen as well."

"Futurama" isn't the first series to return to air after cancellation. The Fox animated series "Family Guy" returned to the network last year after getting a second wind on DVD and late-night cable.

It's interesting that Comedy Central picked it up, you'd think Cartoon Network would have.

But it's awesome news, Futurama rules.

That surprised me too, but as long as it's back I don't care. I'm in a very small minority, but I always enjoyed "Futurama" more than "Family Guy".

I don't know if CC had the kind of backing needed to be the one that gets the show actually running again...money wise. I could be wrong. Picking up syndications of a show and being the one who gets it back into production are very different things.

That episode where Frye finds his dog was a classic. The sequence at the end, where they illustrate the undying loyalty of man's best friend, chokes me up every time.

Jurassic Bark was definately one of the best episodes ever aired, by any cartoon.

Futurama has always been decent, I hadn't realized it'd been off the air for 3 years. Family Guy was better before it came back, the recent stuff has just been interchangable pop culture jokes.

I hate that episode. And it's because of that scene. Dammit, I don't want a cartoon to make me feel sad. To this day, that's the only episode I've only watched once. All the other episodes I've seen enough times I could probably recite them word for word.

Family guy is the robin williams of cartoon series. When it controls itself, it is funny; but how often does that happen?

King of the Hill is very underrated. I didn't really "get" the humor of the show until I actually watched a few episodes...LOL

King of the Hill is funny. Simpsons, Futurama also funny. On FX, Like Rescue Me. That's funny, too.

OMG my Futurama is back. Rock! Although family guy is quite funny, Futurama was so much better...never missed it..still watch it in re-run land.

King Of The Hill is probably my favorite currently running cartoon.

The Simpsons in its prime, like seasons 5-10, is untouchable, but their new ones suck ass.

South Park is a close second to KOTH, and I really like the new ones. The early ones had some shock value, had some funny dick and fart jokes, but no substance. These later seasons have been great though, being absolutely hysterical and commenting on actual issues, current, events, etc.

KOTH has gone down hill Ha! I've stopped watching.

Family guy has more funny moments...the kind of thing you talk about with people the next day or reference with friends at later times.

Futurama has a different quality. Each episode is consistantly funny from start to finish but when its over there are not a lot of parts I can recall as standing out if you are trying to talk to someone else about.

I'd agree with that. Futurama is funny from start to finish (and probably better overall that Family Guy) but Family Guy has way more quotables, one-liners, etc. I don't think I've ever quoted Futurama, outside of kiss my shiney metal ass.

Actually I take my original statement back. One of my favorite lines from any cartoon... Hell any movie, TV shows, etc, comes from Leela:

"I'm rich! I suddenly have an opinion on the capital gains tax!"

Maybe it's because I'm an accounting major, but I love that line.

Bender: Bite my shiny metal ass.
Fry: It doesn't look so shiny to me.
Bender: Shinier than yours, meatbag.

For a board that's full of South Park fans, i'm surprised that you would regurgitate that idea so blatantly.

Although those two episodes of South Park were pretty funny, not all of Family Guy is "interchangeable (which by the way has three e's... wait til Slap sees that) pop culture jokes". They have those moments, and sometimes they are still funny, but the other stuff they come up with is just hilarious.

I can agree with the fact that their older stuff was a little better, but this "off-season" should give them a chance to really put something great out there this fall.

The only problem is that the original stuff is few and far between, and seems to be present less and less.
