View Full Version : Someone Explain To Me How Nascar Works

Real thread this time. I don't follow the "sport" so I really don't know anything about it.
What are the rules?
How do they know if a driver has completed all the laps?
When there is a caution flag and/or an accident how do they determine how they line back up?
What is restricter plate racing?
Can a driver make a pit stop, wait till all the cars go back around, and then leave the pit area and drive to the front of all the cars and become the leader?
Is there any strategy?
And finally, why do people find this entertaining? Seriously.

There are tons of rules, just as in any sport. The cars all have to have the same setup ( handed down from NASCAR ). They can tweak things here and there for advantages, but NASCAR has cracked down a lot in the last couple of years on all things.
2. NASCAR has scoring loops installed under all the surfaces in every track. They're at various points in the whole thing. Each car is equipped with a GPS kind of deal that relays all information back to NASCAR. This is how they catch them speeding on pit road and other things too.
3. When there's an accident, they use the above mentioned scoring loops to find out exactly who was where at the immediate time that the caution was thrown.
4. Restrictor plate racing is done only at the two biggest tracks, Daytona and Talladega. They put a plate on the engine that covers up some of the air intake so it cuts their horsepower down. They do this to bring speeds down and they say keep it safer. However, the drivers hate it. It makes it so it's harder to pass and all the cars get bundled up and then the Big One strikes and it takes out 20 cars in one fell swoop. It's sweet. ;D
5. No, that would be stupid. They would end up losing a lap.
6. Tons of strategy. Two tires or 4 tires, pit or don't pit. Gas only or full pit stop. They're really quite sneaky about a lot of it. I think you'd have to really watch a couple of races to actually see how it all works and works out. I know this just doesn't appeal to some people. At the same time, watching basketball doesn't appeal to me.
7. Seriously?! Hell yeah! Race fans are some of the coolest people out there. There's wrecks and horsepower and hot tempers, what's not to love? ;D

That there is. However, one of the two road course races they have each year is coming up this weekend and they are awesome, IMO. Of course I like racing, so that's a given. Lo and behold, there are right turns involved. ;D

I might actually hate Tony more than sissyjeffie. Maybe. real close race there.
He didnt blow everything he had last night. He didn't have the car he had last night. You have to admit that he didnt need a drafting partner last night and nobody would draft with him tonight. Had Truex been able to keep up with him tonight they would both of done better.

I don't know if it was lack of drafting help or not, but he certainly didn't have a great car tonite.
Yeah, at least we can agree on one thing....how much Tony is a complete asshat.

Well I am not a hockey fan so I dont know what you re talking about. However you can rest assured that I am here to brighten your day anytime you need it. No Jr. did not have a very good car but I do think if he could of had some help then he might of done better. and I will say this (though it really hurts) sissyjeffie did have a pretty good car.

;D .... 1 time I thought my goose was cooked voiced my political opinion in texas ;D , laid over in longview Tx for a week , and this huge bastard , probably 350-360 pounds 6'8 or close to it , was comming into this truck stop every day , after the 4 th day he looked at me and said , you been here awhile , how much longer do you have to stay ? I said I have been here so long , that they ( texas ) are talking about making me a full citizen and liking Bush ........After that came out I realized what I had said and I figured I was about to take this mamoth Texan on ,but this mountian gets a funny look on his face , and said I have been a texan all my life , I hate Bush , and walked off ........that was a close one ;D

Ummm, NOPE! :spit: But Jeff can cross Chicago off his SHORT list of tracks he hasn't won at yet. :~ohyah!:
What a way to do it too. Take that you Roush POS, and your classless fans can take it too. That payback is a bitch.

So you are advocating, wrecking someone with the potential of seriously injuring or even killing them?
:kiddingme

Yep. I'm all for wrecking. Always have been. It gets done all the time. Yeah, I hate it when it happens to my driver, but that's racin'. It's part of racing, it's always been part of racing ( see the old timers, it used to be a lot worse ), and I hope it always will be a part of it.
