What are some things that you can live without (or spend less on) but don't? In other words...
you "splurge" on. Some of mine are fresh flowers, gourmet coffee, Bath & Body Works ~ especially "Fresh Vanilla and Magnolia" , Victoria's Secret stuff, books and BRONCO trips ;D
Although...now that I've gone on a few....Bronco trips are now a lifetime necessity!
(for good mental health, of course! Ha!)
Oh yeah...I might have to add scrapbooking/craft stuff into that category! LOL!
...and of my new favorite indulgences "Music By Hogan" with a good glass of wine and candlelight. ;D

I got trees and Wren houses and I swear, those birds sing like nothing on the planet. You have to make the opening tiny. They are super happy here and enjoy teasing the next door dogs and Beezlebub, who is a poor hunter anway, too lazy. They flitter around with no fear and you can sit and they will sing for you.

Fast cars. Performance sedans. My wife has always hated the amount of money I'll pay for a premium, top-notch sedan, but it's just too bad for her. I can't live in a life that is absent a performance sedan.

Books Books and more Books. When I was a kid we lived close to a Library and I went there all the time. But now I just buy them. The paperbacks get passed on through several people so that makes it slightly less guilt inducing.
I like going through junk stores, err... antique emporiums, and browsing through the book sections. I've found first editions - by Truman Capote, Grant Lewi, Pearl S. Buck and one of my current favs, Michael Connelly. It is fun to pay very little for what I consider a found treasure. I can pass on any type of shopping but a bookstore.

A few:
Great tools. I am not very handy, but I am sort of obsessed with having cool tools. I don't know how to really use a lot of them. But I will learn someday. Oh yes, I will learn.
Gadgets. I like gadgets. I can spend all day in a Best Buy.
Books. I can't read a book from the library, or that someone offers to lend me. I will only read books that I own. I like to go and browse my book shelves, reminiscing about the books I have read. It drives my wife crazy, but I only read one, maybe two books a month. So it isn't like it's that big of a deal.
Sports Memorabilia. I only buy stuff that has some sort of personal meaning to me. I love looking at it. I work from home, and I love having it around me all day as I work. It's totally unnecessary, but it brings me joy.

Amen! I picked up a signed first of "The Postman" (which was very badly hacked for that bad Costner film) for $6.00. When the guy selling it to me realized it was signed I could tell that he really didn't want to let it go. Fortunately, his parents taught him a thing or two about honor.
I'm seriously considering opening a used bookstore here in Broomfield. We're in serious need of a good one around here.

Read the book, you'll understand. After the first five minutes or so, the only thing the movie had in common with the book was a few of the character names. Couple that with a typically mediocre performance by Costner...

Oh yeah I forgot about internet shopping. So yes now the internet.
I try not to go to the mall very often, and this includes the outlet mall to, I spend wayyy to much money. :spit: What sucks is the malls here sucks compaired to Des Moines, a phrase I thought I'd never say, but yes I just said it. Everything is so picked over, or the worst you walk into a resturant and the gal sitting right across from you is wearing the same top you are wearing. My favorite is plumeria, followed closely by sweet pea. I haven't been in there in awhile and seems like every time I do, they've gotten rid of something I really like! I have a feeling Plumeria is on the chopping block. Sounds like they have some new ones. I haven't heard of the cherry blossom one.

Bath and Body Works has some kind of Jedi Mind Control going on with the females. My wife is drawn there a few times a month. It's like watching the animals flock to the water in the Serengeti.... women sprinting through the mall to get to that place.

Lately I have been drinking a lot of Coke floats. One nearly every night. Last night I had a rum and Coke float. 6 months ago I could see my abs without flexing. The 6pack looked great. I haven't been eating right, or working out over the past 6 months. Now I have to flex just to see the top 2 abs. I'm about 10 lbs over my normal weight, so I'm starting my workouts tomorrow. So I'm going to knock out a few Coke floats today. And go get some Golden Bird, and maybe some Fatburger. I'm loading up on the calories today. Tomorrow it's back to egg whites, a lot of milk, and very lean meats.

I think Meck, modest as he is, pretty much has us all beat. But i have no clue what he does for a living so maybe all that work and money he put into OF1 hardly created a dent in his lifestyle.
me,
i drive a '92 3000GT VR4 and refuse to modify it.
i live in a brand new condo 2 blocks from the beach and i haven't made one significant upgrade to anything, nor have i bought any new electronics, games, movies, phones since i've moved in.
i have directv with all the basic directv channels, nothing more.
dsl internet, but its cheap.
here is what i DO have a problem with, though....
Sporting events! The trip to Denver last year for the Pats game set me way back. Being from Milwaukee, i've gone to every game the Brewers have played out here on the west coast. I went to almost all of the NCAA tourny games here in San Diego. And i fly back home quite frequently. I also like eating great food, and go through alot of gas. Yeah, i splurge on gas... the premium stuff too. take that all you liberals.
and i waste an incredible amount of time on the Orangemane, Brewerfan.net (www.brewerfan.net)(which is a great baseball site, very comprehensive especially during draft time), and playing Madden and MLB 2K6 online.

Sort of because we are used to it but people in this country realy dont get how easy we have it here. The USA all in all are the most spoiled people in the entire world. The more tech. delivers us the lazier we get. What most of us see as vital items for daily life alot of the world doesnt even know it exists. I think we should all be thankfull of all we have. You know I've never had a manicure or pedicure and I think I am in dire need of the latter. However, I'm terrified to have one. I don't think I could handle it. Someone told me they put their fingers between your toes and I would be through the roof in a millisecond if that were the case. I'd love to have one, damnit!

My son's newfound interest in baseball has become my latest indulgence. He told me last week that he wants to learn to play the game, the next day I got him 3 baseballs, a bat and a glove. We've been playing catch and hitting it around at the schoolyard everyday after dinner, and tonight we're off to the batting cages. He's enjoying himself, he's learning something and getting some exercise. I'm bonding with my son & enjoying watching him develop a love for The National Pastime.

The lady that owns the Tattered Cover bookstore Denver's biggest independent store just pulled up roots from Cherry Creek and moved to East Colfax. I had that problem most of my life, but one day I decided to start thinning them out - keeping just the ones I was pretty sure I wanted to read again someday. I was surprised - I thinned out 20%. Plus, get a library card. I hadn't had one in years, but the new libraries are very different. You can reserve titles online, then pop in and grab them in a jif ... you save $6 - $25 per book, you save room and assure quality on your own shelves, and you can always buy it if it meets your criteria.
I read Shanahan's 1999 biography from Seattle PL, and I'm starting "Rogue State" this week - but I wouldn't have bought either.
I INDULGE IN: Expensive coffee - always, expensive beer - almost alway, and I NEVER by lunch meat or processed cheese ... I always buy meat and cheese cut to order in the store deli. You'd be surprised how inexpensive it is ... retail Oscar Mayer lunch meat is about the same price as what's on sale at the deli .... between $3 and $5 a pound. Turkey, ham, pastrami, roast beef.

Really? What makes you think that? Try browsing the books at Amazon. If you don't have a specific author or title in mind it's hopeless. Now, I have used the "people who bought this also bought" feature to lead me on to other stuff based on a book or CD that I like, but I love to just browse. When I browse, I usually buy as well. I know! That's what I said.
If you want a SPECIFIC book, or a faily NEW book, amazon.com is the place.
At used bookstores, it's a fool's errand to search for a specific book ... although there's a used store called "Half-Price Books" that sell used books for (surprise!) half of the cover price ... and they are catalogued so you can sometimes find what you want.
Problem is, the book you want better be 2 years old - minimum - or forget it. Plus, 1/2 the cover price isn't all that great. amazon.com routinely sells at 20% off the cover price - and best of all - they link you up with used copies from warehouse booksellers across the country. That's the way to go, really .... the "Used" section in amazon. You can get practically BRAND NEW books, CDs and DVDs there.

All you have to do is let them know what you're looking for and (if they don't have it stashed in the back room) they'll give you a call. The place I used to browse in Oregon only asked $4.00-$6.00 for very good (near new in most cases) used books. I could easily afford to browse and buy three or four books almost every time I went in. At those prices I could also try new authors without having to worry about how much I was spending.

Really?
Well then ... if I went to your bookstore now, I'd want "Conservatives Without Conscience" by John Dean, "Rogue State" by William Blum, "The World Is Flat" by Thomas Friedman, "Spanking the Donkey" by Matt Taibbi, and "The One Percent Doctrine" by Suskind.
Good luck. I read a lot of Sci-Fi/Fantasy and usually don't have trouble finding what I'm after. The books you listed sound like special interest books and are harde to find even at new book stores. Couple that with the fact that most used book stores focus on fiction and common interest non-fiction and I understand why you have trouble finding the titles you want. Personally, even when I can't find the specific book I'm looking for, I never leave a good used book store empty handed or dissapointed. ;D
Get to know your proprietor and he'll start keeping an eye out for the specific titles you want.

The lady that owns the Tattered Cover bookstore Denver's biggest independent store just pulled up roots from Cherry Creek and moved to East Colfax. Yes that's right east colfax. http://www.tatteredcover.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp All the cherry creek yuppies don't even know what to do with themselves anymore. I went to the new location the other day and it was packed shoulder to shoulder with people Ben. If you haven't been to her store you should check it out.
I enjoy sitting on an old couch, drinking a cup of Joe, and thumbing thru a book before a purchase. Much more enjoyable than going to amazon.com.
If there is anything I can do to help you with your new venture Ben let me know. God Speed! You can do it!
There's a "Tattered Cover" in Highlands Ranch, too ... in the Home Depot complex.

Feeding one of my indulgences (books via opening a used book store) will help me feed another indulgence, sports.
Sweet.
I'd love to own a book store but lack the faith to assume the average American has the attention span or intelligence to stay open for long...

An avarage across a full cross section of Americans would probably not yield good results. That's why I'm gonna open in a suburb. Incomes are higher as are education levels.

I really want to read that, and get others to read it as well.

Actuallly, gas IS an indulgence for me.
I feel guilty for the amount I pour in my boat...but then I listen to the engine and forget everything. One of the best sounds in the world.
