Folks,
Some of you know, I recently moved to Indiana. I'm a student that plans on going back to Arizona to finish my degree in Aug/Sept. In the meantime, my savings that I came out with is slowly being whittled away. Bills to pay you know. So, I have applied my ass off around Indianapolis. I score high on everything office related says the temp agency I used, I dress well for interviews, I'm prompt and have a good job history. I'm an economics major, that has thrived in sales the past three years.
Long story short.
I can't find work! What are some ideas for short term employment that don't have me working at McDonalds? I'm afraid I wouldn't make a very good stripper either.

The restaurant industry. Be a server at Outback, Olive Garden, or something like that. Waiters, with tips, make between 12 and 16 bucks an hour and usually have flexible schedules. And the fact that you're already in sales is a major bonus.

When I was in college, I was a psychiatric technician at the State Mental Hospital. I made just short of $10/hour, which would equate to about $12 today. And I loved that job - especially working with the kids. Every state mental hospital has them, and it doesn't really require training (They put me through a four week course before they would let me on the wards).

I side with the construction suggestion....I have a "helper" that just graduated from high school right now that I thought was dumber than a sack of rocks when it came to being physical in a job because it's obvioius he hasn't.. but he's coming around now and I respect him...he makes a lot more than a McDonalds employee...bottom line. If you are overweight, you will be trimmer next fall...If you are underweight you will be stronger... if you work hard you will make decent money and can always look back at the memories after you have a cushy job and make more money than all of us. (just don't get to be such a fat cat that you die at the age of 40) :)
When I was younger I always had a truck because you can always make money with a truck. One of the things I would do is place an add in the local weekly paper (usually not very expensive) To clean out basements and attics, it pays well you make your own hours and many times people throw out treasures. Often I would make much more money having a yard sale with the stuff people paid me to haul away than what I charged them to get rid of the stuff in the first place. There are literally hundreds of ways to be a small entrepreneur

lol...had a couple guys that worked for me on a crew back in the early 80's...they were terrible drywallers but they couldn't show up a certain day of the week because they went to the plasma center.....I love telling that story to lady friends and letting them know where their mascara and rouge comes from.

The "two guys and a truck" idea. Many times, older women pack away just absurd stuff like stacking Mayonaise and Mustard jars by the hundreds and their basements are totally packed when they pass away and after heirs get thru picking thu things there can be a ton of stuff left. The cool thing about that is you let business come to you. People moving throw stuff away like crazy too.

I'd suggest the restaurant bar biz myself. That's how I paid the bills back in the day.
You might try sending Mediator12 a pm and ask him for some contacts or ideas since he lives there or near there.
I think NaptownChief lives there also. He's a chump fan but a decent one at that. I think he's a stock broker? He might have some connections for you.
While were on the networking thread if anyone in Denver is willing to do some manual labor work I have a friend who is hiring tree trimmers/landscapers. $12-20 bucks an hr based on experience. He's had an ad in the paper for a couple weeks and NOBODY is calling him that is legal (save the immigration debate for the politcal forum but I thought I'd slip that in). He's a real good dude and there is plenty of upside with the job.

Remember when Bart ran away wound up on the wrong side of the tracks and donated blood for a cookie, passed out on the curb and his dog ate the cookie?

if you have been in sales you might try a car lot. They are always looking for salesman and the pay is great if you can sell!

I won't go into the political part of it, but I think it speaks world for the state of teenagers today.....they are way too soft (as a whole) for manual labor IMO. Not saying working hard makes you a better man, just saying you shouldn't want to be afraid of working hard.

Anything you do that's legit and puts cash into your pocket and food on the table is honorable...even if it means McD's or delivering newspapers. I wish you all the best as I know it's rough out there.

Ahh, tree trimming. My dad's been doing it for almost 40 years.... still does.. no bucket truck for him, though. He's a climber. You can make some damn good money in this area, even as a helper.

believe it or not Josh, I have turned down those offers to my bosses just because of the different responsibilities that come with it.....once I had a cushy job and had a 100 man crew dropped in my lap....you have to become a different person that I was able to become and it was an asshole job...If I didn't become one, I was taken advantage of.....I didn't like that personality and now I have just become a "drone" that has enough skills that if I don't care for the hive, I'll find another hive that I care for. I like working with my hands to see the fruits of my labor and take pride in my work. It's not for everybody, but if nobody wanted to do it we'd all be living in a cave and cooled by a slave with a fig leaf....hmmm

No, and that's my point. I will do it if i have to, no work is beneath me - however, i also know that i like my wages, and i work hard - it's just mental. I run mainframes for my job - mental challenge is what is my driving factor.... Though i have through about becoming a welder as of late.

I like the challenges of the job also, just not the crap....there was once a cartoon many years ago where the boss said "congratulations (name), we like how you take responsibility and now we are going to blame something on you"..heh
Btw, I have a scalpel and have thought about becoming a brain surgeon but living in Chief country I am having trouble finding any worthy donors...hope you achieve your dream of welding...it's an art..
Edit...the cartoon was Frank and Ernest

I used to wipe asses for 6$ an hour... ER tech during summer, weekends, and hollidays as an undergraduate. Did that for 2 years. Then I became a sleep study technician at 15/hr... watched people sleep all night after I hooked them up to the most awkward equipment (which took about 45 minutes / person to hook up).

I worked at a famous motorcycle company and did QA work to make sure the bar codes were the right format. I got paid for 8hrs work, but did 2hrs work.
