Good God, would this qualify as a threat? If so, this guy should be arrested. Id imagine that the only reason he apologized is because of the crap he knew he was in after saying that. And I can't stand Schumer but i would be extremely pissed about it if I were him.

Official Apologizes For Saying Bush Should Be Shot Between Eyes

NEW YORK -- State Comptroller Alan Hevesi publicly apologized Thursday for a "beyond dumb" remark about a fellow Democrat putting "a bullet between the president's eyes."

Hevesi called a mea culpa press conference hours after putting his foot in his mouth at the Queens College commencement.

"I apologize to the president of the United States" and to the fellow state politician, Sen. Charles Schumer, Hevesi said. "I am not a person of violence.

"I am apologizing as abjectly as I can. There is no excuse for it. It was beyond dumb."

At the news conference, a contrite Hevesi repeated what he recalled saying in the speech. The comptroller said he was merely trying to convey that Schumer has strength and courage to stand up to the president on major policy issues.

According to a videotape of the speech, Hevesi said:

"The man who, how do I phrase this diplomatically, who will put a bullet between the president's eyes if he could get away with it. The toughest senator, the best representative. A great, great member of the Congress of the United States."

Hevesi said he hadn't been in touch with the White House but he hoped his apology reached President Bush.

Hevesi, a longtime professor of government and politics at Queens College before becoming comptroller, also referred to his comments as "remarkably stupid" and "incredibly moronic."

"I do speak extemporaneously," he said. "And I've never said anything like this."

Schumer spokeswoman Risa Heller said the senator was satisfied with Hevesi's apology.

"Comptroller Hevesi was trying to make a point," Heller said. "He went way too far, and it was inappropriate and wrong. He has apologized to both the senator and the president, and we believe that ends the matter."

A White House spokesman did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment Thursday. But at least one Republican seized on Hevesi's words.

"Threats against the president are no joke, and this incident raises real concerns about Alan Hevesi's fitness to hold public office," GOP Comptroller nominee J. Christopher Callaghan said during his acceptance speech at the Republican state convention in Hempstead, N.Y.

Yep - that's not something you joke around about. (Unless you're a right-winger talking about JFK or RFK, that is. Then it seems to be OK.)

Pretty dumb.

By apples and oranges the thrust lies with "rhetoric" and "open discussion based on trends, real data, and well thought out answers to tough questions". Rhetoric is what it is, pretty much useless chatter designed to confuse, dismay and insinuate. True open discussion envokes thought on both sides of the table attempting to come to a well conceived answer to a tough question, all +'s and -'s put on the table. The "other" party slamming JFK and RFK, is pure rhetoric. Not useful. Designed to make one just as bad as the other. Accomplishes absolutely nothing. Does annoy most folks, UNLESS they can recognize the rhetoric. IF the goal is to make one just as bad as the other, I'm sure some folks will buy in. I prefer to continue to believe "both" sides of the fence have quality individuals who, if given the opportunity, will engage in sound , well thought out dialogue , VICE RHETORIC and FINGER POINTING, to solve some of the problems which we are now faced with. Hopefully , both sides of the fence figure it out, and get started sooner than later. The rhetoric and finger pointing is absolutely a waste of energy and time to us all....dman

Well said. Unfortunately with the way that this country is divided, rhetoric is commonplace. Especially in political forums.

I can only imagine what a different tune you'd be singing if it was a Reagan assassination game and the player was supposed to be John Hinckley.

The fact that there is a video game is not evidence that "right wingers" are making fun of JFK...

Didnt Oliver Stone diersct that movie?

Yep. :yep:

I was in 10th grade in the gym at the time and our coach told us Kennedy had been shot. I thought he was trying to pull another fast one on us.

When I got to accounting class the entire student body at Sheffield High School was stone cold silent and they had turned the local radio station on and broadcast it throughout the school. Some students and teachers were crying.

At the time I did not know what to think. I was saddended and not sure what or why it happened.

All of the 'rednecks' in our area celebrated for several days since they all despised the Kennedys.

http://www.worldmagblog.com/blog/archives/020557.html

I was too young to really care much about JFK getting shot. I clearly remember watching RFK get popped a few years later and watching my father cheer the assassin and later dad's friends coming over to celebrate the event.
