I always thought Eric Dickerson looked like a damn bad ass Robot in his uni. He was the first one I can remember wearing that face mask, he had the neck pad and just looked so sleek in the Rams uni. Who else looks/looked badass?

He did look pretty damn cool, with the neck roll, large mouth piece. I even had a pair of the Rec-Specs he was wearing (uncomfortable!! and they fogged up when you got sweaty) What was even cooler was watching him run, you could actually see him "switch" gears. Gaston Green had a similar look (without as much talent) Herschel Walker was somebody I thought looked pretty intimidating for a RB, Alonzo Highsmith.

The late Eric Show was the hurler of the infamous pitch to the face. The funny thing is the pitch wasn't very far inside, the Hawk just leaned his face over the plate so far, the pitch got away, and then...yipes!!! Blam-O.
Andre Dawson is the player that made me like baseball. WGN made Cubs fans far and wide. I can't remember the details, but Dawson and another Cub (I think it was Jody Davis) hit back to back home runs I jumped up smashed my hand on my parents bedroom ceiling which is very low and had some funky sharp texture to it and I still have a scar from it.

Hawk did dive into the plate, but he had history with Show. Also, Show was just unpopular throughout the league, including his own lockerroom. He was lucky Sutcliffe didn't get to him.

I wasn't aware of Show's history with Dawson...I knew it occurred during Dawson's huge '87 MVP campaign. I also wasn't aware of Show's unpopularity throughout the league, or in the clubhouse. (Can you shed some light on that?) Then again I was 11.

Technically, Greg Maddux should have been going for career win No. 301 on Sunday.
The Cubs were leading 5-2 heading into the fourth inning of a game on July 7, 1987. San Diego pitcher Eric Show hit Andre Dawson in the face with a pitch, setting off a major brawl. The Cubs slugger had homered twice the day before, then earlier off Show.
Maddux, then a 21-year-old rookie trying to find his way, knew what had to be done — despite an edict from management that he would be sent down if he didn’t win that day.
It didn’t matter that Maddux needed three more outs to qualify for the win, nor that he had only one once in his previous six starts.
“They were going into the top of the fifth inning needing three more outs to get the win,” said manager Larry Bowa, the skipper of the Padres at that time. “Here was a kid who wasn’t very successful wins and losses, and he stuck up a teammate. That showed something.”
Here’s Rick Sutcliffe’s take on the incident in the book, “Banks to Sandberg to Grace: Five Decades of Love and Frustration with the Chicago Cubs.”
“Maddux was pitching that day, and they told Maddux before the game that if he didn’t win, he was going to get sent back to the minors,” Sutcliffe said. “It was the bottom of the fourth when that happened, and I told Maddux, ‘You need three outs to get the win. You get those three outs.’”
Maddux’s response was, “No, I’m going to hit the first guy.”
Sutcliffe said, “No, you do that and you’re going to have to deal with me.”
“I argued with him,” Sutcliffe said. “He went out there and he smoked Benito Santiago; he hit him as hard as a man can. They kicked him out, and they sent him to the minors. That tells you what that kid was made of. When he came back up, Dawson and Sandberg made sure they never took a day off when he pitched.”

Cool. I never knew that about Maddux. That's a great story.
Show was really into the John Birch Society and very vocal about the group's viewpoints. This rubbed a lot of people wrong and made him a pretty unpopular figure around the league.

Wow. That would explain the dislike. All I knew at the time was that Tony Gwynn kicked ass, Benito Santiago was lazy...John Kruk was surprisingly fast down the line to first base...Carmelo Martinez was fat, and that the Madres sucked.
