13. Denver. Willie Middlebrooks was a poor first-round pick, followed by second-round DE Paul Toviessi. That's a lousy one-two punch for you. Good thing Denver recovered by taking DE Reggie Hayward, who became a two-year starter before leaving as a free agent, and guard Ben Hamilton, who has made 64 starts for them. Punter Nick Harris, the fifth-rounder, is now with Detroit.

Piss-poor draft by the Chiefs that year. Not a single starter from it.

The broncos draft was pretty lousy too. Hamilton is the only player they have to show for that draft...well and John Engelberger

He talks about Jim Otto somehow laying claim to the number 00. Funny, when I think of 00 I think of Ken Burrough.

I still remember that draft like it was yesterday. I was up in the mountains, just outside Boulder at my friends place watching the draft. I was alll happy until the Broncos started laying turds. Middlebust & Toviessi, that one-two punch left me scratching my head.

My friend kept asking me who Toviessi was... I had no answer...

Denver devoted a lot of picks to D from here through 2006, FA's also. And in Slap's immortal words - swing and a miss!

People wanted more D in the 2006 draft, but the FO had to address the O finally. They shot enough wad on D since this forgettable draft.

Yes, indeed. The Texans had two picks in almost every round of the 2002 draft and all they really have to show for it are David Carr and Chester Pitts. You'd think with that many picks, they'd have found some studs but, when you look back on it, there just wasn't much there. The two surprises from that year were Clinton Portis to Denver in the second round and Randy McMichael to the Dolphins in the fourth round.

(Because I'm not feeling like Jack the Ripper as I write my last column before a month break, I won't tell you who gave the Bears an "A'' for their 2001 draft. Suffice it to say I will not be so charitable to a team that hasn't retained one of its six 2001 picks ... and which made David "I Like to Drop Footballs" Terrell the eighth pick in the draft.)

Lets hope this moniker doesn't stick this year!

I remember that draft being pretty crappy until I review who was taken:

LaDainian Tomlinson
Richard Seymour
Marcus Stroud
Casey Hampton
Adam Archuleta
Deuce McAllister
Reggie Wayne
Todd Heap

RD. 2

Drew Brees
Kyle Vanden Bosch
Alge Crumpler
Chad Johnson
Fred Smoot
Matt Light
LaMont Jordan
Travis Henry
Shaun Rogers

3
Derrick Burgess
Steve Smith
Reggie Hayward

It pisses me off we could have had Todd Heap and Crumpler and went with Willie suckface.:notthissh

At least some our picks are starters, even if not for our team. The Chiefs can't even say that much.

Two words: BEN and HAMILTON. A Top 3 run-blocking guard in the NFL.

Actually, the Toviessi pick was inexcusable. A proper medical exam would've shown the problem, and we might have somebody else - Crumpler for example.

Middlebrooks they knew had a problem, but took a chance. I remember right where I was when that pick was made - the Century City Mall in L.A. - and Kiper immediately called Willie "damaged goods" and the pick "a reach." I think that was the same year the Colts GM was dissing Kiper ... but you gotta admit, he had that one right.
