They had the guy on CNBC yesterday. Then they had an industry spokesman trying to explain that outsourced CS centers don't really act like except on rare occasion. Then the CNBC anchor asked him why service reps are paid bonuses if they can keep customers from resigning, he answered by saying that isn't always the case, pretty funny stuff.

That's interesting. Just a couple weeks ago someone told me if you were set up to have AOL billed direct to a credit card it was impossible to cancel. So maybe this account rep isn't so different from the rest of them.

I had AOL in college, say ten years ago or so. I tried caceling that sumbitch numerous times...it took me nearly a year to finally get it to cancel, and that was after I asked my bank to stop payment. Then AOL calls me and says there is something wrong with the payment for my account.....well no **** there is, I've tried to cancel with you for nearly a year. AOL is the devil

My mother in law used to work in their "customer support" area and said how they were authorized to offer their first born to keep people tied up. And how their bonuses were tied to their ability to retain customers (along with call time, etc).
Try removing AOL from your computer though if you installed it....good luck with that. My wife did that on her laptop and I had to wipe the harddrive to get it uninstalled completely.

I stopped shopping at Best Buy. They sold me one of those extended warranty plans for my Treo 600. The deal was that if I had any problems, they'd be able to exchange it in the store... No hassles, right?
Well, it turned out my Treo was having a hardware malfunction, and when I went to redeem the extra service that I paid for, they said that they switched the policy back in September (it was November when this happened). I said, "well I should be grandfathered in, because I purchased the plan in March." No dice. The only person expected to live by their agreements is me. They say that they can change them at any time to suit their needs.
They had to escort me out, yelling to customers to not purchase their extended warranties because this is what happens when you try to redeem them.
I'll never shop at Best Buy again.

2 years ago when my father died I had to call AOL to cancel the account and I got some of the same runaround.
I had to be clear that since HE WAS DEAD he would no longer be using the account.
It was nothing to the extent what this guy went through, but it is clear that AOL trains its employees to retain members at any cost.
They can spin it with an apology and state that the guy got canned, but I think the guy was doing what he was told and just took it WAY too far. He was probably afraid of getting fired for losing the account. :)

Which reminds me of another funny story... Some representative of Best Buy sent me an email once, wanting to run ads at the top of the forum through December. They were paying a pretty outrageous amount for click throughs, and even more for people who signed up for their newsletter.

I also had trouble getting of of that crap years ago. I kept screaming at him, I got hung up on twice, and kept asking for a supervisor...then I got "I AM the Supervisor if you can ****ing believe it...Then I demanded to speak to the ADMINSISTRATOR...but he was tied up...probably doing his secretary...Then I told the idiot that I was going to join the class action lawsuit for fraudulent business practices.
Can you imagine being a service rep for AOL? I would just assume the Kurt Cobain shotgun formation. Selling junk investment capital was bad enough, but listening to people complain for 8 hours...I wonder what the suicide rate is for those workers.
My mail-box would be flooded...."You've got mail" would yap at me constantly. The bastards even sell your e-mail address to advertisers. Thankfully, they will be out of business soon. They are on the verge of bankrupcy.

O.K. Lets see. how to start this out. i was at an employee at best buy for a year or so, and i have all kinds of stories that i can tell ranging from sales managers throwing there arms in my face threating me, all the way down to just the regular i get crapped on stories. I'm sure that best buy isn't that bad of a place to work, i think i just got stuck at a crappy store. Managers promote people based on who they know, and not what they actually do. I carried our dept., not to sound like i have an ego or anything, but i did. just because i didn't bring managment fish from when i went camping, i'm nothing. I am nothing but a number at the end of the day to a company that does not care about it's employees. Unleash the power of your people.....what a crock of malarkie. thats right . i spelled it wrong, but i did use the word. That store turned my world around. I used to love doing car audio, untill i worked at best buy. they took what i love and made it a nightmare. I
was treated unfairly, i feel that i was discrimanated against, and its all because one person started rumors about me. what a way to base someone....off of rummors. all best buy is to me is high school all over, but instead of being with kids that are 15-18, its more like i was surrounded by abunch of first-graders. I have more details that i can use, but i'm just trying to make this short. don't know what good this will do, but hey, who knows?

The guy I work with was a manager at that call center in OKC. He said on several occasions he dropped an F-bomb on a customer. And yes their bonus system is stuctured around how many "saves" they have. I used AOL for a few days when I moved this last January. I had to wait for my broadband to be up and running even though my phone was active and I didn't realise that my ISP provided free dial-up service in that case. I cancelled three days after I signed up and I had fun with the guy on the phone, venting my hatred of AOL. He kept trying to talk me into staying and I just kept ranting about shady business practices and viral software. He gave up before I was even done having my fun. Ah, well.

I bought a computer from Best Buy. Shortly after, I broke my back and neck in a work related incident. While having all that fixed surgically, they found cancer. I had to file bankruptcy, after my spouse ran off and left me with all the normal bills, in addition to all the medical bills. I reaffirmed my account with Best Buy, and paid it off. They said that they dont accept reaffirmations and despite the fact that I paid off the computer completely, they want it back. They have gotten a law firm to go after me, and put bad reports on my credit report every month, keeping me from building my credit back up.

One thing I love about the internet is reading passionately held feelings and there's nobody more bitter than the kids who work at your local Best Buy. They hate us almost as much as they hate their managers.
I think this kid sold me a DVD player a couple years ago:

I am a current employee at 787, Surprise Az. I was inspire to share my distrought of best buy. I was screwed out of our blue crew bucks. I have been working since 2004 and had to leave for knoxville because my dad had to go to Iraq. They said I would have to quit and be re-hired, which was understandable, since it was christmas season. However, it turns out that they gave other people that time off, and i had said something in october about it. Well anyway I left and came back, but was considered a new employee, therefore was not eligible for the blue crew bucks. I was gone for about 45 days tops, and they denined me for being a new employee. I was screwed big time, I still can't poop right. The management now has gotten to a point of being so inconciderate of their employees I yearn for a chance to get back at them. In the last Viewpoint survey I was told to put all 5's, and I did, and I told viewpoint I did. I also said that Hilter showed more compassion during the holocaust. I also mentioned that suicide is a constant thought while i am on best buy's time. It wasn't always like that, just lately. I am constantly telling the management that i am unhappy, but all they care about are numbers and arayain agenda. If I do not go to heaven and goto hell instead, i will be a best buy associate. I am constantly thinking of ways to bring my best buy experience to an end, but i can't figure out how to rape a coperation. I want to take their pride, their passion, and their performance, and leave it like a cowboy leaving an 19 century whore house, with no regards, and great and satisfying pleasure.

Taco's story is interesting. Never had that with Best Buy, but at Fry's Electronics once, I was returning a defective processor. They claimed to not sell defective merchandise (Uhh) but I knew I was in the right. I played verbal pong with the manager until a line formed behind me in the returns line. Another customer spoke up and said he had purchased two defective sticks of RAM and a dead CPU previously. They went and got me a replacement CPU, and I had them test it. THAT ONE was defective! They got another one and it worked, so I took it.

That is one reason why I won't **** with anyone but managers if I am going to make a scene. The people manning the registers are just as much victims as customers are.

I was Bob...very content. I was in the lot and about to watch our team play one game to go to the Super Bowl. I was watching all these hardcore people get ready for a football game. And context is exactly what I was......
You'll also notice a propane tank heater in front of me...it was cold as all get out.... It was my first low temperature day of the year.

Right on both counts. Why fvck around with someone who has no stroke. They can't make any decisions.
And as far as you playing verbal pong (I really hope you don't mean you gave the manager fellatio. If so disregard the rest of this post.)...that's also right. They're trying to get over, but they don't want you to never come back. They want your dough. Unless you're Taco John of course, because they apparently dragged his ass out of the store without hesitation.

I almost forgot this about Best Buy... I was in there one day, buying something simple, a CD or a DVD or something. It's the closest place to campus, so that's where I usually head. Anyways, this dude is at the returns making a complete scene. They escorted him out with instructions to call police if he comes back. Pretty funny.

AOL
Verizon

It's all garbage..don't do business with these companies...it's very simple. If you know people that work for them...tell them they need to quit and find a better job. Samething if they're a metermaid

When your dealing with giant companies minions, who I basically consider Orcs, just remember the hell they let themselves into to even get such a prestigious job in a cubicle. It's bad enough you have to spend 30 minutes going thru a computer, then land in the Hymalayas talking to someone with rudimentary English skills, but when you ask for a manager they say that they ARE an account manager! Once I get thru to a human and barge my way into someone with authority, I always make sure I apologize because I know that they didn't set the groundwork. I know it's difficult, but they didn't set the groundrules, some idiot on a three martini lunch and an executive secretary the wears knee pads did.

One thing I love about the internet is reading passionately held feelings and there's nobody more bitter than the kids who work at your local Best Buy. They hate us almost as much as they hate their managers.
I think this kid sold me a DVD player a couple years ago:

Ha! That's just damn funny.
At least you actually have a valid reason for not going to Best Buy. I hate the place for a petty reason. We just got a BB right before Christmas here, and my best friend and I were shopping. We went in and looked around, found nothing....left....out the wrong door. We went out the entrance instead of the exit ( both were wide open ), and this security guy yelled at us...he yelled over going out the wrong door. We were out and he made us come back in and go out the exit door. Dick. I felt like I was about 5 years old.
Haven't gone back since.

Gestapo tactics pervade the big chains Mt. Next time someone yells at you like a five year old to come back, or something similar...say no thank you...and if he tries to physically restrain you...kick him in the nuts. I absolutely hate that sh!t.

Unfortunately, yes. Eventually you're going to see satellite and cable providers start offering a la carte programming for people who feel like they only utilize specific stations. Its a step down a bad road for consumers.

You think the phone companies are jacking prices....I used to work for Oakley and know what the glasses cost to produce. That being said, they are the best eyewear out there, period. They take care of their customers. What the consumer is paying for is the R&D more so than the actual product. It's just interesting that people will bitch and moan about the price of gas, cost of mobile service, etc but still buy luxury items.
BTW, those glasses look good on ya brotha.

I had about the same damn thing happen to me with Discover card.
My wife was late paying the minimum balance one month so they charged us a late fee of $40. OK, no biggie, our fault so we have to pay, right? Well not only did they charge us a late fee, we started getting calls from them about every two days wondering where our payment was (it was about $25). They even threatened to go to a collection agency. This, all for $25 from a customer who had been with them 12+ years and NEVER had a late payment before now.
Ultimately, when they called at 9AM on Father's day, I had enough. We paid off the balance with another credit card and dropped them like a brick. That was the most fun I EVER had on the telephone in my life. They kept asking why I was dropping them and I ripped them some new ones. It was great.
After I called them to cancel the account, I got about 3-4 more calls from Discover card managers wanting to know why I dropped their card. And I let them have some too. They went so far as to say they would reimburse us the $40 late fee so as to get us back. WHY THE HELL MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!
Normally I get pissed in these situations, but a$$holes like this really give me a chance to vent and make fun of them. It was great therapy.
