Chiefs | Welbourn retires
Thu, 15 Jun 2006 17:21:46 -0700

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs OL John Welbourn has announced his retirement from the NFL. "I decided to retire on my own terms rather than somebody else's," Welbourn told The Associated Press. He said he would be filing the paperwork on his retirement with the NFL office. "I discussed this with the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago," said Welbourn, who participated in last month's minicamp but has been unhappy that the Chiefs would not renegotiate terms of his contract. Kansas City plans to keep him on the active roster for now, in case he changes his mind.

Wow if he goes and Shields and Roaf follow next year...

Wonder if Gonzo will get smart and go FA next year :D

This is a money issue. Welbourn's being a biatch.

I agree, but if he follows thru on it your Oline may be in shambles this year if Shields or Roaf go down. LJ's dream of a 2K season may just go down the drain.

wierd to just retire like that over money. Welbourn was busted for steriods once. I smell a quit or be banned.

That is a strong possiblity, but I doubt we will ever now. Welbourn is planning on going to law school so I wonder how much that has to do with it. Oh well. As long as Kyle Turley can bulk up another 20 pounds the Chiefs will be fine.

Not a big loss. He's the worst member of their OL. It will hurt them a little, not substantially though.

I oringinally though the same thing. But the Chiefs have said they will keep him on the active roster until it becomes final, just in case he changes his mind. So now I'm not so sure. May really be about money.

The reason the Eagles traded him in the first place was due to money...he wanted a new contract or wouldn't play so they traded him to the Chiefs...He clearly thinks he is better than he really is. He might be ok at guard but he was pretty poor at RT. Not a big loss IMO.

That not going to happen, he has bad back and can not carry the weight, or take the pounding to be an effective linemen anymore. I have a strange feeling that he just camp flodder for KC.
