I would have to say the Twins pulled a pretty good trade with San Francisco a couple of years back.

AJ Pierzinski for

-Francisco Liriano-might be as good as Johan Santana

-Boof Bonser-one of the best young pitchers in baseball

-Joe Nathan-arguably the best closer in baseball

Not bad eh? Too bad the Twins can't hit anything.

I'm not saying this is the best all-time trade but probably for the Twins it is.

What do you think is the best all-time MLB trade?

I think we need to qualify great here. All the trades listed so far were great for one team but terrible for another.

At the time, the Doyle Alexander-For some prospects trade was pretty favorable for the Tigers. Jon Smotlz HOF career turned the tables on that one in the long run though.

The AJ...for...Nathan, Liriano, Bonsor trade makes me sick to my stomach as a G's fan. Aj was a complete piece of **** with SF. He was hated in the locker room, led the NL in double plays, and cost $5M. Just a complete disaster.

Had Sabean not made that deal the G's would have a rotation of Schmidt, Lowry, Liriano, Cain, Wright. And Nathan would be closing. Thus the $50M invested in Benitez/Matt Morris could have been spent on position players.

However, Sabean did strike one of the better deals of this era by getting a bona fide ace in Jason Schmidt along with John VanderWal from Pittsburgh for Ryan Vogelsong and Armondo Rios...two losers who never amounted to anything.

Included with Sosa was a box of syringes, which pretty much made it the best trade ever.

Who did the Blue Jays send to the A's for Ricky Henderson? They rented him for half a year and won the World Series.

Who did the A's send to the Yankees for Henderson?

Another good 'un would have to be the Richie Sexson trade.

The Brewers got:

Lyle Overbay
Chris Capuano
Junior Spivey
Craig Counsell
Jorge de la Rosa
Chad Moeller

which, through two more trades, was parlayed into:

Chris Capuano
Dave Bush
Zack Jackson (AAA Pitching Prospect, a good one at that)
Gabe Gross
Tomo Ohka
Craig Counsell
Jorge de la Rosa
Chad Moeller

The D'Backs got:

about 15 games of Richie Sexson
Shane Nance

Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson(I believe thats who it was)
Mark McGwire to the Cards was probably pretty lopsided
And if the Rockies would've agreed to send John Tomson to the Expos with Derrick Gibson and another prospect for Pedro, that would've been something.

My Phillies sent Schilling to Arizona for a collection of slop.

I really thought Vicante Padillia was going to become a solid starter, possibly a staff ace. Guy was inconsistent as hell.

Its lost in the sands of time, but the all time worst deal, except Babe Ruth for $100,000, was when the New York Giants traded SP Amos Rusie to the Cincinnatti Reds for a kid named Christy Mathewson in 1900.

Rusie was a great pitcher in his day, but he hadn't pitched in the bigs in two years when that deal was made. Rusie complied an 0-1 record and ERA of 8.59 in three starts for the Reds.

Mathewson went 373-188 for the Giants over 17 seasons, along with a tidy 2.13 ERA. The 373 wins tied him for third place on the all time victory list. He's also third all time with 80 career shutouts. He also pitched four World Series shutouts and had an 0.97 ERA in the post season.

The Phillies traded Larry Bowa to the Cubs for Ivan DeJesus. Making the deal a stinker for the Phils was their decision to throw in a kid second baseman named Ryne Sandberg.

Ass.

Although the Padres did make what turned out to be a brilliant trade when they sent that dickhead Gary Sheffield to Florida for Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman's a stand-up guy, a hall of famer, and stepped in seamlessly as the face of the franchise after Tony Gwynn ate himself into retirement.

There is no other trade that needs to be mentioned than this one...especially when you look at the impact this trade had on the Yankees, the Red sox...and baseball in general.

This one doesn't belong anywhere near the conversation. While the trade looked bad initially...the Madres were able to cut salary, and give the young and promising Josh Barfield a lot of playing time. At the time I hated the deal, and Mirabelli can cram it with walnuts. He was a complete douche in SD. Josh Bard can't catch a knuckle ball, but he's doing a great job calling games, and producing at the plate. He's a better player than mirabelli.
