Seven people were arrested Thursday in connection with the early stages of a plot to attack Chicago's Sears Tower and other buildings in the U.S., including the FBI office here, a federal law enforcement official said.
As part of the raids related to the arrests, FBI agents swarmed a warehouse in Miami's Liberty City area, using a blowtorch to take off a metal door. One neighbor said the suspects had been sleeping in the warehouse while running what seemed to be a "military boot camp."
The official told The Associated Press the alleged plotters were mainly Americans with no apparent ties to al-Qaida or other foreign terrorist organizations. He spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt news conferences planned for Friday in Washington and Miami.
Miami U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta said in a statement that the investigation was an ongoing operation and that more details would be released Friday.
"There is no imminent threat to Miami or any other area because of these operations," said Richard Kolko, spokesman for FBI headquarters in Washington. He declined further comment.
FBI Director Robert Mueller, questioned about the case during an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live," said he couldn't offer many details because "it's an ongoing operation."
"We are conducting a number of arrests and searches" in Miami, Mueller said, which were expected to be wrapped up Friday morning.
Residents living near the warehouse said the men taken into custody described themselves as Muslims and had tried to recruit young people to join their apparently militaristic group.
The residents said FBI agents spent several hours in the neighborhood showing photos of the suspects and seeking information. They said the men, who appeared to be in their teens or 20s, had lived in the area about a year.
The men slept in the warehouse, said Tashawn Rose, 29. "They would come out late at night and exercise. It seemed like a military boot camp that they were working on there. They would come out and stand guard."
She talked to one of the men about a month ago: "They seemed brainwashed. They said they had given their lives to Allah."
Rose said the men tried to recruit her younger brother and nephew for a karate class. "It was weird," she said.
Benjamin Williams, 17, said the group had young children with them sometimes. Sometimes, he added, the men "would cover their faces. Sometimes they would wear things on their heads, like turbans."
Xavier Smith, who attends the nearby United Christian Outreach, said the men would often come by the church and ask for water.
"They were very private," said Smith, 33. "The spoke with like an accent, sort of a Jamaican accent."
Gov. Jeb Bush was briefed on the situation Thursday, according to his spokeswoman, Alia Faraj.
"We have great confidence in the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who are committed to keeping our country safe," Faraj said.
She added that there has been greater communication between state and federal agencies since the 2001 terror attacks.
The 110-floor Sears Tower is the nation's tallest building. Security was ramped up after the Sept. 11 attacks, and the 103rd-floor skydeck was closed for about a month and a half.
The FBI's headquarters in Miami sits near a residential neighborhood just east of Interstate 95.
A huge crowd — up to 250,000 people — was expected downtown Friday for a parade to honor the NBA champion Miami Heat. Security measures consistent with such an event were in place, city officials said, and the raids were not expected to affect it.
Several terrorism investigations have had south Florida links. Several of the Sept. 11 hijackers lived and trained in the area, including ringleader Mohamed Atta, and several plots by Cuban-Americans against Fidel Castro's government have been based in Miami.
Jose Padilla, a former resident once accused of plotting to detonate a radioactive bomb in the U.S., is charged in Miami with being part of a support cell for Islamic extremists. Padilla's trial is set for this fall.

I have already cited OT scripture that states exactly what you just said. So if say the 'pope' declared a holy war how many do you think would buy it?
oh and "they aren't christians" - much the same as say a muslim who can say "those who practice violence aren't muslim" - which i've heard say by american muslim groups. and in the koran, there is no split between an old and a new law
it specifically states to kill infidels..nowhere in the NT does it say that in the real bible

josh, the OT is relavant, but as a guide and a history to show you how God's plan was planned out from the beginning
the new law put in to place did not only allow one certain set of people to be saved like the Jews in the OT
The Jews were the chosen in the OT and God protected them, which included "smiting" their enemies.
Now, Jews and Gentiles are open for salvation, so anyone can be saved, not just one sect of people, which is why violence to try to convert people is wrong...as evidenced by Jesus' example when he was arrested...he scolded Peter for cutting the guards ear off and healed the guard...said his kingdom isn't coming by violence...Can't remember the exact verse, but I know it's near the end of Matthew
as opposed to Mohammed's great example of killing everyone who didn't follow his will

Good job guys!
With regard to the wiretaps, don't you think that given the controversy surrounding the NSA program the WH would have put out a press release hailing the success of the program had it ANYTHING to do with these arrests? They wouldn't even have to tell us HOW they did it, just some blanket statement: "the feds were tipped off by anonomously listening to calls from the ME to the suspects" or something. You can bet your ass they would. Has anyone seen such an official claim yet?
Rather, doesn't this help prove we can protect our people AND our liberties at the same time?

God may have changed his nature. People mellow with age, perhaps its the same for deities as well. Maybe he's turning the business over to his son. Perhaps he's hired a media relations firm. no offense, but it seems to me that if one argues that the bible must be interpreted literally, despite the fact that portions of the OT as well as literally ALL of Jesus' teaching are allegories, that is literally putting God in a box that God didn't make. And, the "teachings" one takes from the bible by attempting to read it literally will inevitably be both based on one's own moral/social view and inevitably NOT what the writer intended.

Seven men accused of trying to blow up the Sears Tower with help from al-Qaida never actually made contact with the terrorist network and were instead caught in an FBI sting involving an informant who posed as an al-Qaida operative, authorities said Friday.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stressed that there was no immediate threat in either Chicago or Miami because the group did not have explosives or other materials it was seeking.
"This group was more aspirational than operational," FBI Deputy Director John Pistole said.
"We are confident that we have identified every individual who had the intent of posing a threat to the United States," said R. Alexander Acosta, U.S. attorney in Miami
"It's an example of the philosophy of prevention. These arrests were made during the talking stage, long before any bomb-making stage," said Kendall Coffey, a former U.S. attorney in Florida. "While they may be seen as bungling wannabes, they are potentially dangerous wannabes who, based on the allegations, were pursuing extremely dangerous plans."
So let me get this straight... they were "Trying" to blow up a building, but had no explosives or materials to do such a thing... Some defense attorney is going to have a field day with this.

Actually one of the "Christian" folk here started screaming about how Muslims were evil. At that point people reminded him that Christians do bad also... but feel free to join Lama's all persecuted Christian team :)
Persecution? More like mild annoyance. You're giving yourself far to much credit. :notthissh

from the best i can tell all we stopped here was a group of idiots from talking big... The article states they didn't have the money, supplies, or ability to carry out their big talk. Right now, i'm not exactly sure what they are being convicted of.
Most likely it will be a conspiracy to commit charge. High profile media bust, little real terror reduction effort.

From what I've heard of these guys so far, they sound dumber than dirt.
