The history of the abortion pill
The ethical storm over abortions has been renewed as it emerged that terminations are being carried out for minor, treatable birth defects.

Late terminations have been performed in recent years because the babies had club feet, official figures show.

Babies are being aborted with only minor defects.
Other babies were destroyed because they had webbed fingers or extra digits.
Such defects can often be corrected with a simple operation or physiotherapy.

The revelation sparked fears that abortion is increasingly being used to satisfy couples' desire for the 'perfect' baby.

A leading doctor said people were right to be 'totally shocked' that abortions were being carried out for such conditions.

Campaigners warned we are turning into a society that can no longer tolerate imperfection. Doctors were recently told they can now screen IVF embryos to try to weed out inherited cancers.

Ethical groups fear parents are opting for abortions because they are not told of the support and help available if they continued with the pregnancy.

Details of the terminations emerged as new figures revealed an alarming rise in the use of an abortion pill that has been linked to 10 deaths.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that between 1996 and 2004, 20 babies were aborted after 20 weeks because they had a club foot.

It is one of the most common birth defects in Britain, affecting one in 1,000 babies each year. That means around 600 to 700 babies are born annually in the UK with the problem, which causes the feet to point downwards and in severe cases can cause a limp.

However it can be corrected without surgery using splints, plaster casts and boots. Naomi Davis, a leading paediatrician at Manchester Children's Hospital who specialists in correcting club feet, said: 'I think it is reasonable to be totally shocked that abortion is being offered for this.

'It is entirely treatable. I can only think it is lack of information.'

Figures also show that four babies were aborted since 1996 because they were found to have webbed fingers or extra digits, which can be sorted out with simply surgery.

Remarkable pictures recently have revealed how at just 23 weeks baby in the womb appears to smile, yawn and flinch in pain.

In 2004 it emerged a baby was aborted at 28 weeks after scans showed it had a cleft palate. Curate Joanna Jepson tried to ensure criminal charges were brought against the two doctors involved but the authorities last year decided against prosecution.

She however vowed to continue in her fight to make terminations illegal after 24 weeks and to ensure cleft palates were not included within the term 'serious handicap' and used to justify late abortions.

Ms Jepson reacted angrily to news of the club foot abortions.

'The law was not designed for this,' she said. 'Actions like these are fostering a disposable attitude to human life and I'm extremely concerned it is going on.

'I am appalled that the medical profession is allowing or even suggesting abortions for these conditions.'

Sue Banton, founder of the group Steps for parents of children with foot disorders, said last year one couple decided to terminate a pregnancy at 25 weeks after discovering their baby would have a section of foot missing.

'We gave them other families to talk to, but they just didn't want to know,' she said. 'It is terrible.

'I know lots of perfectly nice people with this condition and you just can't imagine them not being here.'

Pippa Spriggs from Cambridge, whose son Isaac is celebrating his second birthday in July, was dismayed when as scan showed her baby had a club foot.

'Abortion certainly was not openly advised but it was made clear to me it was available,' she said.

'In fact he has been treated and the condition has now slowed him down at all.'

Julia Millington, of the Alive and Kicking Campaign, said: 'It is all about our perceptions of perfection.

'Increasingly things are moving along the lines where nothing is good enough.

'It seems we can no longer tolerate any imperfection.

'Babies are at the mercy of ultrasound scans and what they may disclose.'

Michaela Aston, from the pro-life group LIFE, said: 'One sympathises for many of the parents of these unborn children aborted after disability has been detected.

'What information are they being given by healthcare professionals so that they can make a truly informed choice?

'We suspect that many parents make the decision to opt for abortion in complete ignorance of the help and support available to children with disabilities and their families.

'For this, health care professionals must shoulder a large part of the blame.

'If, as a society, we are truly committed to equality for people with disabilities then such blatant discrimination against the disabled unborn must stop.'

But Jane Fisher of the charity Antenatal Results and Choices defended the right of parents to terminate pregnancies when defects are found. 'This is not part of a move towards designer babies,' she said.

'These are difficult and painful issues.'

OK, so this article alleges that in the UK, babies are aborted for being imperfect (birth defects)... yet we also know that in China babies are being aborted every day for being imperfect (female).... or for being a couple's (perfectly healthy) second child....

IF this is true, it is murder as far as I'm concerned. I personally was born with a club foot. My uncle being a physician , broke the foot and set it. He did some reconfiguration of the muscles also. Was casted / braced up for a year and a half as a tiny tike. Works great now......for back in the late 50's , my uncle was ahead of his time..dman

Are we on that slope?
could be the beginning of it. with the destruction of the middle class in the u.s., and technology evolving so as to make eugenics easier and more advanced. key things to watch, in my opinion, are the creation/evolution of posthumans and/or the effect of a technological singularity (particularly AI) upon existing humankind.

with greater technology, it is increasingly much more important to examine the ethics of such things. Where as RFID is great on some levels, it's very bad on others. (tracking people like cattle, or sheep :) )

and i always remember this one thing i read or heard: "The ultimate freedom is to not be offended" - and that uniformity - scares the hell out of me. Granted - i'm not always above wanting to be an 'individual' - but i like to see the ugly as well as the pretty.

I do agree with our sentiments though for the context of this discussion mosca.

true enough, ames. on a side note, i feel that people are offended far too easily these days as is, often by the wrong things. and that the things that should truly offend them, the myriad of disgraces against humanity that occur around the world every day, are usually swept under the rug by the masses.

i'm sure that if any of us today were to somehow time travel 50 years into the future, assuming tekmology increases at its current exponential rate, that we would literally be scared ****less. same effect our present would have on someone from say, the early 20th century. so, that being said, i agree with you on wanting to see the ugly as well as the beautiful. everything's everything and all's necessary... but what if the people of the future disagree with that notion and instead choose to mold their own reality in a way we never thought possible? i suppose the battle does come down to ethics for the individual in this day and time. never forget your own ethics and do your damndest to instill some distinction between what's truly right and wrong in your children.

Good post.

I do agree on technology, and this merging of science and religion in quantam mechanics is nice. I heard that they think we are a universe floating in a universe. It's so funny, because the 'ancients' had most of these concepts down, they just used different tech to see it....

As a person born with a birth defect your other posts pissed me off. I glad that to see that is not your true feelings on the subject.

BTW I don't no any republican who dislikes welfare enough to say that is a good reason to have more abortions. And I know some people who HATE welfare.

I don't know how I feel about abortion as a whole. I can see both reason on both the pro life and pro choice side. But abortions because the baby is "not perfect". To me we should start with the parents who would actually consider that in the first place.

well see thats the crux isnt it , hate Welfare , but allow the disabled or retarded to live , expect the parents to support this screwed up person past the age of 18 , so why not terminate the pond scum , therefore eliminating Welfare , Republicans cant have it both ways , you cant shout how outraged you are , when you are not willing to help support , those that cant support themselfs .........now we are on to single mothers , we force them to have an abortion if they cant support the baby without welfare , they wont have anymore kids ........

If someone is born with a disabilty that prevents them from working, I'll help that person for life. If someone who is perfectly healthy hits hard times, I'll help them out to. But I aslo believe in the old saying "if you give someone some fish you can feed them for a day, but if you teach them to fish you feed them for life".

I don't hate welfare, and for short amounts of time I have no problem with it. But I don't think we should tell people don't vote for Republicans they are evil they want to take welfare from them. That attitude which alot of elected Dems take encourages people to become dependant on the Government. It is not good for a person's self esteme to just live on the good graces of others.

I think alot of welfare funds should be used to help people get better a better education so they can find a better job. I'm for helping someone get over a rough patch, but I also want to help them move up in the world and not just be dependent on the government.

You shouldn't say I can comprhend what I read when you write something like this.

"maybe I shouldnt you flip out when the truth is brought up ."

I think I know what your saying, but it really is a f.cked up. I know my grammer and spelling skills suck so I don't have much room to talk. I will admit that straight up. But come on what the f.ck does that mean.:)

I'm not trying to be a prick on this. As I said my grammer and spelling suck, but how and you call me out on not being able to understand what I read when your write something like that. How is anyone suppose to understand that.

As for your link, I don't understand what that has to do with school lunches?

so did Reagan want ot ban ketchup or not ?

My answer is, who cares? If they ban ketcup tomorrow from free school lunches or all school lunches period it won't keep them from getting a healthy meal. Do I care if the government pays for poor families school lunches, no I don't. Do I care if they get ketcup or not? No I don't. I don't think it would save that much money and banning it won't keep kids from getting a hot healthy meal so it makes no difference to me. But they way you put did make it seem like that was the key to good lunch and kids would go hungry without it.

No it is not clear. You typed "maybe I shouldnt you flip out when the truth is brought up ."

If you would have typed "maybe you shouldn't flip out when the truth is brought up." I could have understand what the f.ck your talking about.

I did know, to tell the truth, I just wanted to bust your balls a little.:wiggle:

As for your link, when I first clicked on it it was a different story. I will read it later and get back to you. If I don't get back to you for a while, I'm not ducking it. I am having some problems with the heart defect I was born with and it makes me tired as hell. I am most likey going in for another open heart operation to repair the problem, so I might be off line for a long time. Ask South Stands Junkie. I have talked about it on his board. I'm not telling you fib, just to duck a point. But I don't feel like reading a serious story like the one you linked tonight.

so why not terminate the pond scum , therefore eliminating Welfare , Republicans cant have it both ways , you cant shout how outraged you are , when you are not willing to help support , those that cant support themselfs .........
there is definitely a difference between people born disabled, with mental or physical handicaps who cannot support themselves, and people who suffer from none of the above. often the latter are more than able to support themselves if they chose to work, but simply will not. the disabled do not always have that easy option, the option to go get work.

i do agree with you that overly excessive corporate welfare is something that should be just as much of a concern as that of individual welfare.
