Watch John Elway in what would have been a great comback drive when he played for stanford. Then watch the famous kick return, as the announcer goes nuts, then a trombone player get's killed at the end of the game.
I never saw the drive that elway did that game. The only thing people show or talk about is the kick return. so I looked for it on you tube, and found it.
so here it is:

I saw a replay of the entire game. It's been disappointing that I didn't see any stanford game, other than that, ever. But the game was typical of the Duke. He was really the team. And he didn't really get it going till the drive. He hit some and missed some. but come clutch time, he was huge.

The kick return might be the most famous play in college of all time. It was total chaos down to the tuba player. You couldn't draw it up like that if you tried.

They call that timeout with 3 seconds instead of 8 seconds left and we miss out on one of the most legendary finishes of all time.

Stanford still puts an asterick on that game. I'm dead serious. They list the game as a win. I think.

That was my impression as well, why didn't they call a T.O. with 3 seconds left?
Vintage Elway...
Elway should copyright the word 'vintage'...
Somehow it only sounds right with his name.

College kids aren't very bright.

Looked a little more into Elway's career...he never won more than 6 games in his career at Stanford. He had a rocket arm, very mobile, was a diamond on an otherwise horrible team, top-notch academic institution...
Does anyone on our current roster have these similar characteristics? Hmmmmm...

What amazes me about that play, besides the fact that it happened, is that it was allowed to stand. I have no idea what the official "rules" are regarding this type of thing, or if they even exist, but when the referee saw that the band was on the field, the logical thing, seems to me, is to immediately whistle the play dead, get the band off the field, put the time back on the clock, and replay the kickoff. It just seems so illogical to me that they let the play continue, and allowed a potential dangerous situation (for the band members) to play itself out.
But, like I said, I have no idea if there is an official protocol for an incident like that.
What if it had been Cal's band on the field? Would history be different? You can bet that, at least, Stanford would have been even more furious.

I still have Elway's senior games against Ohio State and Oklahoma on tape. Both amazing performances against vastly superior teams.

The best part is that if Elway or any of his teammates they won't even talk about the game, won't even mention it

That was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You see how much of a swagger "The Duke" had in his strut from the huddle to center on that 4th and 17. He snatched the ball from center whipped his head around to focus on the receiver down field hung in the pocket and drilled a bullet under duress. "That is the definition of a bada$$ quaterback"

Elway was pretty awesome. I know we all know that, but I watched some old highlight tapes yesterday and I'm still impressed. He was so tough and manly. It's funny hearing how when the game was close late how all the other teams' players were wetting themselves knowing it was over. That's when you know you're a legend.
