My dad is being flown into germany. He has broken ribs, "minor" bleeding of the brain, and they put him into a medically induced coma. The fact they could move him at all is a sign that while he is not in fantastic shape, he is stable enough to be moved. Thank you board, for your prayers and well wishes. I appreciate it guys, thanks.

Another update.

Broken ribs, collapsed lung, gashes in his forehead and right thigh, small hematoma on his frontal lobe. They dont think its going to be bad enough to cause swelling. He is in germany now. He will be moved to Bethesda on sunday. The man is very, very, very lucky. The truck he was in was torn to shreds, realistically, he should not have survived it. Long road ahead, but as of right now, it could be alot worse.

My dad was flown into Bethesda this past saturday. He had superficial wounds in his forehead and right thigh, has a fractured skull, but nothing that requires surgery. He has a severe concussion, and a hematoma on his frontal lobe. He has cracked ribs, and a bruised lung. He has microfractures in his spine, nothing serious, but its still broken bones. He will be ok. He has a long recovery, but will be ok. I want to thank the entire board for the prayers and support they offered. I appreciate guys. Semper Fi.

They induce coma to let the brain try to heal itself and keep the bleeding inside the skull from becoming a clot. I'm not Dr. Broncenstein, but that's my understanding. His body will be fighting all the same time. You just shut the mind down so it doesn't freak out.

Even I have become disenchanted. I just deleted a long post but this isn't the place or time for that. He won't be "fine" for awhile if ever. If he made it stateside they have alot of experience with this kind of trauma, it's their only cowardly weapon of significance. We just need countermeasures. They can equip tanks with "slappers" or whatever they call them in front.

The most horrible thing now is that they put two in tandem so that when one blow up, when people come to help, another goes off. Cowards.

At any rate, he's made it from Iraq to Germany to the USA and he will be cared for. I don't know the exact level of care, but he won't be the first case.

Subject: Latest update on Jeff...
Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2006 5:16:48 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Hello All,

I'm so sorry for not updating you earlier, but it's been a crazy and exhausting week. I don't know what I would do without my mother-in-law Mela, my son Glenn, daughter-in-law Lee and my good friend Lynda Furness. I could not have done this without all of them and that's the truth. Your emails and phone calls continue to be wonderfully overwhelming and have touched Jeff and I deeply. We are humbled by the outpouring of your concern and prayers.

My in-laws, who are all employed in the medical field and are used to seeing traumatic injuries on a daily basis, kept telling me how great he looked prior to me getting here. "Good" to them = "OH MY GOD!" to me, that's for sure. Actually though, looking back, he looked a lot better than he should have, now that I know pretty much what happened. I do take pictures everyday to keep the boys in the loop and note his progress.

Jeff is doing better and better each day. He was taken off the ventilator on Tuesday but set himself back a bit by inadvertently pulling out the chest tube that same night in his sleep. They had to cut another hole to avoid infection and stitched this one in place. I got to hold his arm and watch -- it was both fascinating and gross. I have to say, if he pulls this one out, he'll definitely be taking meat with it and it won't be pretty. All of the tubes are driving him crazy and those of you who know him and still love him anyway, know that is a very short trip. haha

The swelling is down all over his body and he is half the size he was when I initially saw him. He was able to put his wedding band back on. :) He had 20 stitches in his head that got removed yesterday, a nice chin strap scar, two facial fractures, 11 broken ribs, a 3 fractures in his back.

His long term memory is as sharp as a tack but is having a bit of trouble connecting the dots on his short term memory. Yesterday was a big day -- he finally realized that he is no longer in Iraq but in Bethesda, MD and today he realized that he is not in a "facility that fixes people", but a "hospital". He takes his time when asked about the day and date or current events and it is very strange watching him have to think about his answers instead of them just rolling off his tongue. He is still a bit confused about things, but I am attributing a lot of it due to the fact that he not only really got his bell rung, but he did not get a chance to decompress, his lack of sleep and a combination of all the meds he is taking. He is not sleeping well, averaging only about 10 minutes every 3 hours and is extremely restless at night, which is totally kicking me and his mom's arses! Who knew he was Type A?? haha

He is on a thoracic Novocaine epidural for his chest pain and has to breathe into that ball thingy (yeah yeah -- you know what I mean) and raise three balls for 30 seconds to expand his lungs to avoid pneumonia. He has reached all other milestones needed in order to leave Bethesda, with the exception of that particular one, which is still pretty darn good. You all know him -- he has to do it his way or it's no way. I keep trying to tell him how much easier it is expanding those lungs now while the majority of his chest is anesthetized or pain as he knows it will take on a new level if he waits until after that epidural line gets pulled on Tuesday.

He is aware of Col Majeed's death and seems to be dealing. He talks about it often which is always a good sign and he is so glad the other Marines that were with him are okay. He would much rather be hurt than anyone one of them.

After he is discharged here (I'm anticipating one more week), he will be sent to a VA hospital in Palo Alta, CA for more extensive neurology testing. As of right now, they are telling me to anticipate a stay of approximately 30 days but I'm sure that will change once we get there and they do an assessment of their own.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers -- he has a pretty long and hard journey ahead and it won't be easy. Your good thoughts, well wishes and prayers have gotten us this far on such a small amount of time and I am eternally grateful. He gets a bit frustrated with his progress because he doesn't see how far he's come already, but I am totally optimistic about a complete recovery and that he will be back to his old self in no time.

I'll also be needing those gentle reminders that I asked for in a prior update on how much I missed him and was worried about him, sooner than I thought... lol While he does maintain his sense of humor, he's quite a handful and he's not even out of Bethesda. OY! Not only do we have another leg of our journey left, but I will probably have him home after Palo Alta for at least 60 days. I keep having to tell myself.... him injured - me well... him injured - me well..... him injured - me well... haha He is restless and just tired of laying in bed. It's a waiting game and he's all about instant gratification -- not waiting.

I will continue to keep you all posted if you would like. Email is always best to reach me since he keeps us pretty busy during the day and I can answer them at night when I get back to the Navy Lodge to crash, but phone calls are fine also, since we are now out of the ICU and can have our cells turned on...(rest is personal info about my stepmother)

I spoke with him saturday morning. Oddly enough, he remembered my mom's cell and called her. He sounded remarkably clear, and he did lose focus, he brought himself right out of it. I wanna thank you guys for the prayers and well wishes. As I get updates, I'll let you guys know. Semper Fi.

I have to compliment Big Guy for so consistent in his understanding of this situation. I'm surprised that more people don't get it. An IED is the number one killer in Iraq ahead of RPG. The terrorists are lousy shots and are spending a lot of time killing each other.

I'm happy to hear your father made it.

When you hear about who makes it and who doesn't it's always shocking because it always seems to go against everything that you know to be true. It is like getting first hand experience with God or something. You cannot explain it and the more you talk about it the wierder it sounds.

Reality is so much stranger than fiction.
