Better check the rearview mirror, Jake Plummer.
A bright orange Broncos bandwagon driven by rookie phenom Jay Cutler is on your bumper. And he's blaring the horn.
It's enough to make a football player snap. Get so mad he feels like kicking or screaming.
And wonder if his time as Denver's starting quarterback is shorter than anybody dares to think.
Plummer, without an ounce of artifice in his body, is easy to like.
But it ain't easy being Jake.
For three years, Broncomaniacs have been on Plummer's tail. When are you going to shave that shaggy beard? Who called off your wedding in Hawaii? How come you can't be more like John Elway? Why can hecklers make you flip out? And where on Earth did you learn to drive like a maniac?
It's enough to cause a guy to run away to Idaho and live in a shack.
Sick of it all, after an allegation of road rage made headlines this week in Denver, Plummer said: "Image tarnished, whatever. Role model, blah, blah - I'm here to play football."
At age 31, old enough to know better, Plummer obviously does not get it.
No quarterback of the Broncos can pick his nose, much less pick a fight in rush-hour traffic, without kicking up a brown cloud of gossip in this dusty old cow town.
His first week on the job in Denver, Cutler understood his responsibilities don't end when he leaves the stadium to grab dinner and a movie.
"Everyone's watching, no matter where you go," Cutler said. "And you always have to be on your toes."
Kind of makes you wonder which quarterback is the NFL rookie and what he can teach a veteran entering his 10th season in the league, doesn't it?
What Cutler is going to teach Plummer is how to grab a seat on the Denver bench.
Let the quarterback controversy begin.
Better pick a side in this debate, Broncos Nation. And better not wait.
If this rookie quarterback from Vanderbilt is as good as coach Mike Shanahan thinks Cutler is, there's no reason he cannot play early for Denver.
Doubt it?
There is a far greater possibility Cutler will play a meaningful role for the Broncos this season than the chances of Plummer retaining the job as starting quarterback in 2007.
Asked Thursday how long it will take for Cutler to become effective in the NFL, Shanahan replied that if you put pressure on a quarterback to win offensive shootouts with his arm, the timetable is two or three years.
But, Shanahan emphasized, if your team owns a great defense and a strong running game, you would be surprised how early a young quarterback can win in this league.
A Denver team whose current strengths are ball control and a stingy defense that often allows a quarterback to play with a lead on the scoreboard while minimizing his risks is ideally designed for Cutler to thrive while learning on the job.
The defensively stout, strong-running Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl with Ben Roethlisberger, who never would have been a championship quarterback in his second season if he had not gained so much experience as a rookie.
Truth be known, Plummer is my kind of people. Any millionaire who drives a Honda Element earns points for keeping it real. The problem? Plummer is better suited to be a burger- and-fries guy than our town's football icon.
Indignant calls to impeach Plummer as quarterback solely because he lost his temper during a fender-bender are so ridiculous as to be a sublime indictment of infotainment disguised as serious news.
The problem with Plummer is not anger management.
It's game management.
All last season, it was apparent Shanahan put the brakes on Plummer's perpetual adolescence with conservative offensive game plans.
Cutler is the future of the Broncos.
And the future begins now.
Hey, I have been guilty of losing my cool when somebody crowded my bumper and blew the horn.
Haven't we all?
But here's one piece of advice that might drive you crazy, Mr. Plummer. The trouble on your tail is not some middle-aged dude behind the wheel of a Ford truck. It's Cutler. And he's coming fast.
Sometimes, the object in your rearview mirror actually is closer than it appears.

Cutler is 2 years beind Jake in terms of football/playbook knowledge.
Next season he will have a shot at taking over #1, but this season, he better get comfortable on the bench.

That "conservative" game plan led to a 13-3 record, a playoff win and a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio. That writer doesn't get it at all...:loser:

I guess since Cutler hasn't had any incidents yet we can assume he'll handle the scrutiny flawlessly from here on out.
Cutler may end up starting this year, but don't anoit him a saint already and act like he's not going to have some BS of his own that he'll have to deal with at some point.

Jake Plummer was pulled over early tuesday for going 32 in a 35. The dilligent officer pulled his plates from S.M.O.T.S. (see Blues Brothers) and proceded to interrogate the perp. He was obviously intoxicated on expresso and was taken into custody for the common good.

That guy is an idiot. All Shanahan said is that it's an open competition. That's all he ever says, and it's the correct thing to say as well. If Shanahan has a fault, it's that he is brutally honest. He repeats the mantra all the time yet people don't seem to get it. EVERYTHING IS AN OPEN COMPETION. Shanahan of all people isn't going to just hand the #1 to Lelie, nor will he keep Rod Smith at #1 if he slips. Smith is the greatest undrafted player off all time but he will be cut if he can't cut the mustard. And that isn't disrepectfull because I love Rod Smith. I'm just making a point.
I'm not into Jake Bashing at all. He's a damn good QB for us. So he kicked a hubcap, was he packin a gun or knife?
Jake might have a couple screws loose but he's a good guy, period. Also, he has handled the Cutler signing with total class. Kizla is a moron.

I don't think Cutler plays a meaninful snap at all this year even if Denver is losing early in the season and Jake has thrown a few ints. Have him sit and learn the offense for a whole year or possibly two and give him the ball in year 3.

It's funny that somehow Elway is some immortal king of all time. Stories about how the Cherry Creek Cops would tuck him in are now mythical. He would be three sheets to the wind and get an escort from downtown. this isn't rumor, it's true. Cherry Creek cops would be waiting at the county line and escort the Duke to bed after good night on the town. This is true.

Cutler plays in three instances:
1 - At the end of a Bronco's Blowout
2 - Because Plummer got hurt
3 - Because the Broncos are out of the playoffs
If it's anything but 1, as the magic 8 ball would say - "Outlook Not Good."

Kizsla is such a waste of time. I can't remember ever reading something from him that I found insightful. Ever! And I hate his writing style. He takes his main premise and repeats it at least three or four times in the column. In between repeating it, he just thinks of new ways of explaining it. You can get the entire concept by reading the first paragraph or two.
I actually like Jake more and more. A few things, bulleted for your reading convenience:
1) His occasional stupid judgment makes me pull for him more. These aren't things like beating up his girlfriend. They're things like flipping off hecklers, getting pissed off at another driver, defending your girlfriend, etc. In other words, they're things every person on this board is capable of doing, in the right circumstances. Jake Plummer is everyman.
2) He hates losing. Say what you want about his occasional brain freezes on the field, but the one common thread is that they are usually a result of his fierce competitiveness. That doesn't make them excusable, from a football perspective. But it makes them easier to stomach, from a human perspective. It's not like he's just not trying out there, a la Ryan Leaf (or similar).
3) He's got cajones. Standing up to the NFL for what he believes; bouncing back from his sometimes idiotic plays (the left-handed throw, for example); his brash approach to being the underdog - all examples of what seems to be an uncommon fearlessness in his persona.
4) He seems like a pretty genuinely good guy. Take the $100K he was donating to charity when he had the infamous road rage incident. The only reason anyone knows about that is the trouble he got in on the way to donating it. Here are a few exerpts from today's Mike Klis article in the Denver Post, Re: the enigma that is Jake Plummer:
"We don't understand how the confusion over this one story is bigger than how helpful he is to us and the kids we help," Russell (spokesperson for Family Tree) said. "We knew he was going to present a check that night, but we didn't know for how much. When we saw all those zeroes, it just blew us all away. It's one of the largest checks we've ever gotten..."
...When it comes to well-paid athletes and charity, there can be a perception that $100,000 is little more than wadded up bills on the dresser. And Plummer's $6.5 million in salary and bonuses this year make him better compensated than most athletes. But a percentage-by-percentage comparison would be a $1,000 donation from a $65,000-a-year employee.
Throw in the fact that the guy drives a Honda Element (can you think of a less pretentious car), his teammates seem to love him, his classy reaction to the drafting of Cutler, etc. - how can you not like this guy?

Outstanding post Mock.
You're dead on about the Rat having no problem demoting Rod Smith if he can't do it anymore. Rod says as much in every interview he gives. I think the fear of losing his job is one of the driving forces that has made Smith so great. He understands that the NFL is all about competition, and that there is no such thing as paranoia in that league.

Dom mentioned it, and Chiefs fans regale in it...yes Plummer did throw a left handed interception...but off the top of my head his left handed td:int ratio is 3-1. Anyone who records the games can watch and see. I know that he threw at least two left handed td's last season, and I believe one the season before.

Great post, Dom. Jake has long been my favorite athlete going back to his days at ASU, and your post eloquently summarized why I feel that way.
I see him as an overachiever, and it's because he doesn't necessarily have all of the typical measureables that I pull for him so much. That, and I like the gunslinger personality.

It took Elway two years to really be comfortable in our offense. Jake put up big numbers quickly, but took a couple of years to tone it down and be responsible with the offense.
Why would anyone assume that some kid fresh out of college is going to be a factor in the near future?
Like I've been saying... too bad we didn't address our defensive needs, as well. We could win a SB with Jake, and then usher in our (hopeful) franchise QB.

Noone here cuts Jake a free ride, the fact is we all make bad decisions at times, (except for Mock's kittens who make Mother Mary pale)...I might be a little over the top for once there. Anyway, these are humans, not Floyd of Rosendale. When the NFL continues to suck the balls of idiots like Ray Ray, Jamal Lewis, Dookie Davenport and other repeat offenders like the PacMan, it's like get your priorities straight.

Jake is a bit of a loose gun, but I believe he is a genuinely good guy. I think we got quite a few high character guys on draft day. I'm a little wary of Brandon Marshall tho. Cutler seems almost too clean.
I'm not aware of any charges filed anyway. How many people turn themselves in in an incident like that? The guy defies the NFL to represent a war hero and is on his way to donate 100K to his foundation. Jake is a good man but used some poor judgement.

Does this guy know anything? he should not be allowed to write or talk football. ever.
Whether he or anyone likes it or not, Plummer is very succesful here and can win us a championship. If he thinks that Cutler is going to take his job right away, he is sadly mistaken. It's going to take Cutler 2 or three years to learn Shanny's offese. you can say the Steelers and Rothlissburer did it all you want. But lets face it. Shannhans offense, probably the most complex in the league, is a lot harder to learn than Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's is very simple.
seriously, this guy needs to shut up.
